The 99th Voucher-His Maybach's Secret Novel Cover

The 99th Voucher-His Maybach's Secret

For four years, I played the naive housewife while hiding my brilliance behind a glass jar of one hundred promises. Julian, my billionaire husband, returns from abroad flinching from my touch, then wastes the ninety-eighth voucher on a cruel command: make Serena, his first love, his executive consultant. He never sees the bruises on her neck by his Maybach—or that his empire runs on code only I control. I tear up his demand. Two wishes remain, and he has no idea I'm about to spend them both on destruction and desire.

Chapter 3

My fingers stalled on the cold aluminum handle. Three silver dials formed the combination lock on the metallic Rimowa case.

"Half a million dollars," I repeated.

"A beachfront condo," Serena clarified. She adjusted her oversized sunglasses, making sure the midday sunlight caught the gold frames. "He always said I belonged by the water. The view is spectacular."

She waited for me to break. She wanted shouting. She wanted tears.

I offered her nothing. I tipped the suitcase back. The wheels scraped loudly against the pavement as I dragged it to the rear of my Honda. I hoisted the heavy metal box into the trunk and slammed the lid shut.

"Get in," I said.

Serena stared at the plain exterior of my sedan. "Julian didn't send the corporate SUV?"

"You get what's available," I replied, opening the driver's side door.

She scoffed, muttering under her breath as she climbed into the passenger seat.

The drive to the residential district took forty minutes. Serena spent thirty-nine of them texting on her phone, occasionally letting out a soft, amused laugh. She did not bother making conversation. I kept my eyes fixed on the highway, the two Grand Marquis penthouse keys burning a hole in my memory.

The front door of my villa clicked shut behind us.

Julian already stood in the center of the living room, his gray suit jacket discarded on the leather sofa. He had beaten us home.

He held a small slip of parchment paper between his fingers.

"Leave the bags in the hall," Julian ordered.

I dropped the handle of the Rimowa. "You skipped your board call."

"I rescheduled it." He marched toward the glass coffee table and slapped the paper down flat against the surface. "Voucher ninety-nine."

I stared at the thick parchment. "Two vouchers in twenty-four hours. You must be desperate."

"I need you to clear your things out of the master suite," he said.

My jaw clamped shut. "Excuse me?"

"Move your clothes to the guest room," Julian continued. He pointed a rigid finger toward the hallway. "Serena will take the main bedroom."

Serena dropped her designer handbag onto the entryway bench. She leaned against the wall, rubbing her temples with exaggerated care. "The turbulence triggered a massive migraine. I really need a dark space to recover."

"The guest room has blinds," I said.

"The master suite has the blackout curtains," Julian countered. "And the orthopedic mattress. She needs proper rest if she's going to lead the merger negotiations on Monday."

"You want to put your new consultant in our marital bed."

"It is a temporary arrangement, Clara. Stop making this difficult."

"I paid the down payment on this house."

"And I pay the mortgage!" he shouted. His face flushed a deep, ugly red. "I am the CEO. I make the logistical decisions. You agreed to the voucher system. I am calling it in."

"Because she has a headache."

"Because she is vital to the future of this company!" he fired back. "If she doesn't perform next week, the acquisition falls through. We lose everything."

I looked down at the parchment resting on the glass.

Four years ago, he wrote those slips with a fountain pen. He kissed my forehead and promised he would never use them to hurt me. He called them a safety net for our marriage.

Now, his hurried handwriting looked like a weapon. A knife he kept twisting.

I walked past him and pulled open the top drawer of the oak console table. The glass jar sat inside, holding exactly one remaining slip of paper.

I picked up the jar. The glass felt heavy and cold against my palm.

"What are you doing?" Julian asked. His brow furrowed.

I set the jar on the coffee table right next to voucher ninety-nine. Then, I picked up the slip he had just slapped down.

"Clara, put that down and go pack your overnight bag," he warned. His tone dropped an octave, attempting to assert authority.

I gripped the edges of the parchment. I ripped it in half.

The sharp tearing sound echoed in the quiet room.

Julian flinched. "Are you insane?"

I placed the two halves together and tore them again. The thick paper resisted, but I forced my thumbs through the fibers.

"That is a binding agreement!" Julian yelled, stepping toward me.

"No," I said. I dropped the shredded pieces onto the Persian rug. They scattered like snow. "It was a promise from a man who no longer exists."

Serena laughed from the doorway. A harsh, grating sound. "Julian, your wife is throwing a tantrum over a mattress. How embarrassing."

"Shut your mouth, Serena," Julian snapped, though he kept his furious eyes locked on me. "You violated the rules, Clara."

"I'm moving to the guest room," I replied, keeping my voice entirely flat. "You wanted the bed. You have it."

"You don't get to destroy the voucher and then comply. That's not how this works."

"Enjoy the blackout curtains," I told Serena, ignoring him completely.

I turned on my heel and walked down the hallway.

"We are not done talking about this!" Julian called out.

I stepped into the guest room and pulled the heavy wooden door shut. The lock clicked into place with a solid, satisfying thud.

Footsteps approached the door. Julian pounded his fist against the wood twice.

"Unlock this door," he demanded.

I backed away from the frame. "I need to unpack my things. I thought you had a company to run."

"You are acting like a child." His voice muffled through the thick oak. "I expect an apology at dinner."

The floorboards creaked as he walked away. A minute later, I heard the faint sound of the master bedroom door closing at the opposite end of the hall.

Silence settled over the guest room.

I did not walk to the closet. I did not touch my clothes.

I reached into the front pocket of my jeans and pulled out the cheap plastic burner phone.

The screen glowed a harsh, bright white in the dim room. I swiped past the lock screen and opened the hidden terminal application. A black command prompt appeared, waiting for instructions.

Julian thought he held all the power because his name sat at the top of the corporate masthead. He forgot who built the foundation he stood on. He forgot who wrote every single line of code that made his software functional.

My thumbs flew across the tiny digital keyboard. I typed the command for an access override.

Authorization C-Zero-Nine.

The screen flashed green. Access granted.

I navigated directly to the core database architecture. The lifeblood of the entire company. Every user profile, every proprietary algorithm, every financial record tied to the upcoming merger.

Julian wanted Serena to evaluate the architecture. He wanted to push me out of the company I built in the dark.

I typed a new sequence. Disable auto-backup protocol.

The system asked for confirmation. I tapped the screen once.

A small loading bar appeared. It reached one hundred percent in less than two seconds.

The automatic safety net was gone. If the servers crashed now, nothing would save the data.

I wasn't finished. I opened a second command window.

Execute protocol Eclipse.

This was the kill switch. The backdoor I coded three years ago when Julian first started hiding his phone screen from me. I never thought I would actually use it. I thought it was a paranoid failsafe.

I pressed enter.

The black screen shifted.

A flashing red countdown appeared in the center of the display: Core data destruction protocol will automatically initiate in 72 hours.
