Chapter 2

At eight the next morning, I sat across from Evelyn Croft in a conference room overlooking Park Avenue.

She was in her fifties, silver-haired, immaculate, and already familiar with every public detail of my marriage. The private ones sat in a folder between us.

"New York does not reward vengeance," she said, turning the photograph from the theater toward the light. "Adultery alone will not win you the company."

"I'm not asking for a reward. I'm asking for an accounting."

"That," she said, "is much more useful."

I slid a list across the table: account numbers, property addresses, corporate entities, and the name of a Cayman holding company Daniel had mentioned once after too much bourbon.

Evelyn read the first page and looked up. "How do you know where all of this is?"

"I built Davis Innovations with him. It started as a property analytics platform in our one-bedroom apartment. I handled branding, investor relations, and crisis management until Daniel decided a founder's wife looked better at charity galas than in executive meetings."

"Do you still hold shares?"

"A minority block in trust. He diluted the rest during the Series C round."

"Without your informed consent?"

"With documents he told me were routine marital planning."

Her expression cooled. "Then we begin with discovery, not drama. I can seek a temporary restraining order against unusual transfers if we show a credible risk of dissipation. I cannot freeze a public company's operating accounts because your husband cheated."

"He moved two million dollars offshore last month."

Marcus, seated beside me, pushed a printed corporate filing across the table. "The transfer came from a subsidiary Daniel controls. It was booked as consulting expense. The consultant has no employees and shares an address with a registered agent in George Town."

Evelyn tapped the paper once. "That may be enough for an emergency application preserving marital assets and your trust shares. It may also interest federal regulators."

"File it," I said.

She turned to another statement. "There's an eighty-thousand-dollar deposit from a Manhattan estate jeweler five years ago."

My grandmother's diamond ring had been the only valuable thing she left me. I remembered Daniel sitting on the floor of our old apartment, terrified he would miss payroll. I had sold the ring the next morning.

"That money kept the company alive," I said.

Marcus opened his laptop. "I found an email Daniel sent the board that week. He called it a bridge loan from Claire Hart and promised repayment after the next financing round."

For the first time, Evelyn smiled. "That is better than a promissory note. We will claim repayment with the interest stated in the email."

"He wrote an interest rate?"

"Eight percent," Marcus said. "Apparently he was more honest when he was desperate."

I signed the petition, the preservation request, and a limited authorization allowing Evelyn's forensic accountant to trace marital funds. By nine-thirty, the case had a docket number.

By noon, I was in the master bedroom of our Westchester house, packing.

I did not destroy anything. I left Daniel's suits hanging by color, his watches arranged in their velvet drawer, and our wedding portrait untouched on the nightstand. I removed only what belonged to me: clothes, jewelry, business records, family photographs, and the small cedar box containing my grandmother's letters.

My phone rang while I emptied the bathroom cabinet.

"The judge granted a temporary order," Evelyn said. "Daniel cannot transfer, encumber, or conceal marital assets outside ordinary business. His personal brokerage account has been flagged for review, and the Cayman transfer is preserved pending disclosure."

"When will he know?"

"His counsel will receive notice today. The bank may alert him sooner."

"Good."

"Claire, do not provoke him. Photograph the condition of the house before you leave. Keep the security system active."

I documented every room, then sent the files to a secure folder. Before leaving, I also photographed the wine cellar, the art inventory, and the locked cabinet in Daniel's study. Evelyn had warned me that valuable objects developed a habit of disappearing once a high-asset divorce began. I left the keys with the house manager and obtained a written receipt, removing one more opportunity for Daniel to accuse me of taking what was not mine.

In the kitchen, an Instagram notification appeared. Sophie had liked a photograph I posted the previous week. Her newest image filled my screen.

She stood in front of a coffee shop window, smiling into the snow. My gray scarf wrapped her throat.

Winter wrapped in warmth, the caption read.

I took a screenshot and forwarded it to Evelyn.

She called immediately. "Please tell me that is the assistant."

"It is. The scarf was made for Daniel."

"Keep the image, but understand its value. It supports the timeline and may help identify gifts purchased with company funds. It will not decide custody or property because there are no children and New York is no-fault."

"Then subpoena the corporate cards. Daniel's affair was not funded with sentiment."

"Already on the list."

At six, I loaded the last suitcase into my Mercedes. A message from Daniel arrived.

Landed at JFK. Exhausted. Can't wait to come home and hold you.

I read it twice, amazed by the ease of the lie.

Inside the dark foyer, I removed my platinum wedding band. The engraved date on the inner rim caught against my skin for a second before the ring slid free.

I set it in the center of the marble console table.

No note. No explanation. He had already received both.

I locked the door behind me and drove down the sloping driveway. At the gate, headlights turned onto the street.

Daniel's Range Rover approached from the opposite direction.

The lane narrowed between snowbanks. He slowed to let me pass and raised one hand in an absent wave, never recognizing my car behind the tinted glass.

For ten years, I had made myself visible whenever he entered a room.

This time, I drove past without lifting a hand.

In my rearview mirror, his taillights disappeared through the gate. A moment later, the security app chimed to tell me the front door had opened.

I kept driving toward Manhattan.
