Chapter 5

Nine o'clock on Thursday morning, the fluorescent lights of the family court waiting room buzzed a steady, irritating hum. I sat on the hard wooden bench, staring at the five-page custody evaluation questionnaire resting on my lap.

The heavy double doors at the end of the corridor swung open. Marcus strode into the hall wearing a navy Tom Ford suit. Chloe walked right beside him, wearing a tailored beige trench coat.

Leo and Mia didn't even look at me. They sprinted past my bench, heading straight for my husband's mistress.

"Chloe!" Mia squealed. She threw her arms around the woman's neck. "You actually came."

"Of course I did, sweetie," Chloe purred. She smoothed Mia's blonde hair, shooting a triumphant smirk over the teenager's shoulder directly at me. "I told you I'd be here to support your dad. We're a team."

Leo shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket, nodding at Chloe. "Dad said you cancelled your morning meetings just to be here. Thanks."

"Anything for you guys," Chloe said.

Mia dug into her designer purse—the one Chloe bought her yesterday—and pulled out a folded piece of thick pink cardstock. "I finished this in art class yesterday. I wanted to give it to you before we go inside."

I recognized the glitter glue and the careful cursive lettering. I had purchased those exact art supplies last month. The front of the card faced me for a fraction of a second. Happy Early Mother's Day to the woman who actually gets me.

Chloe gasped, pressing a hand to her chest in mock surprise. "Oh, Mia. This is beautiful. I'm going to put it right on my desk at the office."

My fingers tightened around the edges of the custody questionnaire. Seven years of packing lunches, attending parent-teacher conferences, and staying up late to soothe fevers evaporated into the sterile courthouse air. They didn't want a mother. They wanted a limitless credit card.

I gripped the top of the thick packet. I ripped the document straight down the middle.

The sharp tearing sound cut through the chatter across the hall. I stood up, walked two steps to the stainless steel trash can, and dropped the shredded pieces inside.

David, my attorney, watched the paper fall. He didn't ask questions. He unzipped his leather briefcase and pulled out a single manila folder.

"Are you absolutely sure about this, Clara?" David asked, keeping his voice strictly professional. "Once you sign this, there is no walking it back."

"Hand it over," I said.

He passed me the backup agreement. Three pages. Full relinquishment of physical and legal custody of Leo and Mia, paired with an immediate demand for the liquidation of all joint assets. No visitation schedules. No alimony negotiations. Just a clean, brutal financial severance.

Marcus noticed David handing me the new document. He muttered something to Chloe, detached himself from the teenagers, and marched over to my side of the corridor.

"Whatever you're planning to say in there, tone it down," Marcus ordered. He pointed a stiff finger at my face. "The judge doesn't need to hear your paranoid delusions about Chloe."

"Paranoid delusions," I repeated. I glanced at the pink card still clutched in Chloe's hand across the room.

"She is a crucial part of my executive team," Marcus insisted, adjusting his silk tie. "She's here in a professional capacity to manage my schedule. Keep her name out of your mouth during the hearing. Don't make this messy for the kids."

"You think I'm going to fight you for them," I said.

"I know you are," Marcus scoffed, his posture radiating arrogance. "You've spent the last week trying to ruin my life. But I have the primary income, the house, and the kids want to stay with me. You have nothing."

I laughed. A short, sharp sound that made Marcus flinch.

I turned my back on him and walked over to the small consultation table near the courtroom doors. Marcus's attorney, a balding man named Mr. Gable, stood there reviewing a stack of standard visitation proposals. I slapped my three-page backup agreement right on top of his neat pile.

I pulled a black pen from my purse. I flipped to the final page and signed my name on the custody relinquishment line in bold, dark ink.

"What is that?" Marcus demanded, stepping up close behind me.

"My counter-offer," I told Gable. I slid the signed document across the scratched wood. "I waive all parental rights. Effective immediately. Marcus assumes one hundred percent financial responsibility for both minors."

Gable blinked rapidly. His eyes darted from my signature to the bold header at the top of the page.

"Wait," Marcus said. The arrogance drained out of his voice, replaced by sudden confusion. "You're just giving up? Just like that?"

"They aren't my biological children, Marcus," I said, capping my pen with a sharp click. "And they've made their preference perfectly clear. I'm not going to stand in the way of your new family."

"Clara, be reasonable," Marcus stammered, grabbing my elbow. "You raised them. You can't just walk away and dump all the daily responsibilities on me. I have a company to run."

I yanked my arm out of his grip.

"Chloe handles your schedule," I reminded him, my tone icy. "She can handle the parent-teacher conferences and the teenage tantrums. I just want my money."

"Your money?" Marcus sneered, recovering his bravado. "You haven't worked in seven years. You don't have any money."

"Read the second page of the agreement, Mr. Gable," David instructed, stepping up beside me.

The opposing lawyer flipped the page. His face turned an alarming shade of gray.

"Mr. Sterling," Gable whispered, his finger tracing the text. "She's demanding immediate liquidation of the primary joint trust. And she's invoking the proxy clause from the original corporate charter. She holds fifty-one percent voting power."

Marcus turned on me, his eyes wide. "You're trying to steal my company?"

"I'm reclaiming my initial investment," I corrected him. "With interest."

"What proxy clause?" Marcus snapped, leaning over the table to read the document. "I dissolved those initial shares years ago."

"You didn't," I said. "You buried the paperwork because you didn't want to pay the taxes. But the original contract stands."

The heavy oak doors to Courtroom 4B swung open. The bailiff stepped out into the hall, holding a clipboard.

"Sterling versus Sterling-Hayes," the bailiff announced loudly. "Judge Miller is ready."

We filed into the courtroom. I didn't sit at the petitioner's table. The judge banged his wooden gavel against the sounding block, calling the room to order. I stood up, walked right past the wooden partition, and headed straight for the exit. Before pushing the heavy door open, I dropped a single sheet of paper onto Marcus's desk—the finalized forensic accounting list of his offshore accounts, completely missing the standard non-disclosure signature block at the bottom.
