Chapter 1

The silver gown had taken me three months to save for, working extra shifts in the academy kitchens just to afford the fabric. As I smoothed the silk over my hips one final time, my reflection in the cracked dormitory mirror showed a girl I barely recognized—hopeful, radiant, transformed by anticipation.

Tonight was my eighteenth birthday. Tonight, everything would change.

The grand ceremonial hall buzzed with hundreds of pack members, their excited chatter creating a symphony of expectation. Crystal chandeliers cast dancing shadows across marble floors, and the air was thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and anticipation. I clutched my hands together to stop their trembling as I made my way through the crowd, my silver heels clicking against the polished stone.

Everyone knew. The whispers had followed me for weeks—Luna's ceremony, Luna's night, the future Alpha King's mate reveal. Some looks held curiosity, others barely concealed disdain, but all eyes tracked my movement toward the raised dais where Zane stood.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I approached him. Zane looked magnificent in his ceremonial black suit, the future crown prince in all his devastating glory. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his strong jaw set with that familiar confidence that had made me fall in love with him as a child. When our eyes met across the distance, I searched for some flicker of the boy who had once promised to protect me, who had held my hand in secret and whispered that we would rule together someday.

But his golden eyes were cold as winter stone.

"Pack members of the Royal Academy," Zane's voice boomed across the hall, commanding instant silence. "Tonight marks not only Luna's eighteenth birthday, but a pivotal moment for our kingdom's future."

I climbed the steps to the dais, my legs shaking beneath the silver silk. This was it. This was the moment I had dreamed of since I was seven years old, when the pack elders first whispered that the future Alpha King and I shared the sacred mate bond.

Zane turned to face me fully, and I felt the familiar electric pull of our connection, that invisible thread that had always existed between us. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, yearning to complete the bond that would make us whole.

"I stand before you tonight," Zane continued, his voice carrying to every corner of the hall, "to announce my chosen mate."

I stepped closer, my heart so full of joy I thought it might burst. The crowd held its collective breath.

"I reject Luna Blackwood as my mate," he declared, the words falling like stones into still water. "Instead, I claim Sophia Whitmore, daughter of the noble Whitmore bloodline, as my chosen Luna Queen."

The world tilted sideways.

For a moment, I couldn't process the words. They seemed to hang in the air like smoke, impossible and unreal. The faces in the crowd blurred together, their expressions shifting from anticipation to shock to something that looked almost like hunger for drama.

"What?" The word escaped my lips as barely a whisper.

Zane's golden eyes met mine without flinching. "You heard correctly. I reject you, Luna Blackwood, as my mate and future queen. You are not suitable for the position."

The mate bond, that sacred thread I had cherished my entire life, suddenly felt like molten metal in my veins. The rejection hit me like lightning, a physical agony that started in my chest and radiated outward until every nerve ending screamed in protest.

I collapsed to my knees, the silver gown pooling around me like spilled moonlight. The pain was unlike anything I had ever experienced—as if someone was tearing my soul in half with burning claws. My wolf howled in anguish, a sound that seemed to echo from somewhere deep inside my bones.

The crowd erupted.

"Did you see that?"

"She actually thought she had a chance!"

"An Omega as queen? How delusional."

Their laughter cut through me like shards of glass. I pressed my hands to my chest, trying to hold myself together as wave after wave of rejection pain crashed over me. Through my tears, I saw Sophia Whitmore glide forward like a beautiful predator, her golden hair gleaming under the chandeliers, her perfect smile radiating triumph.

She was everything I wasn't—tall, elegant, pure-blooded Beta with connections that stretched across three kingdoms. As she took her place beside Zane, her hand sliding possessively around his arm, I saw the future I had dreamed of crumble into dust.

"Zane," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Please. We're meant to be together. You promised—"

"I promised nothing," he cut me off, his voice like ice. "Whatever childish fantasies you've been harboring, it's time to let them go. You're an Omega, Luna. You were never queen material."

Sophia leaned closer to him, her lips curving in a smile that didn't reach her cold blue eyes. "Oh, Zane, don't be so harsh. I'm sure she'll find someone more... appropriate to her station."

The crowd's laughter grew louder, more vicious. I could hear individual voices now, each one a dagger to my already shattered heart.

"Look at her, crying like a child!"

"Did she really think the future Alpha King would choose an Omega?"

"How embarrassing."

I tried to stand, but my legs wouldn't support me. The rejection pain was getting worse, not better, as if my body was slowly realizing that the bond it had been preparing for my entire life would never be completed. Instead, it was being severed, cut away like a diseased limb.

Zane looked down at me with something that might have been pity, but felt more like disgust. "You should go, Luna. This ceremony is for pack members who matter."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I managed to get to my feet, swaying slightly as the hall spun around me. Through the crowd of sneering faces, I caught sight of the exit, and suddenly all I could think about was escape.

I ran.

My silver heels clicked frantically against the marble as I pushed through the crowd, their mocking laughter following me like a pack of hunting wolves. The beautiful gown that had taken me months to afford caught on chairs and doorframes as I fled, the delicate fabric tearing with soft, defeated sounds.

Behind me, I could hear Zane's voice resuming the ceremony, but his words were lost in the roaring of blood in my ears and the sound of my own ragged breathing. The mate bond continued to burn like acid in my veins, a constant reminder of what I had lost—or rather, what I had never truly had.

I burst through the academy doors into the cool night air, but even the forest beyond seemed to mock me with its serene beauty. The moon hung full and bright overhead, the same moon that was supposed to bless my union tonight.

Instead, it witnessed my destruction.

When I opened my eyes again, I had transmigrated into Vivian Hartwell-the long-lost "real" daughter with a tragically cursed fate. I had barely been taken back into the Hartwell family before they forced me to attend a so-called "death matchmaking" event in Kingsford-on behalf of Natalie Hartwell, the fake heiress-to meet Damian Blackwood, the infamous "living reaper." Rumor had it Damian was brutal and bloodthirsty-every woman who'd ever been involved with him either ended up dead or driven insane. At the event, over a hundred socialites were trembling on their knees, silently praying they wouldn't be the one chosen. Just as Damian let out a cold smirk and reached to pick his unlucky victim, I took a deep breath from the back of the crowd. The scent emanating from him was a rare, potent masculine essence-something encountered perhaps once in ten millennia. For a painfully picky succubus like me, this was nothing short of salvation. I kicked aside the girl blocking my way, my eyes practically glowing as I threw both hands up. "Pick me! Hurry, pick me!"

The ceremonial preparation hall buzzed with excited energy as seamstresses fluttered around me like devoted butterflies. The annual Moon Ceremony was only three days away, and the pristine white dress they'd crafted for me hung like a cloud of silk and moonbeams against the ornate wooden frame. "Miss Bella, you look absolutely radiant," gushed Mrs. Henderson, the head seamstress, as she adjusted the delicate silver embroidery along the bodice. "Alpha Anakin will be so proud to have you as his Luna." I forced a smile, though something twisted uncomfortably in my chest. Lyra, my wolf, had been restless all morning, pacing anxiously in the back of my mind. *Something feels wrong,* she whispered, but I pushed her concerns aside. This was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of my life—the final preparations before I would officially become Luna of the Silvercrest Pack. The heavy oak doors suddenly swung open, and Hope James glided in like she owned the place. Her honey-blonde hair cascaded perfectly over her shoulders, and she clutched a bottle of deep red wine against her chest, her lips curved in what I'd learned to recognize as her signature fake smile.
