Chapter 26

The penthouse felt unusually silent.

Adrian and Zara had spent the entire night reviewing security footage, cross-checking access logs, and scrutinizing every minor discrepancy in employee behavior.

The traitor had to be someone within their inner circle - someone they both trusted.

Adrian leaned over the monitor, jaw tight. "Look here."

He zoomed in on a timestamp from the restricted server room, showing a shadowed figure entering the room at 3:42 a.m.

Zara squinted. "That badge... it looks like Elena's."

Adrian's gaze flickered sharply. "I thought so too - until we cross-referenced the camera angles."

Zara held her breath. "Then who?"

Adrian clicked rapidly, bringing up access logs. "The badge was cloned. But the login sequence... only one person has that level of operational clearance. Only one person knew about the Zurich transfer."

Her stomach dropped. "Who?"

Adrian's face hardened. "Mark Donnelly."

Zara froze. Mark, the senior executive who had always appeared loyal, meticulous, and unshakable. The man who had been quietly advising Adrian for years.

"Impossible," Zara whispered. "He's always been... dependable."

"Not to Victor," Adrian said quietly. "He's been feeding him information - everything from internal meetings to minor financial moves. And the moment Victor learned about the Zurich transfer, he knew exactly how to destabilize us."

Zara felt a cold chill run down her spine. "How long?"

"Years," Adrian admitted grimly. "Victor didn't just exploit a weakness - he cultivated one."

Confrontation

Adrian didn't waste time. He called a private meeting with Mark under the pretense of a routine executive review.

Zara insisted on being there - not as a witness, but as a shield.

Mark entered, confident as ever, unaware that the net was closing around him.

Adrian's tone was controlled, neutral, but every word cut like a scalpel.

"Mark, we need to discuss access to sensitive company information."

Mark smiled faintly. "Of course. Anything to clarify."

Adrian gestured toward the screen. "This. Care to explain?"

The footage played. Mark entering the server room at 3:42 a.m., clearly aware of security blind spots, clearly confident.

Zara noticed his expression flicker - just barely.

"Security clearance issue?" Adrian asked evenly.

Mark's smile faltered. "I... I was running a test."

"A test?" Adrian's voice dropped a notch. "Alone. In the middle of the night. Accessing confidential documents about the Zurich account."

Mark hesitated. "I-I only wanted to ensure everything was secure. I didn't..."

Adrian stepped closer. "You didn't what? Betray me? Betray this company? Betray your wife's trust?"

Zara's eyes widened. She hadn't called him out, but she couldn't hide her anger. "Mark! How could you?"

Mark's confidence shattered. "I... I had no choice. Victor... he said he'd destroy everything if I didn't cooperate."

Adrian's expression darkened. "Everything?"

"Yes!" Mark admitted, desperation creeping into his voice. "He... he threatened my family!"

Zara's hands clenched. "You endangered mine too!"

Adrian's jaw tightened. "You're done."

He turned to the security team. "Escort him out. Effective immediately. Revise all access codes. Terminate all external links to his accounts. He's no longer part of Vaughn Enterprises."

Mark stammered, "Please... you don't understand..."

Adrian's glare froze him. "I understand perfectly. You're a liability. And you almost cost me everything - my company, my inheritance... my wife."

Zara felt the weight lift slightly, but Adrian's intensity didn't waver.

"This war," he said quietly, turning to her, "just got personal. And anyone who threatens you... anyone... pays the price."

Aftermath

Later, in the penthouse, Zara sank onto the couch, exhausted.

Adrian joined her, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "You okay?"

She nodded, though her heart still raced. "I will be. But... he was inside our walls. Trusted. How do you recover from that?"

Adrian sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her. "By remembering who's loyal. Who stands beside you. And by knowing that Victor may have won battles, but he hasn't won the war."

Her hand found his. "And we're in this together?"

"Together," he said, voice low and determined. "No one touches you without facing me first. Not Victor. Not Mark. No one."

Outside, the city lights blinked, but for the first time that night, Zara felt a small spark of hope.

But somewhere across town, Victor Hale's lips curved into a dangerous smile.

"Interesting," he murmured to himself. "They found the mole. But they don't know what's coming next."
