Chapter 5

I felt the first kick in my sleep.

Not the soft, fluttering movement I had dreamed about — the imagined flutter of a pup I'd waited two years to feel. This was a heel driven hard into my lower abdomen, and it punched me awake so fast that I gasped before I understood what had happened.

I lay still. The storm was still howling outside. Gavin was breathing slow and heavy on my left. Rosie was between us, curled on her side, her face angled toward him.

Her eyes were closed.

I pressed my hand to my stomach and told myself I was wrong. Told myself it was a dream-twitch, a knee, an accident. Children kick in their sleep. That's a thing children do.

The second one came thirty seconds later.

Harder. Deliberate. Aimed.

My wolf didn't scream yet. She went electric — every nerve lit up at once, that pre-scream stillness that is worse than the sound itself. I curled slightly, instinctively, turning my body to protect the thing inside me, and that small movement was all it took.

The third kick landed like a punch.

I felt something shift inside me that had no name. Just a wrongness — hot and sudden — that traveled up through my body and took my vision with it. White. Just white for a moment. Then the pain arrived, real and specific and very bad, and below it, below everything, the wet warmth I recognized from the two losses before this one.

No.

My wolf screamed.

Not outward. She screamed inside me, that primal, tearing sound that has nothing to do with rank or composure or the careful face a Luna keeps — the sound of a mother whose pup is in danger inside her own body, and she cannot get to it, cannot reach it, cannot put herself between her pup and the thing that is hurting it.

I grabbed Gavin's arm. I didn't say anything coherent. I think I said his name. I think I said something is wrong. The pain was making it hard to form words, and my wolf was still screaming, and I was pressing my hand so hard against my stomach that I could feel my own pulse in my palm.

Gavin woke fast the way Alphas do — no groggy middle ground, just asleep and then upright, his hand already on my shoulder. He turned on the light.

He saw my face. He saw my hand. He saw the sheet.

We were moving within seconds.

---

Lena's quarters were at the end of the east wing.

I remember the corridor as a series of impressions — cold stone under my feet, the storm's howl muffled by thick walls, Gavin's arm around me and his heartbeat fast against my side, which was the most frightened I had ever felt him, and some part of me that was still capable of noticing things noticed that and filed it away.

Lena opened the door before we knocked. She took one look, and her face did the thing a healer's face does — it went very calm, very focused, the emotion tucked somewhere it would not interfere with her hands.

"Get her on the table," she said. "Now."

The next several minutes were Lena's hands and Lena's voice and the particular suspended quality of waiting to find out if the worst thing has already happened. She didn't speak to me in sentences. She gave me instructions — breathe, hold still, I need you to stay with me, Luna — and I followed them the way you follow simple directions when your body is running on something below thought.

I kept my palm on my stomach even when she needed to move it. I put it back every time.

My wolf had gone very quiet. Not calm. The quiet of an animal that is too frightened to make a sound, holding completely still because movement might tip the balance of something that is right now balanced on an edge so thin it has no width at all.

Hold on, I thought. Not a prayer. Just a fact I was insisting on. Hold on.

Lena looked up from her work. Her eyes met mine.

"The pup is still there," she said. Her voice was level, but underneath it was a weight that she was choosing her words carefully around. "Heart rate is stressed but present. The bleeding is slowing." She paused. "You need to be still for the next several hours. Complete rest. No stress, no physical exertion, nothing."

I exhaled. The breath came out in two parts, jagged and uneven, the only time all night that my composure cracked that wide.

"Lena." Gavin's voice from the chair beside me. Rough. "Will she—"

"This time," Lena said carefully, "yes."

This time. Those two words hung in the room like smoke.

I was still processing them when the sound came from the corridor.

---

It started as a gasp. Then another. Then the particular rhythm of hyperventilation — fast, shallow, panicked — and beneath it, barely audible but perfectly pitched, a child's voice saying I'm alone, nobody wants me, I can't breathe, I can't—

I felt Gavin go rigid in the chair beside me.

I turned my head and looked at him.

His face was torn. I could see it — the genuine fracture of a man pulled in two directions by two different forces, and I watched him look at me, gray-faced and bleeding on Lena's treatment bed, and then look at the door. His jaw worked. His hand on the armrest tightened until his knuckles went pale.

His wolf was moving before his mind caught up. I could see it in the way his body shifted — that pull, blood-deep and relentless, the thing he had never been able to explain to himself or name for me.

"Gavin," I said.

He looked at me. And in his eyes was the thing I had been trying not to see for days — the apology that knows it is insufficient, offered anyway because there is nothing else available.

"I'll be right back," he said.

He walked out the door.

Lena did not say anything. She turned back to her instruments, her hands steady, her face giving away nothing. But I saw her stillness. I saw the quality of it — the particular stillness of a witness who has understood what she just watched and has decided that silence is the only dignified response available to her.

I lay on the table. The storm was loud outside. The corridor sounds faded — Rosie's gasping easing, Gavin's murmur replacing it, the practiced soothing of a man whose wolf had already chosen.

The mate bond screamed at me.

I want to describe it accurately, because I don't think anyone who hasn't felt it can understand what that scream is like. It is not metaphor. It is biological and spiritual and chemical all at once — every tether the Moon Goddess wove between us pulling taut simultaneously, every cell in my body registering his absence from the room as a wound, howling at me to call him back, to forgive, to hold the bond together because the bond is sacred and mates do not—

My wolf thrashed. Hard. Against every single one of those tethers at once, the way an animal gnaws its own leg off to get out of a trap, the way something that understands it will die if it stays stops caring about the cost of leaving.

And then, between one breath and the next, something went quiet.

Not broken. Not numb. Quiet.

The silence of a mind that has stopped negotiating with a lie.

I put my hand on my stomach. My pup's heartbeat was there, faint and fast and stubborn, holding on.

I held on with it.

And in that cold, clear quiet, I started building the list of everything I was going to need.

Born a Lycan princess through a human surrogate, she was stolen from the castle as an infant by the very woman meant to nurse her, a woman who turned out to be a witch. A crown. Her bloodline's legacy. But Sybil was never meant to be a broodmare queen. She grew up human with the strength and senses of a shewolf and the magic of the witches, which got transferred to her while she was still in the womb of her surrogate. She's strong, intelligent, disciplined, and lethal. An MMA champion. A combat instructor for a private military contractor. A woman who learned to fight before she ever learned to howl. When the magic of her witch mother begins to fade, and the werewolf King finally tracks them down, Sybil is summoned back to a kingdom that remembers her only as its missing heir. Betrayed by her hybrid fiancé, who abandoned her to marry the princess of their kingdom, Sybil made a decision that will shake three kingdoms. She returned. Not for love. Not for duty. For revenge... And fate claims they are her mates. There's only one problem. Sybil cannot feel her wolf, for it was caged deep within her soul. She cannot smell her mates. She is a Lycan princess trapped in a wolfless body. While her four Alphas believe they are claiming their future Luna and Queen, Sybil is already planning something far more dangerous. She will not stand beside a king. She will not be used to breed to secure bloodlines. And she certainly will not be ruled. If the kingdom wants a queen... They're about to kneel to a rebel queen. Because Sybil von Rosen is not an ordinary Luna. She is the last Lycan heir. The forbidden daughter of witches. The mate of four Alpha Guardians.
