The Alpha Who Hunted Me First Novel Cover

The Alpha Who Hunted Me First

At seven, Wren Calder watched Ashbourne wolves burn Duskwood to the ground. She was the only one who ran fast enough. Fifteen years later, she enters Ashbourne territory under a dead woman's name, wolfsbane hidden in her sleeve, ready to end the Alpha's line with one drop. Then Alpha Kian Ashbourne looks at her, and her wolf drops to its belly. Fated mates shouldn't exist for girls like Wren, not with the son of the man who slaughtered her pack. But Kian doesn't kill her or expose her. He locks her in his own house and dares her to try again. Now she must survive a pack that wants her dead, resist a bond that demands forgiveness, and uncover the truth: someone else lit the fire at Duskwood, and that someone is still alive.

Chapter 3

The Beta's name was Emory, and he had the kind of face that gave nothing away for free.

"Care to explain," he said, "why my Alpha is alone in a locked study with a kitchen girl nobody's ever seen before, smelling like he just took a hit to the chest?"

"It's handled," Kian said.

"It doesn't smell handled." Emory's gaze cut to Wren, narrowed, and she felt it move over her like a blade testing for weak points. "It smells like a mate bond, which is either the best or the worst thing that's happened to this pack in a decade, depending entirely on who she turns out to be. So which is it, Kian?"

"Emory."

"No," Emory said, stepping fully into the room, shutting the door behind him with a finality that made Wren's skin prickle. "You don't get to Emory me right now. I've been your Beta since we were pups. I know what that tone in your voice means, and I know it means you're about to make a decision with your gut instead of your head, which is exactly the thing I exist to stop you from doing." He turned to Wren fully now. "Where are you from, girl?"

"That's not your business," Kian said.

"Everything that walks into this house uninvited is my business." Emory's eyes had gone sharp, assessing, and Wren watched something shift behind them, some memory surfacing that he didn't like at all. He stepped closer, tilted his head, and inhaled once, slow and deliberate. "Wait."

"Emory."

"I know that scent under the lavender." Emory's voice had dropped, gone low and strange. "Ash and river willow. I haven't smelled that particular combination since I was a boy standing on a hillside watching Duskwood territory burn." His gaze snapped to Kian, wide now, and then back to Wren with something that looked almost like fear. "You're Duskwood-born."

The room went dead silent.

"Say something," Emory said to Kian, voice tight. "Tell me I'm wrong."

"You're not wrong," Kian said.

"Moon Goddess help us." Emory dragged a hand down his face. "Do you understand what happens if the council finds out there's a Duskwood survivor standing in your study? Half of them still believe your father did the pack a favor putting an end to that mess before the border war got worse. The other half never forgave him for it and have been waiting fifteen years for an excuse to say the Ashbourne line is cursed for what he did. Either way, Kian, you cannot have her here."

"She's my mate."

The words landed in the room like a stone dropped down a well, and Wren watched Emory's face go through disbelief, horror, and something that looked uncomfortably close to pity, all in the space of a few seconds.

"You cannot be serious," Emory said.

"I've never been more serious in my life."

"Kian." Emory's voice cracked, just slightly, the first real emotion Wren had heard from him. "Your betrothal to Selene Marrow is the only thing holding the river alliance together right now. You know that. I know that. The whole council knows that. If word gets out that you've bonded with a Duskwood survivor instead, on the same night you were supposed to be finalizing the alliance terms with her father, it doesn't just embarrass us. It could break the treaty completely, and we are not in a position to afford a war on our northern border right now."

"I didn't ask to be mated to her," Kian said. "It happened the second she walked into that hall. You know how the bond works. There isn't a version of tonight where I get to choose otherwise."

"There's absolutely a version where you choose otherwise," Emory shot back. "Plenty of wolves ignore the pull. Plenty of Alphas have put duty over a bond before, especially when the timing is this catastrophic."

Wren watched Kian's jaw tighten, watched something in him go rigid and immovable in a way that told her more about him in that moment than anything he'd said all night.

"I'm not one of them," he said.

Emory stared at him for a long moment, then turned that same sharp attention back to Wren, studying her the way a man studies a storm rolling in, trying to guess how bad it's going to get.

"What were you doing in that hall tonight," he said. It wasn't really a question. "Because I don't believe for one second that a Duskwood survivor walked into this pack's gathering by accident, on the one night every visiting lord in three territories happened to be under this roof."

Wren said nothing. Kian didn't answer for her either, which surprised her more than she wanted to admit.

"She's not going to tell you," Kian said finally. "And I'm not going to make her, not tonight. What matters right now is that nobody outside this room finds out what she is until I've decided how to handle it."

"And if the council finds out on their own?"

"Then I deal with that when it happens." Kian's voice had gone hard, final, the voice of a man closing a door on an argument. "In the meantime, she stays under my protection, in my house, and anyone who has a problem with that can bring it to me directly."

Emory looked between them, something working behind his eyes that Wren couldn't quite read, some calculation she suspected had less to do with pack politics and more to do with a memory he hadn't shared out loud.

"There's something you should both know," he said slowly, "before you decide anything else tonight."

"What."

"The fire at Duskwood." Emory's gaze flicked to Wren, careful now, almost gentle in a way that put her instantly on guard. "I was there. Not in the pack, obviously, I was barely old enough to shift, but I rode out with the war party that night because your father wouldn't leave me behind, Kian, not after what happened to my own family the year before. I saw the burn line before anyone put the fires out completely." He paused, and for the first time all night, his voice lost its edge entirely. "Wolf-fire burns hot and fast and clean. What I saw that night didn't burn like that. It burned slow, in patterns that didn't make sense for a pack raid. I was fifteen. I didn't know what I was looking at. I've had fifteen years to think about it since, and I still don't have an answer that sits right with me."

Wren's whole body had gone cold.

"What are you saying," she managed.

"I'm saying," Emory said, "that I don't think Garrick Ashbourne set that fire alone. I think someone else was there that night, someone with a reason to make sure Duskwood never survived long enough to ask questions, and I think your father, Kian, spent the rest of his life carrying blame that might not have been entirely his to carry." He looked between them both, grim now, the weight of fifteen years of silence finally cracking open in his voice. "If that's true, then whoever actually did it is still out there. And they've had fifteen years to make sure nobody ever found out."

The lamp guttered low in its dish. Somewhere outside, the gathering had finally started winding down, voices fading into the night, and Wren stood frozen between an Alpha she was bonded to against every instinct she owned and a Beta who had just handed her the first real crack in the story she'd built her entire life around.

"You're certain of what you saw," Kian said quietly.

"I've never been certain of anything in my life the way I'm certain of that," Emory said. "And I think, whatever happens with your bond, whatever the council does when they find out, that's the thread we actually need to pull. Because if I'm right, somebody in this world has been sitting comfortably for fifteen years believing nobody would ever come looking."

Wren's hands had gone numb at her sides.

"Someone is," she said. "I am."

Emory looked at her for a long moment, and something in his expression shifted, wariness giving way to something that might, eventually, become respect.

"Then Moon Goddess help whoever that is," he said, "because I don't think either of you is going to stop until you find them."
