Chapter 2

Cordelia is debating with herself if she will leave the area right this instant. She is feeling so uncomfortable already. However, her curiosity got the best of her. Since there are no guards in sight, she sneaks slowly to the door of the room where the insanely obscene sounds are coming from. She stands with her back against the wall. She does not have to stand close because the sound of moaning starts to peak even louder.

Is the Prince too arrogant that he does these acts openly in the palace? Or he truly does not care what others think of him? He is a Prince so maybe he is really full of himself.

Cordelia feels revulsion towards this Prince who seems to care only for pleasure from women. The pleasuring sounds last for a few more minutes. Even Cordelia starts feeling something different upon hearing such steamy moans and grunts. Then it stops. She places her head against the closed door to try to overhear better. She tries to hold her breath, afraid that it might be heard from the inside.

"You are such an amazing lover, my Prince. No one can compare to your skill in giving me such a mind-blowing pleasure each time we have sex." The woman says to the Prince in a sweet voice.

Cordelia grimaces from the undeniable irritation she feels that this indecent woman has provided pleasure to Prince Bernard on more than just several occasions. She sounds so familiar with the Prince as if they have been together for a long time.

"Are you trying to tease me again Freya?" That is the voice of Prince Bernard.

Cordelia cannot help but imagine the appearance of the Prince. His voice sounds sexy.

Or is it the effect of what she heard a few minutes ago that leads her to these imaginations?

"You know I do not tease. I have always been honest to you." The woman replies in an alluring voice. She is definitely trying to seduce the Prince once more.

"I know that but you seem to be keeping something from me these past few days." Prince Bernard sounds worried about something.

Cordelia presses her ear harder against the door so she can hear well.

A long silence falls in the room.

Freya takes a deep breath and starts to speak again.

"My Prince, we have been together for a long time. You know my affections for you are genuine. I am aware of my position in this palace and yours as well. I can never be your bride." Freya says these things as she stands from the bed and walks toward the closed window. She sounded upset.

Cordelia hears the sound of footsteps moving closer to the closed window by her side. She crouches down to hide in case the window is opened from inside the room. Nothing happened. Another set of footsteps seems to walk towards the window. It must be the Prince now. Cordelia thought to herself as she tries to picture what is going on inside the chambers. She hears clearly the voices of Prince Bernard and Freya from outside the door.

"What is all this talk about being a bride? Freya, you know that I do not have any intentions to get married yet. What are you so worried about?" Prince Bernard responds in a gentle tone. He appears to be concerned with Freya's sudden seriousness.

Freya laughs in a mocking way.

"It may seem that the King and the Queen have not informed you of anything at all." Freya says in a knowing tone.

"What are you trying to hint on, Freya?" Prince Bernard asks, not hiding his confusion.

"My Prince, you are to be married to your destined bride! She is foretold by your father's all-knowing witch!" Freya spits out these words with venom. She is so upset with the news that she is telling the Prince whom she considers to be hers alone.

"What? How come my father never told me this?" Prince Bernard demands more information from his lover.

"Apparently, your father's royal witch decided that they should search for your destined bride first before they even tell you. According to your witch, you are to marry a commoner's daughter so that the people will continue to stay loyal to the King. Marrying their son to a commoner's daughter will ensure your family's rule for a long time. This destined wife of yours will be loved by the people." Freya continues to narrate in a bitter manner.

It appears that the Prince has no idea about their forced marriage too. Cordelia frowns recalling her situation.

"What if I refuse to marry?" Prince Bernard asks but he knows the answer already. No one defies his father, the King.

Cordelia feels annoyed with the words of Prince Bernard. She recalls her own dislike for this forced marriage.

"You are just saying that now because you have not tasted her. Soon, you will forget about me while she warms you up in bed." Freya says shamelessly.

Cordelia's face gets hot upon hearing these words coming from the mouth of the woman who had sex with her future husband. How can she be jealous like that? She has no right to speak that way to the Prince!

"I will not be like that! If I am forced to marry this farm girl for the people to be happy with my father's rule, I will give that stupid girl so many hardships that she will regret being with me!" Bernard exclaims to Freya so sure of himself.

"Is that what you call your apology for not making me your bride?" Freya sounds seductive once more upon hearing Bernard's promise of an unhappy marriage with Cordelia.

The conversation in the chambers dies down after that.

Cordelia stands from her crouch quickly but quietly. She is so confused about where to go. How can she be in this kind of situation right now? What kind of life will she have in this palace as a wife of a Prince who does not like to have her in the first place? She wishes to run away again but where will she go?

I traced my finger along the delicate silver chain of the bracelet, feeling each link as if memorizing its pattern one final time. Seven years. Seven years of what I thought was love, devotion, and the sacred mate bond that the Moon Goddess herself had blessed us with. Tomorrow would mark our seventh mate ceremony anniversary. Seven—a sacred number among our kind. The number of completion, of perfection. How fitting that it would also mark the completion of my illusion. I had been cleaning our bedroom, preparing for tomorrow's celebration when I found it—my precious silver mate bracelet, the one Alexander had placed on my wrist during our ceremony—carelessly tossed into my bathroom waste bin. At first, I thought it must have fallen in by accident. But as I reached to retrieve it, a crumpled receipt caught my eye.

The crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over the grand ballroom, but nothing could warm the chill in my heart as I stood alone among the sea of dignitaries. The annual Moon Ceremony was supposed to be our pack's most sacred celebration—a time when the Alpha and Luna stood together before the Moon Goddess's blessing. Yet here I was, forcing smile after smile, explaining away Cameron's absence with practiced excuses. "Luna Brooke," Elder Morris approached with a raised glass, "another successful year for Silverclaw. Though I wonder where Alpha Cameron might be?" I straightened my shoulders, ignoring the whispers that followed me like shadows. "He's handling some urgent pack business. He'll join us shortly for the Alpha Toast." The lie tasted bitter on my tongue. Five years of marriage, and I still didn't know where my husband spent his evenings—only that it wasn't by my side. "Of course," Elder Morris nodded, though his eyes said he knew better. "Though it's unusual for an Alpha to miss the blessing." I nodded politely and moved on, my heels clicking against the marble floor.

The fluorescent lights in the pack hospital made everything look corpse-pale. I stood beside the examination table where my mate lay, his skin gray and clammy, his once-commanding Alpha aura reduced to barely a flicker. Dr. Aris adjusted his glasses and delivered the verdict with clinical detachment. "End-stage renal failure. The wolf-poisoning has destroyed both kidneys completely." Giana's perfectly manicured hand flew to her throat. "There must be something—" "There is." Dr. Aris turned to me. "Luna Adelina possesses rare healing bloodlines. She's a perfect match." I didn't hesitate.

The mind-link punched through my sleep at 11:47 PM. *Luna. Medical wing. Now.* It was Rowan, our Beta, his voice tight in a way I had not heard in five years of marking. I sat up in the bed I shared with my mate and reached for him out of habit. The sheets beside me were cold. I pulled on jeans and a sweater. My Healer's kit was already by the door. I have been the Ironveil Pack's lead Healer since I was nineteen. Five years as Luna.

The water in the bucket was already gray, swirling with the grime of the dungeon floor. My knees ached against the cold, unforgiving stone, the damp chill seeping into my bones. I was the mate of the Alpha, yet here I was, scrubbing the cells like an Omega, while the real power in the pack wore heels and watched me with a smirk. "You missed a spot, Nellie," Jessica Stevens said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. She stood just outside the iron bars, looking pristine in a white dress that seemed out of place in the gloom of the underground prison. I dipped the brush back into the water, fighting the urge to tremble. "I'll get it, Jessica." "Good girl. Silas hates a dirty house, you know. We all just want him happy." She leaned against the lever that controlled the heavy iron door of the adjacent cell. I froze.

The grand ballroom of Shadowmoon Pack's estate sparkled under crystal chandeliers, filled with the most influential Alphas and Lunas from across the region. I stood beside Jonathan on the elevated platform, my hands clasped in front of me, forcing my spine straight despite the weight of six years pressing down on my shoulders. The annual Inter-Pack Alliance gathering was always a display of power and prestige, but tonight felt different. The tension radiating from Jonathan made my skin crawl, and the way his eyes kept drifting to where Lena stood among the crowd sent ice through my veins. My emerald silk gown, chosen specifically to represent Shadowmoon Pack's colors, felt like a costume now. The Luna pendant at my throat—my mother's pendant—seemed to burn against my skin as I watched Jonathan's jaw clench and unclench. Whatever he was planning, my wolf was already retreating deep within me, sensing the coming storm. "Distinguished guests," Jonathan's voice boomed across the ballroom, commanding immediate silence. "Tonight marks not only our continued alliance but a significant announcement for Shadowmoon Pack's future." My heart hammered against my ribs. No.
