Chapter 1

A bullet meant for Donald Pierce shattered my leg instead.

For three years, I was the strategist in the shadows, the architect of his rise from obscurity to the head of the Callahan family.

It was the eve of the grand dinner where he was to announce our relationship to all of Chicago.

Instead, he personally placed the "Ice Queen" diamond necklace, the symbol of the family's Donna, around the neck of his mistress, Cassidy Flynn.

"Kylie, with a leg like that, you can't perform the duties of a Donna. Cassidy has been with me for a while, and she deserves a title. Think of this as her compensation."

He pulled me into his arms, his tone both gentle and pragmatic. "You've always been sensible; you'll understand. Don't worry, you'll still have everything you want. You will always be the one I love most."

He was certain that, with a crippled leg and my father and brother dead, I couldn't survive without the power and protection he provided.

I clenched the encrypted phone in my pocket—the one holding the truth about my father and brother's murders—swallowed the metallic tang of blood rising in my throat, and lowered my eyes in submission.

But he didn't know that when he crushed the last shred of my love, I, Kylie Callahan, was no longer the helpless cripple he could control.

"Be careful."

I gently caressed the "Ice Queen" necklace, the cold fire of the diamonds flashing in my eyes.

This was what Donald had prepared for me. For three years, I had endlessly imagined how it would look gracing my neck.

Tomorrow, I would wear it and, as the future Donna of the Callahan family, finally step into the light.

The door swung open, carrying in a gust of wind tainted with cologne and cheap perfume.

"Kylie," Donald's voice called out, laced with a complexity I couldn't decipher.

I turned, and my smile froze solid on my face when I saw the woman clinging to him in a garish pink dress.

Cassidy Flynn. His mistress.

She was wrapped around Donald's arm like a vine, a triumphant smirk plastered on her heavily made-up face.

"Donald, darling, is this the famous 'Ice Queen'? It's exquisite," she cooed, her voice dripping with sickening sweetness as her eyes devoured the necklace.

Alarm bells shrieked in my head, and I instinctively tightened my grip on the velvet box.

Donald stepped forward, his expression impassive, and held out his hand. "Give it to me."

"Donald, what's wrong?" I clutched the box tighter. "Don't we need this for the dinner tomorrow?"

He didn't answer, merely repeating in a cold tone, "Give it to me."

His blue eyes held an undeniable authority that could not be refused. My fingers went slack.

Donald took the necklace, turned, and fastened it around Cassidy's neck.

Countless diamonds sparked at her throat, the light so sharp it seared my eyes.

It felt as if all the blood in my body had turned to ice.

"It suits you perfectly," Donald said with a satisfied nod, then turned to me. "Kylie, I need to talk to you."

"Tomorrow night, Cassidy takes my place. You will stay behind the scenes."

My mind went blank, a deafening buzz drowning out everything.

"What?" My voice was so shrill it didn't sound like my own. "Donald Pierce, what did you just say?"

"You heard me." His tone was terrifyingly calm. "Cassidy has been with me for a while; she needs a title. This is her compensation."

I stared at him, my voice trembling. "Then what about me? What about everything I've done for you?"

"You?" Donald let out a soft laugh, a smile that cut like a razor. "Kylie, with that leg, how are you going to dance at galas? How are you going to work a room full of old sharks for me?"

He knelt to meet my gaze, his tone condescending, as if placating a petulant child.

"Cassidy will stand in the spotlight for you. All you have to do is rest peacefully here at the estate and enjoy my love. Isn't that better?"

"You promised me!" I shrieked. "We would rule Chicago together, you as king, me as queen! You said it yourself!"

Donald's brow furrowed, a flash of displeasure in his eyes. "Kylie, stop making a scene. You know you're the one I love, but love is worthless when it comes to power."

Cassidy stepped forward then, taking my hand, her voice deceptively soft.

"Kylie, don't be sad. I would never compete with you for his affection."

As she spoke, her sharp nails dug viciously into the back of my hand.

I tried to pull my hand away, but she gripped it tighter, her nails nearly piercing my skin.

"Let go!" I struggled to break free.

"Kylie!" Donald shot to his feet, grabbing my shoulders and forcing me back down into the chair.

He looked down at me, his eyes delivering a cold, final judgment.

"In your state, what man other than me would want a cripple? Enough. Stay in your room tomorrow."

In that instant, I saw the truth in his eyes.

Disgust. Contempt. And the casual air of someone bestowing charity.

He had never seen me as an equal partner, only as a canary in a gilded cage whose wings he had personally broken.

Now that his pet canary could no longer sing, she was no match for the stray he'd just dragged in.
