Chapter 2

I remembered the prenuptial agreement we signed before our wedding, and I felt relieved.

I retreated to the side, remaining on standby as I observed Hugo.

Even after my reminder, his behavior did not change in the slightest. In fact, he and his crew got even more impolite.

Soon, the entire dining hall was filled with nothing but the loud, shameless chatter of the four of them.

Many guests could no longer take the noise and left for other decks.

Suddenly, Hugo looked around as if he were looking for someone. Our eyes met.

When he saw me, he smirked maliciously before pointing at me and yelling, "Hey, you! Come over here!"

I did not like him, so I ignored him.

However, he strode over to me and sat down in front of me, leaning back and crossing his legs.

"You! Kneel and hold the tray for me. I want to eat. The table is too low. It makes me uncomfortable eating."

A smile plastered on my face.

His other two men started chiming in rudely, saying, "Hugo, that's amazing! You picked such a beautiful one!"

"Hugo, my table feels short, too. Can I also…" He let out a lewd smile.

Hugo beamed triumphantly and replied, "Of course. There are a few others there, right? Get them over here!"

Those two actually began eyeing the female attendants in the restaurant, crowding together and commenting without restraint.

I stared at them coldly.

"We don't have such services here."

Hugo stopped smiling. He got up and kicked the table.

"What the hell do you mean by that, huh? You're dead set on going against me today?!"

Then, he pulled out the card once more and tapped it on my head twice, rudely.

"Open your stupid eyes and have a look. Do you see what this is? As long as I'm here, I'm the law! Who cares about what you think! If you offend me, you're done for!"

He then said, "Unless you kneel right now and apologize. Prostrate yourself to me and tell me what you've done wrong. Then, maybe I'll be generous and let you off the hook."

Hugo adjusted his collar in mock elegance, staring at me with blatant mockery.

Watching him continue to humiliate the staff there with that card, I finally could not take it any longer. I sneered coldly.

"Sir, is this really your card? You dare to pretend it's yours and bully other people with it?"

Hugo naturally knew where he got the card from. He just did not expect someone else to openly question him.

Humiliation turned into rage. He threw a punch at me.

His two other men knowingly went over and pressed me down, trying to force me to kneel.

One even touched me inappropriately.

I tried to shrug them off, but I was no match for two adult men.

"Let me go! Security!" I looked around nervously to see that the security guards nearby were looking away.

They did not dare to interfere, so they pretended that they saw nothing.

My heart sank.

Hugo got even more emboldened by their reactions. "Yell all you want! Let's see who dares to come and help you!"

The other two chimed in and yelled at the security guards, "Smart that you know not to interfere! This guy here is the Fuller Group's CEO's brother-in-law!"

They then kicked me in my knee. "Kneel and apologize to Hugo at once!"

My knees hit the ground hard. A sharp pain shot through me as if my bones had cracked.

Yet, I was refusing to yield.

"Hugo Church, you'll regret this!"

Half a month into our cold war, I, Claire Parker, found an abortion procedure slip tucked inside Daniel Carter's suit pocket. The patient's name belonged to the fragile little childhood sweetheart he had always protected so fiercely-Sophie Bennett. I folded the paper calmly and slipped it back where I had found it. Daniel noticed the movement immediately. His eyes flicked toward me through the rearview mirror, resignation coloring his voice. "What are you overthinking now? Sophie was just keeping a friend company at the hospital. She accidentally left it there." I turned toward the window and said nothing. This was Sophie declaring war on me, yet the man who could crush competitors without mercy in the business world believed her completely. The silence inside the car grew suffocating until Daniel finally stopped outside an upscale jewelry boutique. He reached over and ruffled my hair with easy familiarity, his tone indulgent and affectionate. "Come on. Pick out a ring. Your birthday's next month anyway, so we might as well register our marriage too." I bit down hard on my lip as tears fell soundlessly onto the back of my hand. What he still didn't know was that I wouldn't live long enough to see next month.

He left me for a waitress named Lola. The humiliation was suffocating. The elite of the Five Families looked at me with pity, a Genovese princess rejected for trash. When Silas finally returned, he didn't apologize. He showed up with hickeys on his neck, clinging to Lola, and had the audacity to suggest I become his mistress. He even demanded I hand over my dowry—millions in weapons and cash—so he could fund their lifestyle and "redecorate" with her. He thought I was still the innocent girl who would beg for his scraps. He didn't realize that in the moment he ran, a shadow had stepped forward to fill the void. Dante Moretti. The Don. Silas's uncle.
