Chapter 1

When the rogue injected Amelie Palmer and me with the aphrodisiac serum, I knew we were in trouble. Without the antidote, we would be driven to madness—or death.

My mate, Ayden Harper, the Lycan King, immediately pulled out the ancient heirloom antidote from his pocket. His aura, always commanding and cold, seemed even more unyielding now. He didn’t hesitate. He moved toward Amelie, his childhood savior and chosen Luna, and prepared to administer the antidote to her.

Marco Gomez, his loyal Beta, stepped forward, his voice urgent. "Alpha, there’s only one dose. You should give it to Lilliana. She’s your mate, your chosen partner."

I was on the floor, my body burning with the serum’s effects. My vision blurred, but I could still see Ayden’s face, impassive and distant. "Ayden," I gasped, my voice trembling. "Please… save me."

He didn’t even look at me. Instead, he pulled Amelie closer, her body writhing as the serum took hold. Her scent—rosemary and vanilla—filled the room, mingling with his powerful Alpha aura. He gently tilted her head back and pressed the vial to her lips. "Drink this," he said, his voice soft, almost tender. "You’ll be okay."

My heart shattered. I felt my wolf whimper in the back of my mind, a sound of pure despair. This wasn’t the first time he’d chosen her over me. Years ago, when we’d both fallen ill with a rare werewolf virus, he’d given the only cure to her. I’d fought through the illness alone, my body weakened forever.

"Alpha," Marco pleaded, dropping to his knees. "Lilliana has stood by you through everything. She’s your mate. You can’t abandon her now."

"Enough," Ayden snapped, his Alpha tone cutting through the room like a blade. He kicked Marco aside, sending him sprawling next to me. I reached out, my fingers brushing Marco’s arm, but I was too weak to do more.

I watched as Ayden pulled a piece of candy from his pocket and handed it to Amelie. "Here," he said, his voice soothing. "To take the bitterness away." His fingers lingered on her cheek, his touch gentle, affectionate.

Meanwhile, I was on the floor, my body trembling with the serum’s effects. My heat was unbearable, my mind spiraling. I knew what would happen if I didn’t get the antidote—I would die. And I was carrying his child.

"Ayden," I choked out, my voice barely audible. "I’m pregnant. Please… save our baby."

He finally turned to me, his expression cold and detached. "You’re my mate," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "I won’t abandon you. But I’m the Lycan King. I can’t break my vows, not even for you."

Before I could respond, he gestured to the door. A group of male werewolves entered, their scents aggressive and overwhelming. My stomach twisted with dread.

"There’s only one dose of the antidote," Ayden said, his tone matter-of-fact. "These men will help you. Three days, and the serum will be out of your system."

My heart stopped. "No," I whispered, my voice breaking. "You can’t do this to me."

He crouched beside me, his eyes cold. "It’s for your own good. You’ve always wanted a child, haven’t you? If one of them gets you pregnant, I’ll accept it as my own."

I stared at him, my mind reeling. Five years of marriage, of trying to build a life with him, and this was his solution? I felt my wolf howl in agony, a sound that echoed in my soul.

"Ayden," I pleaded, tears streaming down my face. "If you let them touch me, I’ll die. Our baby will die."

He stood, his expression unyielding. "You’ll survive," he said, his voice cold. "You always do."

As the men approached, I felt the last shred of hope I had for our mate bond slip away. My body burned, my mind spiraled, and I knew this was the end. But before the darkness took me, I thought of the gift I’d left for him—the one thing that would make him regret everything.

I woke with a gasp, my heart hammering against my ribs as if trying to escape. The familiar walls of my Omega quarters came into focus—the thin mattress, the single window letting in a sliver of moonlight, the worn wooden floor I'd scrubbed countless times. But something was wrong. No, something was exactly right. My lungs filled with the scent of night air, pine, and something else—something that made my wolf, Lyra, stir uneasily within me. I knew this night. I'd lived through it once before, and I'd died because of it. *Remember*, Lyra whispered in my mind, her voice urgent. *Remember everything.* I pressed my thumb hard into my palm, grounding myself as I looked at the calendar on my wall. The date glared back at me in cruel black ink—the night of Aidan's poisoning.

I stared at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, my hands trembling so badly I nearly dropped it into the chipped sink of the Omega quarters. Three years. Three years of stolen moments in Sebastian's office after midnight, of whispered promises in the dark, of believing that love could somehow bridge the gap between an Alpha heir and a wolfless Omega like me. Now I had proof that our connection was real. Undeniable. I pressed my palm against my still-flat stomach, a nervous smile tugging at my lips. This changed everything. Sebastian would have to acknowledge me now. He'd defy his father, Marcus Stone, and claim me as his true mate. We'd finally stop hiding.

Pain tore through my lower abdomen, sharp and unforgiving. I gasped, gripping the edge of the sterile examination table until my knuckles turned white. "Breathe, Vivienne. Just breathe," Elara Voss murmured. The head healer of the Ironvale Pack wiped a damp cloth across my forehead. Her voice was calm, but when I looked up, her eyes quickly darted away. Her hands lingered on my bare shoulders. It was a heavy, guilty hesitation. A beat that lasted just a second too long. I filed that look away in my mind.

The cabin groaned in the wind like something dying. I pulled the threadbare blanket tighter around my shoulders, but it did nothing against the cold that seeped through the gaps in the wooden walls. Rain dripped steadily through a crack in the roof, plinking into the metal bucket I'd placed in the corner three days ago. The sound had become a metronome marking the hours of my exile. This wasn't how I'd imagined my life when I'd defied my father and left the Silver Moon Pack. Alpha John had warned me. Begged me, actually, in that gruff way of his that passed for tenderness. "That man will break you, Nora," he'd said, his hand heavy on my shoulder. "He doesn't see you. He only sees what he's lost." But I'd been so sure.

The fluorescent lights of The Rusty Fang still burned behind my eyelids as I stumbled up the three warped wooden steps to our trailer. Fourteen hours. Fourteen hours of forcing smiles at rogue wolves who could barely afford coffee, let alone tips. My feet screamed in protest with every step, the cheap diner shoes having given up any pretense of support around hour nine. I fumbled with the keys, my fingers stiff and clumsy. The lock finally gave way with its usual grinding protest, and I pushed inside, immediately hit by the stale air that always seemed to cling to the walls no matter how many windows I opened. Cairo wasn't home. I should have felt relief. Instead, a hollow ache settled in my chest as I dropped my purse on the sagging couch and kicked off those torture devices masquerading as shoes. The silence pressed against my ears, broken only by the hum of our ancient refrigerator and the distant sound of someone's television through the thin walls.
