Chapter 4

The rain soaked through my jacket before I had reached the side entrance of the villa. Cold water ran down my collar and pooled at the small of my back, but I moved without hurrying. Speed drew attention. Purpose didn't.

"Voice recognition active," my phone murmured through the earpiece.

"Disable perimeter alarms," I said against the side of my collar.

"Alarms disabled."

I slipped through the side entrance and descended the concrete stairs to the basement level. The keypad on the reinforced glass door of the server room glowed an angry, uncompromising red.

Access Denied.

Julian had changed the master locks. Probably within hours of watching me walk out. The logic was sound. He thought the architecture lived on the machines behind this door. He thought locking me out of the building meant locking me out of the code.

He had fundamentally misunderstood what he owned.

Through the glass, a harsh blue light spilled across the server room floor in uneven rectangles. Someone was already inside.

I pressed my shoulder to the cold wall and looked through the glass at an angle. Chloe stood at the primary console. She held a silver USB drive in one hand and was forcing it into the mainframe's primary port with the particular violent impatience of someone who has been told a task is simple and is discovering it is not.

"Julian!" Chloe's voice was muffled through the thick glass, but her frustration was completely audible. "Get down here!"

Heavy footsteps pounded down the staircase behind me. I moved without sound, dropping behind the towering HVAC unit just as the distinctive sharp sound of Julian's dress shoes hit the basement floor.

"What is the problem now?" Julian demanded. He pushed through the glass door.

"The system is locking me out," Chloe said. She pointed at the monitor with a manicured finger, the gesture of someone blaming a machine for her own incompetence. "It says unauthorized physical device."

"Move out of the way. Let me type the admin credentials."

"You said I could just plug it in and copy the files!" Her voice pitched higher. "You promised we'd be done before midnight."

Julian leaned over the keyboard. His fingers moved fast. "Clara's encryption is aggressive. Give me a minute."

"She's not even here, Julian." Chloe's voice was dangerously close to a whine. "How is she stopping us?"

"Because she built the architecture!" Julian's composure cracked for just a second, the irritation bleeding through. "Stop whining and hold the flashlight steady."

I pulled my phone from my pocket. My thumb moved to the custom terminal application I had coded three years ago on a night when I suspected this exact scenario might eventually arrive.

"System," I whispered. "Engage remote backdoor. Target: Mainframe power relay."

"Awaiting confirmation," the automated voice replied softly in my ear.

"Cut it."

Inside the glass room, the massive curved monitors snapped off simultaneously. The low, constant hum of the server racks, a sound I had lived inside for ten years, died in an instant. The basement fell into absolute darkness.

"What just happened?" Chloe's voice jumped an octave. "Julian, it's pitch black!"

"I didn't touch anything!"

"The screens just went out! Did you break the terminal?"

"Don't panic. The backup generators should kick in."

"Well, they aren't kicking in!" Her voice was rising toward genuine fear. "My flash drive is still in the port. If this ruins the data, it's your fault."

"Shut up and let me think," Julian growled. "Use your phone light. I need to check the breaker box in the hall."

Footsteps moved toward the glass door. I pressed myself further into the shadow of the HVAC unit. Julian moved past me at close range, his phone throwing an erratic, sweeping beam of light across the concrete walls as he headed down the corridor toward the electrical panel.

I looked at my own screen. The server's main power was dead, but the internal battery backup was keeping the data nodes alive. A narrow window.

"System," I commanded, barely moving my lips. "Route all proprietary backend logic to my encrypted cloud drive."

"Establishing secure connection." A green progress bar appeared. "Transferring."

Ten percent. Twenty.

Inside the glass room, Chloe smacked the side of the dead monitor with the flat of her hand, a petulant, furious sound. "This is ridiculous. You promised me this would be easy, Julian. You said she was just a glorified typist."

"I said I managed the business," Julian called back from down the corridor. I could hear him rattling the metal breaker panel. "The code is stubborn. Just wait."

"I'm pulling the drive out," Chloe announced.

"Don't touch it!" His voice sharpened with genuine alarm. "You'll corrupt the physical sector!"

"It's completely dark in here! I'm taking my drive and going upstairs."

Fifty percent. Sixty.

I watched the progress bar climb and tried to breathe normally. Ten years of labor. Every late night, every holiday weekend, every migraine I had worked through rather than stopping. Every line of foundational code that Julian had put his name on while I sat in this basement. All of it moving into the ether, sealing itself behind a biometric lock that required my thumbprint and my voice and nothing else.

Eighty percent.

Julian's shoes hit the floor again. "The switches are fine. The main line must be severed. I need to call the tech team."

"At two in the morning?" Chloe's heels clicked on the concrete as she stepped out of the server room. "Forget it. I'm going to bed."

"Chloe, wait—"

"Transfer complete," my phone chimed softly.

I closed my eyes for exactly one second.

"System," I whispered. "Execute Protocol Zero."

"Warning. Protocol Zero will permanently erase all local backend files. Confirm?"

"Confirm."

"Wipe initiated. Estimated time: four minutes."

I slipped the phone back into my jacket. Julian chased Chloe up the stairs, their argument fading into the upper levels of the house until I could hear nothing but rain against the basement windows and the distant sound of a door closing on the floor above.

I stepped out from behind the metal unit and stood in the dark.

The server room was dead and silent on the other side of the glass. I didn't need to look at the screens to understand what was happening in the dark. My code was shredding itself into fragments, overwriting each sector three times before releasing it, following the protocol I had written on a quiet Sunday two years ago when I had allowed myself to imagine, just once, what I would do if I ever had to leave.

I walked up the concrete steps and pushed through the side exit. The rain hit my face cold and immediate, cutting through the heat of the basement.

I walked down the long paved driveway toward the wrought-iron gates. In my jacket pocket, my fingers found the heavy brass key, the physical backup for the basement door, the one thing Julian had not thought to ask me to return.

I stopped at the storm drain at the edge of the street. The rushing rainwater swirled black in the grate beneath me.

"Good luck accessing the hardware," I said to the empty street. My voice was very calm.

I opened my fingers. The key dropped, hit the iron bars with a clean metallic ring, and disappeared into the water below.

I turned up my collar and walked to my car.

The neon sign outside room 214 buzzed like an angry hornet. I sat cross-legged on the mattress, my laptop open, the blue light from the screen making the peeling wallpaper look clinical. A terminal window filled the display. Lines of red text scrolled continuously, confirming the total destruction of every file remaining on the Vance AI servers.

My cell phone vibrated violently against the nightstand.

Incoming Call: Unknown Number.

"Clara Vance."

"Ms. Vance. Mercer here." A crisp, controlled voice. "Mr. Thorne wants to confirm our eight AM meeting."

"I'll be there."

"He asked me to inquire about your assets," Mercer continued. "Will you be bringing the proprietary logic?"

I watched the red text scroll. Sector after sector, overwritten and released. "The logic is secure. Tell Thorne he's getting the only copy in existence."

"Excellent. We look forward to it."

The line clicked.

Immediately the phone vibrated again. Julian's name lit up the screen.

I set it face-down on the nightstand and watched the mattress absorb the vibration three more times before it stopped. Then a text appeared on the screen.

Julian: The servers just rebooted but the drives are wiped. What did you do?

I didn't reply.

Another message came through.

Julian: Provide the recovery password immediately. If you destroyed company property, I will have my lawyers file criminal charges by dawn. You will go to prison, Clara.

Then: Julian: Answer me!

I glanced at the laptop. The red text had stopped scrolling.

Wipe Complete. Zero bytes remaining.

I opened Julian's contact profile. I found the notification settings. I pressed the button and watched his name go gray.

Mute notifications.

The phone went dark.

Tomorrow, Silas Thorne would see exactly what kind of weapon I was capable of building. And Julian would wake up to discover that he had spent a decade calling himself the founder of an empire, and that tonight, while he slept in the house that was still technically half mine, that empire had become a beautiful, perfect nothing.
