Chapter 1

"Sync complete. New financial document detected," the automated voice of the mainframe chimed through the cold basement air.

I cracked my knuckles against each other. The pop of each joint echoed off the concrete walls, sharp and deliberate.

"Display it."

The massive curved monitor above the server racks flickered to life with a low electrical hum. A digital receipt materialized across the screen, crisp and merciless.

$15,000. Maison de Rêve, Paris. Custom diamond pendant.

My eyes moved over it once. Then again. The numbers didn't change.

"Read the timestamp," I commanded. My voice was perfectly steady. A surgeon's voice.

"October fourteenth. Eleven forty-two PM," the system replied.

My fingers hovered over the mechanical keyboard without pressing a single key. October fourteenth. The night my husband, Julian Vance, swore he was locked inside the R&D center. Finalizing the new neural network. He had called me at 9 PM, his voice carrying the precise, exhausted cadence of a man deep in code. He had said he didn't even have time to eat.

"He said he didn't even have time to eat," I whispered to the empty room.

The words tasted wrong in my mouth the second they left it. Foreign. Like someone else's memory playing in my head.

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of pouring my blood into circuit boards and logic gates, of building Vance AI from a two-bedroom apartment startup into a global empire. Ten years of believing the story we told the world about ourselves.

I swallowed.

"System, access backend login logs." I kept the instruction methodical. One step at a time. "Cross-reference Julian's primary mobile device with the receipt's timestamp."

"Processing. Authorization required."

I pressed my palm flat against the biometric scanner beside the console. The cold glass read the ridges and valleys of my hand without mercy or sentiment.

"Override granted. Clara Vance, Lead Architect."

Green text scrolled down the black terminal in a clean, vertical waterfall.

"Locate his GPS ping for that exact minute."

"GPS coordinates acquired. Displaying map."

A red pin dropped onto the digital grid. It didn't land on the sprawling campus of our tech park. It didn't land on the R&D center with its reinforced doors and its badge-access hallways.

It landed downtown. Right in the center of the city.

"Identify the address."

"The Obsidian Hotel. Penthouse suite level."

I looked at the glowing red dot. The Obsidian. A luxury high-rise known for its absolute discretion, for champagne on ice and silk-lined corridors where nobody asked questions. Not for servers. Not for energy drinks. Not for a man who claimed he was too busy to eat.

A laugh scraped its way up my throat. It sounded hollow when it reached the air, like a stranger's voice coming from my own chest. I noticed I wasn't crying. I noticed my hands weren't shaking.

I was just standing in the cold light of a screen, watching a red pin tell me the truth my husband hadn't bothered to hide very well.

I just—
