Chapter 4

Theo came to see me the next afternoon carrying the stuffed gray wolf I had sewn for his third birthday.

For one foolish second, hope moved faster than pain.

I pushed myself higher against the pillows and held out a hand. "Come here, sweetheart."

He stopped three feet from the bed.

His eyes moved over the oxygen line, the bruises on my arms, and the dark stain where my incision had seeped through the bandage. He hugged the toy tighter.

"Mom," he whispered. "Did you really try to kill Aunt Bianca?"

My hand fell.

"Who asked you to come here?"

"I wanted to know."

"Who told you I poisoned her?"

He looked toward the door.

Knox stepped inside.

He placed one hand on Theo's shoulder and kept the other in his pocket. "He's heard the same facts the council has heard."

"He is nine."

"He is the future heir. He needs to understand threats to this family."

"I am this family."

Theo's face crumpled. "Aunt Bianca cries when people say your name. She says she keeps seeing the banquet."

"I keep seeing it too."

He stared at the floor.

"Do you remember what you said when Sarah had one antidote?" I asked.

Knox's hand tightened on his shoulder. "Evelyn, don't do this."

"He deserves to understand the question he is asking me."

Theo's eyes filled with tears. "I thought you were stronger."

"I was poisoned. Strength was not an antidote."

"But you lived."

The sentence came out in Knox's cadence.

I closed my eyes for one beat.

"Yes," I said. "I lived. My wolf did not."

Theo's head snapped up. "What?"

Knox frowned. "We don't need to discuss every medical detail with him."

"Nyra is gone," I told my son. "I will never shift again."

Theo's fingers loosened around the stuffed wolf. "But you said wolves don't leave us."

I remembered the night I taught him his first shift-breathing exercise. He had been four, terrified by the pressure building under his skin. Nyra had curled close to his tiny wolf through the family bond, humming calm into him until he slept.

"They don't choose to," I said. "Sometimes bodies are hurt so badly that choice is taken away."

"Did the poison do it?"

"Yes."

His eyes moved to Knox. "Would the blue medicine have saved her?"

Knox's face went still.

I could have answered for him. I did not.

Theo waited. "Dad?"

"It would have reduced the damage," Knox said finally.

The boy looked down at the toy in his arms. For the first time, the cost of his plea became something he could not hide behind the word strong.

His mouth opened. No sound came out.

I watched the information rearrange the banquet in his memory. His mother had not simply held on longer. Something inside me had died while he ran after Bianca.

Theo took one step toward the bed.

Knox stopped him with a hand across his chest.

The gesture was instinctive. Protective.

Protecting him from me.

I stared at Knox's arm until he noticed what he was doing.

He lowered it, but the damage was already done.

"The council wants an apology before the tribunal," Knox said. "There is still a way to contain this."

"An apology for what?"

"Go to Bianca's room. Tell her the household conflict went too far. Promise you will not interfere with her recovery. I will use my authority to suspend the case."

I almost admired the cruelty of it.

"You want me to confess to attempted murder so you can protect me from the accusation."

"I want peace."

"You want obedience."

His jaw tightened. "Do not turn this into another power struggle."

"You opened a tribunal against your poisoned mate. There is no other way to describe it."

Theo began to cry. "Mom, just say sorry. Then you can come home."

I looked at him. "Would you apologize for something you did not do if the person asking had already decided you were guilty?"

"If it kept our family together."

That answer hurt because I had taught him exactly the opposite. I had raised him to tell the truth even when truth cost him friends.

Knox stepped closer and pinched my chin between his fingers, forcing my face up.

"You have until morning," he said quietly. "Do not throw away your family because of pride."

I reached up and removed his hand from my face.

"Do not touch me again without permission."

For a moment, shock replaced anger.

I took the wedding ring from my finger. The skin beneath it was pale from five years of wear.

Theo stared at the band. "Are you divorcing Dad?"

"I am deciding what I can live with."

"Because of Bianca?"

"Because of choices your father and I made. Adults are responsible for their own choices. You are not responsible for fixing this marriage."

Knox looked irritated by the distinction, but I needed Theo to hear it. If I left, I would not let either adult turn him into a messenger or a weapon. Whatever happened between Knox and me, Theo would not be asked to choose a courtroom side before he was old enough to understand what the adults had done. That boundary was mine to keep.

I placed the ring on the metal tray beside my bed.

"There," I said. "Now you can stop confusing possession with family."

Theo made a small, broken sound.

Knox stared at the ring.

"Morning," he repeated. "That is your deadline."

He guided Theo toward the door.

My son looked back once.

I wanted him to run to me. I wanted to tell him none of this was his fault.

But forgiveness offered too quickly would only teach him that cruelty disappeared when the victim loved you enough.

The door closed.

I waited until their footsteps faded. Then I reached beneath the blanket and checked the train ticket hidden in the lining of my coat.

Midnight.

Knox had given me until morning.

I had already decided I would be gone before then.
