Chapter 3

"Evelyn, stop playing games," I shouted, dropping my leather briefcase onto the hardwood floor.

The heavy oak front door slammed shut behind me. Silence answered. The massive foyer felt completely hollow, stripped of the usual hum of evening television or the clinking of dinner plates.

My gaze swept the entryway and snagged on the marble shoe cabinet.

A single brass key sat on the polished stone.

"Evelyn!" I yelled again, my voice bouncing off the high ceilings.

I marched down the hallway, my dress shoes thudding against the floorboards. She was throwing another tantrum. She wanted me to beg, to apologize for missing her minor surgery, to coddle her. I pushed the master bedroom door wide open, fully expecting to find her packing a bag for a dramatic weekend at a hotel.

The room was completely empty.

I stepped inside. The closet doors stood wide open. Her single black suitcase was missing from the corner.

My jaw tightened. I walked over to the bed. A neat stack of crisp white papers rested squarely in the center of my pillow.

I snatched the top page. The bold legal header glared up at me.

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

A heavy silver object rolled off the document, hitting the floor with a sharp clink. I stared down at her three-carat diamond wedding ring lying abandoned near the baseboard.

"You've got to be kidding me," I muttered.

I flipped to the second page. A property deed. My eyes scanned the dense legal jargon, stopping dead at the bolded text near the bottom. Revocation of Living Trust.

She had stripped Leo's name from the house. She had transferred the two-million-dollar asset entirely back into her own name.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Arthur Thorne. Her lawyer answered on the second ring.

"Arthur," I barked into the receiver. "What the hell kind of stunt are you pulling with my wife?"

"I advise you to lower your voice, Ethan," Arthur replied, his tone entirely clinical. "I represent Evelyn, not you."

"She left a fake property deed on my bed. You can't legally remove Leo from the trust without my consent."

"The initial funds for the property were entirely pre-marital assets belonging to Evelyn," Arthur stated. "She retained the sole right of revocation. The deed transfer was filed with the county clerk at noon today. It is entirely legal."

"She is having a mental breakdown!" I shouted, pacing across the bedroom. "She just had surgery. A judge will toss this out in a second."

"She underwent a highly successful excision and passed a full psychological evaluation before discharge," Arthur countered. "You will receive the formal divorce summons by courier tomorrow morning. Do not contact my client directly."

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone screen. My chest heaved. I dialed Leo. He answered on the first ring, the sound of classical piano music filtering through the speaker.

"Dad, where are you?" Leo whispered harshly. "Chloe is about to go on for her solo."

"Is your mother with you?" I demanded.

"No. Why would she be here?"

"She left her ring on my pillow. She packed a bag."

Leo scoffed. "She's just trying to ruin the night. Ignore her. Aunt Sue saved you a seat in the front row."

"She revoked your trust, Leo. She took your name off the deed to the house."

The piano music in the background seemed to fade. "What do you mean she took my name off? She can't do that."

"She already did. The lawyer's signature is right here."

"Call her attorney!" Leo's voice cracked, rising in pitch. "Tell him to fix it!"

"I will handle it," I said, a strange, heavy knot forming in my stomach. "Stay with Sue."

I hung up the phone. I stared at the cold diamond ring on the floor. She wouldn't actually leave. She had nowhere to go.

Three years after Evelyn walked out that door, I stood in the ruins of the empire she helped me build.

My fingers gripped the edge of a glossy, brightly colored flyer.

REWARD: $1,000,000 for information leading to the discovery of Evelyn Caldwell.

My thumb rubbed the edge of the paper, smudging the black ink. I placed the flyer down on my mahogany desk, right next to a copy of the New York Chronicle. The date printed across the top of the newspaper read October fourth.

Her birthday.

My office looked like a disaster zone. Stacks of unpaid invoices covered every available surface. Empty coffee cups lined the windowsills, staining the wood. Caldwell Enterprises was hemorrhaging cash. The credit lines were entirely maxed out, the accounts frozen.

The heavy oak door swung inward. My assistant, Clara, stepped into the room, clutching a tablet tight to her chest.

"Mr. Caldwell, the representative from the acquisition firm just arrived in the lobby," Clara announced, her voice trembling slightly. "They are coming up the private elevator right now."

"Did they give a name?" I asked, shoving the missing person flyer into my top drawer and slamming it shut.

"No, sir. The non-disclosure agreement is ironclad. The front desk only confirmed the representative has the final signing authority."

"Are the financial disclosures ready?"

"Printed and bound," Clara said, stepping up to the desk. "But the legal team flagged our debt ratio again. The buyer's auditors will tear those numbers apart."

"Let me handle the auditors. Just smile, offer them water, and keep your mouth shut about the frozen accounts."

"The board is threatening a vote of no confidence," Clara added, her hands shaking slightly as she held the tablet. "If we don't secure this capital injection today, they plan to oust you by Monday."

"The board doesn't have the votes," I snapped.

"They do, sir. Marcus and David flipped yesterday. They saw the quarterly losses from the overseas expansion."

"Those losses are temporary." I ground my teeth together. "Once the new supply chain is established, the margins will correct themselves."

"We don't have the cash to establish the supply chain," Clara reminded me. "The acquisition firm is offering fifty million for a sixty percent stake. It is our only lifeline."

"Sixty percent means I lose controlling interest."

"Sixty percent means the doors stay open."

"I know the stakes, Clara." I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror mounted near the bookshelf. "I built this company from nothing. I am not losing it to a margin call."

"Yes, sir."

I straightened my posture. I pulled my navy tie taut against my collar, smoothing the wrinkles from my suit jacket. I forced my shoulders back. I needed to project absolute confidence. The buyer could not smell desperation.

"Bring them straight in," I ordered.

Clara nodded and hurried back out into the corridor.

I walked back to my desk. I rested my knuckles on the cool wood, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Three years of bad investments. Three years of pouring money into Sue's failing boutique and Leo's legal troubles. The millions Evelyn left behind had vanished faster than I ever thought possible.

The digital clock on my computer monitor flipped to 2:00 PM.

The double doors to my office pushed wide open.

The sharp staccato of stilettos echoed against the polished marble floor of the reception area, growing louder as the buyer approached.

The footsteps halted exactly at the threshold of my office.

I forced a polite, winning smile onto my face and looked toward the doorway.

"Welcome to Caldwell Enterprises," I said smoothly. "I am Ethan Caldwell."

The figure did not step forward.

My gaze dropped to the floor, tracking the sharp lines of a tailored black suit down to the sleek designer heels.

My eyes locked on the woman's right ankle.

A jagged, crescent-shaped scar rested just above the leather strap of her shoe.
