Chapter 6

The words from Clara's phone seemed to echo through the mansion. "Our CEO needs to approve the Kingsley takeover strategy." Silence followed. Heavy. Unforgiving. Clara slowly lowered the phone. Across the kitchen, Ethan Kingsley stood completely still. His expression had gone dangerously calm-the kind of calm that usually came before a storm. Liam and Isla were still watching television, unaware that the adults in the room had just stepped onto a battlefield. Ethan spoke first. Quietly. "Takeover strategy." Clara didn't answer. He walked closer. Each step was deliberate. "So that's what this is about." Clara's heart was beating so loudly she was sure he could hear it. "Ethan-" "You lied." "I didn't-" "You're working with the company that just attacked my business." Clara clenched her fists. "I'm not working with them." Ethan's eyes hardened. "Then explain the phone call." Before Clara could respond, Liam suddenly looked up. "Mummy?" Clara turned immediately. "Yes, sweetheart?" "Can we watch cartoons instead of boring news?" Clara forced a smile. "Yes." She grabbed the remote and switched the channel quickly. Bright animated characters replaced the tense business broadcast. The twins relaxed again. But the storm between Clara and Ethan only grew stronger. Ethan lowered his voice. "Living room." Clara understood immediately. They could not have this conversation in front of the children. She followed him out of the kitchen. They stopped near the massive glass windows overlooking the ocean. For a moment neither spoke. Finally Ethan turned. "Start talking." Clara folded her arms. "You're assuming too much." Ethan let out a short laugh. "Am I?" He stepped closer. "You receive calls from Hartley Global." "You defend their strategy." "And they're planning a takeover of my company." His gaze sharpened. "And somehow this is coincidence?" Clara's voice dropped. "You don't know the whole story." "Then tell it." Clara looked away toward the ocean. She had spent years building walls around her past. Walls she never intended to break. But now Ethan was standing directly in front of them. "I'm not your enemy," she said quietly. Ethan's expression didn't soften. "That's difficult to believe." Clara turned back to him. "Because you don't trust anyone." Ethan didn't deny it. "Trust is earned." "Then maybe you should stop assuming the worst." His voice hardened again. "You're living under my roof while secretly connected to a company trying to destroy my business." Clara's patience snapped. "Destroy?" She stepped closer. "You built a monopoly in half the tech sector!" Ethan's eyes flashed. "I built an empire." "And every empire creates enemies." The words hung between them. For a long moment neither moved. Then Ethan asked something unexpected. "Are you their CEO?" Clara froze. He had asked the question calmly. But the weight behind it was enormous. Her silence lasted just long enough. Ethan noticed. His jaw tightened. "I see." Clara finally spoke. "It's not what you think." Ethan's voice dropped. "Then what is it?" Clara hesitated. How much could she reveal? How much would destroy everything? "I started the company years ago," she admitted quietly. Ethan's eyes narrowed. "So you are the CEO." Clara exhaled slowly. "Yes." The confession changed the air between them instantly. Ethan stared at her as if seeing her for the first time. "The mysterious leader of Hartley Global..." He shook his head slightly. "...is my wife." Clara forced a small, bitter smile. "Life is funny like that." Ethan stepped back slightly. His mind was racing. Every contract lost. Every strategic attack. Every calculated move from Hartley Global. All of it suddenly connected to the woman standing in his house. "You've been targeting my company for months." Clara didn't answer immediately. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer. "Yes." Ethan's eyes darkened. "Why?" The question came out quieter than she expected. For the first time since the argument began, Clara's confidence faltered. She looked toward the ocean again. "Because of something you did." Ethan frowned. "I don't even know you." Clara laughed softly. "That's exactly the problem." He stared at her. "What does that mean?" Clara turned back slowly. Her eyes held something deeper now. Something painful. "You really don't remember, do you?" Ethan's confusion deepened. "Remember what?" Clara hesitated. For five years she had carried the memory alone. Five years of anger. Five years of survival. And two children who changed everything. Behind them, the twins' laughter echoed from the living room. Ethan glanced toward the sound. Then back at Clara. His voice lowered. "What are you talking about?" Clara met his gaze. Five words left her mouth. Words that would change everything. "Five years ago in Melbourne." Ethan went still. Because suddenly- A faint memory flickered at the edge of his mind. A party. A hotel. A woman. And a night he had never fully remembered. Clara watched his reaction carefully. "You said you don't know me," she whispered. Her voice trembled slightly. "But Ethan..." She gestured toward the living room where Liam and Isla were laughing. "You know them." Ethan's entire body went rigid. The implication hit him like a thunderclap. His voice was barely a whisper. "...What did you just say?" Clara looked directly into his eyes. "The twins," she said softly. "Are yours." The world seemed to stop. Inside the Kingsley mansion, the ocean waves continued crashing against the cliffs. But Ethan Kingsley stood completely frozen. Because the woman he had just accused of destroying his company had revealed something far more dangerous. She had just changed his entire life.
