Chapter 5

The knock came again.

Louder this time.

Serena's fingers trembled on the door handle.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

"Don't open it," Lucas said quietly.

She turned to him.

"You don't get to command me."

Lucas didn't argue.

He stepped closer instead.

"Whoever is outside doesn't care about you," he said.

"They care about what they can take."

Another knock.

Then a voice.

"Serena Vale," a man called.

"Open the door. We just want to ask a few questions."

Her stomach dropped.

"How do they know my name?" she whispered.

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"Because they already dug."

The door rattled slightly.

"We know you're inside," the voice continued.

"This won't take long."

Serena backed away.

"I can't do this," she said.

"I didn't sign up for your world."

Lucas watched her carefully.

"You didn't," he agreed.

"But you stepped into it."

The knocking stopped.

Footsteps retreated down the hall.

Silence followed.

Serena sagged against the wall, breathing hard.

"They'll come back," she said.

"Yes," Lucas replied.

"And next time, they won't knock."

She looked at him.

Fear warred with anger.

"So what?" she asked.

"You lock me away?"

"No," he said.

"I protect what's mine."

The possessive edge in his voice made her chest tighten.

"I'm not property," she snapped.

Lucas held her gaze.

"Neither is my child."

Her hand moved to her stomach again.

"You don't even know if I'll keep it," she said.

The words hung heavy.

Lucas went still.

"That's not a threat," she added quickly.

"It's reality."

He stepped closer, voice controlled but sharp.

"You will not use that word lightly."

"You don't get to tell me what words I can use," she shot back.

"I get to tell you this," Lucas said.

"I won't allow you to face this alone."

"I didn't ask you to."

"I know."

That answer unsettled her more than anything else.

Lucas made the call within minutes.

"Prepare the car," he said.

"And clear the penthouse."

Serena shook her head.

"No."

"This isn't a discussion."

She folded her arms.

"I'm not leaving."

Lucas studied her.

"Your brother," he said.

"He is at work, correct?"

Her heart skipped.

"What does that have to do with this?"

"Everything," Lucas replied calmly.

"If you stay here, he becomes collateral."

Her breath hitched.

"That's a threat."

"No," Lucas said.

"That's reality."

She hated that he was right.

The drive was silent.

Serena stared out the tinted window as the city blurred past.

Her neighborhood vanished behind glass and steel.

She felt smaller with every mile.

The car pulled into an underground garage.

Guards straightened immediately.

"Welcome home, sir."

Home.

The word felt wrong.

Lucas guided her inside.

Not touching.

Not letting go either.

The penthouse doors opened.

Space.

Light.

Luxury.

Serena felt like an intruder.

"This isn't real," she murmured.

"It is," Lucas replied.

"And it's secure."

She turned to him.

"I won't be hidden."

"You won't be," he said.

"You'll be protected."

"That's the same thing," she said bitterly.

Lucas's expression softened briefly.

"You think I enjoy this?" he asked.

"I don't."

She didn't answer.

Later, Serena stood by the window, arms wrapped around herself.

The city glittered below.

Unreachable.

Lucas watched her from across the room.

"You're angry," he said.

"You took my choice," she replied.

"I gave you time," he countered.

"You cornered me."

"I saved you," he said.

She turned sharply.

"I didn't ask to be saved."

Lucas stepped closer.

"You're not weak," he said.

"But you're vulnerable."

She laughed bitterly.

"And you think you're the solution?"

"No," he said.

"I think I'm the problem you can't avoid."

Her breath caught.

"Why do you care?" she asked suddenly.

"Really?"

Lucas hesitated.

"Because I don't abandon what's mine," he said finally.

She shook her head.

"That's not care," she said.

"That's possession."

"Sometimes," he replied quietly,

"They look the same."

A knock sounded at the penthouse door.

Hawthorne entered, tense.

"Sir," he said.

"The story is live."

Lucas turned to the screen.

Serena followed.

Her face stared back at her.

Grainy footage from the hotel lobby.

Her soaked hair.

Lucas beside her.

The headline burned.

BILLIONAIRE CEO SPOTTED WITH MYSTERY WOMAN - SECRET ROMANCE?

Serena's chest tightened painfully.

"My brother," she whispered.

"He'll see this."

Lucas grabbed his phone.

"I'll handle it."

She turned on him.

"You can't control everything," she said.

Lucas met her gaze steadily.

"I can control enough."

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Eli.

Eli: Serena... why is your face on the news?

Her hands shook violently.

She looked up at Lucas.

"You've already ruined my life," she said.

Lucas stepped closer.

"No," he said firmly.

"I just became part of it."

Her phone buzzed again.

Another message appeared.

From an unknown number.

Unknown: Congratulations on carrying the Blackwood heir.

Unknown: Let's see how long you last.

Serena's blood ran cold.

She showed Lucas the screen.

His expression darkened instantly.

"This isn't the media," he said.

"What is it?" she asked, voice breaking.

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"A warning," he replied.

"And a declaration of war."

Serena's chest tightened with fear.

"Who would do this?"

Lucas's gaze hardened.

"Someone who knows about the baby," he said.

"And wants it."

Her hand flew to her stomach.

"No," she whispered.

"They can't."

Lucas's voice dropped, dangerous and absolute.

"They won't touch you," he said.

"Over my dead body."

Serena looked at him, realizing the truth too late.

This wasn't just romance.

Or scandal.

She wasn't just pregnant.

She was a target.

And Lucas Blackwood would burn the world to keep what he claimed.
