Chapter 2

Leandro arrived in a dark suit, rain still beading on his shoulders. He didn't knock. Carmen had given him clearance after one phone call—something about the way he spoke made people move aside. He closed the door behind him and pulled a chair to my bedside without a word.

I told him everything. The wire transfer. The messages. The London tickets. Gloria's name on the shell account. My voice stayed level the whole time, like I was reading someone else's autopsy report. He listened without moving, his dark eyes fixed on mine, and I watched something shift behind them—something cold and precise clicking into place.

When I finished, the silence stretched between us. Then he reached over and took my hand. His palm was warm against my cold fingers.

'I'm not going to let him take anything else from you,' he said quietly. 'Not one more thing.'

I believed him. Not the way I'd believed Trenton—not with blind faith and soft edges. I believed him the way you believe in gravity.

He left at midnight. I watched the door close and felt something unfamiliar settle in my chest. Not hope exactly. Something steadier.

The next morning, my phone buzzed with a text. *Team assembled. Meeting at my office tonight. You focus on getting stronger. I'll handle the rest.*

I stared at the message for a long time. Then I deleted it and went back to reviewing the meal plan Carmen had left on my bedside table. When Trenton arrived an hour later with coffee and a smile, I smiled back.

'How are you feeling?' he asked, settling into the chair Leandro had occupied the night before.

'Tired,' I said. 'But okay.'

He kissed my forehead. His cologne made my stomach turn. I breathed through my mouth and kept smiling.

That evening, Leandro stood at the head of a glass conference table in his downtown office, four people seated around him. I wasn't there—he'd insisted I stay at the hospital, maintain the routine—but he told me later what he'd said.

'This is a covert operation,' he began, his voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. 'Raya Torres maintains her cover as the unsuspecting wife. No one moves until the evidence file is airtight and the federal angle is secured. We do this once, and we do it perfectly.'

He pointed to a woman with sharp eyes and silver-streaked hair. 'Elena handles the financial forensics. I want every transaction mapped, every account traced, every timestamp documented.'

The woman nodded once.

He turned to a younger man with a laptop open in front of him. 'Marcus—' He paused, then corrected himself. 'David. You're on communications. Phone records, message logs, metadata. Everything Trenton Allen has sent or received for the last three years.'

The man's fingers were already moving across the keyboard.

Leandro's gaze shifted to an older man in a rumpled jacket, seated at the far end of the table. 'Roy. You're lead investigator. Former FBI, Miami contacts, which is exactly what we need. I want you on the ground by tomorrow morning. Find the broker. Find the donor. Find every person who touched this money.'

Roy leaned back in his chair, arms crossed. 'Black-market organ trade is federal. You know that.'

'I'm counting on it,' Leandro said.

The fourth person at the table was a younger woman with a legal pad covered in notes. Leandro's associate, Clara. She looked up. 'What's our timeline?'

'Trenton has tickets to London for Wednesday,' Leandro said. 'That gives us six days. We move before he does.'

Roy left for Miami at dawn. By noon, he'd made contact with a source inside the transplant coordination network—a nurse who'd flagged suspicious activity months earlier and been ignored. By evening, he had a name: Victor Salinas.

Salinas operated out of a medical supply warehouse in Coral Gables. Roy didn't approach him directly. He didn't need to. He traced the financial thread backward, following the $500,000 through two shell companies and a cryptocurrency exchange before it landed in Salinas's offshore account. The paper trail was clean. Almost.

Roy found the crack in a phone record—a twelve-minute call between Gloria Robinson and Trenton Allen the night before the wire transfer. He pulled the cell tower data. Gloria had been at Trenton's apartment. They'd been together when the plan was finalized.

He sent the file to Leandro at 11 p.m. Leandro opened it in his office, the city lights of Seattle spread out behind him. He read every page twice. Then he picked up his phone and called me.

'We have it,' he said.

I was lying in my hospital bed, staring at the ceiling. 'All of it?'

'All of it. The broker. The donor family. Gloria's involvement. The federal charges.'

I closed my eyes. 'What happens now?'

'Now?' His voice softened, just slightly. 'Now you rest. And I build the trap.'

I heard something in his tone I couldn't name. Something that made my chest tighten.

'Leandro?'

'Yeah?'

'Thank you.'

There was a pause. Then: 'You don't have to thank me, Raya. You never did.'

The line went quiet, but neither of us hung up. I listened to him breathe on the other end, steady and sure, and for the first time in weeks, I fell asleep without crying.
