Chapter 1

The boardroom was too quiet and suffocating.

I stepped into the office and the door closed behind me with a soft click.

I sat in the leather chair they told me to, my hands placed flatly on my laps. I still didn’t get why Cassian’s assistant called me this morning. She just said, “Mr. Vale wants you at the nine o’clock board meeting.” So, I walked in smiling at people whose names I barely remembered. My stomach twisted, but I told myself it was just the pregnancy. Nothing more.

“Before we finish, there’s one last thing to discuss.” Cassian’s voice broke the silence, cold and final. I looked up from the glass of water in my hands, I had been staring at.

Cassian stood at the front of the table, taking charge like he always did. His dark hair was neatly styled. His gray suit fit him perfectly.

“My marriage to Seraphina Hart is ending, effective immediately. Legal steps have been taken. This won’t affect Vale Industries’ operations.”

Silence filled the air, his voice was cold, the glass of water slipped from my hand and hit the table hard. Water splashed across the polished wood socked through my skirt and onto my thighs everyone froze with their eyes glued on me. . My heart kept racing, pounding so loud I am sure everyone could hear it.

I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Then something inside me snapped.

I stood up filling the space between us before I could stop myself, I grabbed his shirt, pulling him toward me. . I could smell his cologne sharp and expensive, the same one that used to make me lean into him when he came home late. Now it made my stomach turn.

“You son of a bitch.”I muttered.

The words came out shaky. The room went dead quiet, Someone’s chair creaked. A pen rolled off the table and hit the floor.

Cassian matched my gaze. He was completely calm. That was the part that hurt the most. He didn’t even look surprised.

“Seraphina…..

“Don’t.” My voice cut in. “Don’t say my name like I’m the one being unreasonable. You just stood there and announced our divorce like it’s a business report. What’s wrong with you?” I posed the question to him.

His jaw tightened, but his voice stayed steady. “Let go of my shirt.”

“Tell me what I did.” I tightened my grip, my nails digging into the fabric. In front of all of them. You tell me exactly what I did to deserve this.”

He exhaled slowly. “You leaked classified defense data to a competitor. Fourteen documented instances. Encrypted communications, server logs, financial transfers — all traced back to you.”

My chest tightened. “I didn’t do that.”

“The evidence…

“I don’t care about your evidence!” The words burst out of me. My hands were shaking so hard I could barely hold on to him. “I am your wife, Cassian. Did you even think for one second that these are made up stories? Did you even ask yourself that before you had your lawyers draw up the papers?”

I posed the question, expecting a response from him right away. But he chose to keep her lips sealed, looking away from me to stare up at the ceiling.

“You didn’t even call me,” I said, my voice came out barely above a whisper. You didn’t look me in the eye and ask if it was true. You just… prepared your little speech and dropped it on me in front of eighteen people like I was nothing.”

“The decision was made based on the facts,” he said. His voice was low and rough . “Not feelings.”

I laughed sarcastically . “Right. Because feelings are inconvenient, aren’t they? I was so stupid. I actually thought there was something real between us. That maybe underneath all that cold treatment you actually cared.”

He stayed silent, his expression unchanged..

I thought about the last three years. The coffee he’d leave on my desk some mornings without a word, just the way I liked it — extra shot, no sugar. The nights he came home late and found me still awake, and instead of walking past, he’d sit with me in the dark kitchen for a few minutes. The two times he’d reached for my hand first in public, his thumb brushing over my knuckles like he forgot to keep his walls up.

I built a whole future on two moments and a cup of coffee.

Stupid. I was so stupid.

“I’m pregnant!!…”the words came out of my mouth before I could stop them.

The words hung in the air. Everyone went still, His fingers tightened on the edge of the table for half a second. His expression was unreadable, but something flickered behind his eyes. Just for a moment.

“We’ll discuss everything privately,” he said. His voice was quieter now. “After the meeting.”

Panic shot through me like electricity, that was all he gave me. No shock. No questions. Just business that’s all he cared about.

Something inside me broke wide open.

I let go of his shirt and stepped back. My legs felt shaky, but I forced myself to walk out of the boardroom. Down the long hallway with its bright lights and the sound of my heels echoing off the floor I walked past a mirror, my reflection staring back at me,pale face, wide eyes, messy hair, trembling hands.

I made it to my car. I slid into the driver’s seat, slammed the door, and sat there with my forehead pressed against the steering wheel. My whole body was trembling. My chest hurt. I could still smell his cologne on my hands.

Then the anger came back, hot and sharp.

He was going to regret this. Every second of humiliation he put me through today. The way he looked at me like I was already guilty. The baby he didn’t even care about.

I wasn’t going to let him have any of it. Not the company, not the baby. Not a single piece of the life we built on his terms.

Cassian Vale was going to suffer and I was going to make sure of it.
