My Husband Cast His First Love as Me—So I Took Back the Film He Stole

Marcus didn't just hand his first love my screenplay—he handed her my life: my mother's words, my miscarriage, eight years of pages written under his name. When he orders me to keep rewriting for Serena, I cut him off from the novel registered only to me and ally with his fiercest rival, Julian Cross. Julian can stop the film and put me in the director's chair, but his studio profited from a missing page of my work, making trust a dangerous gamble in this mystery-tinged romance.

Chapter 2

I pushed away from the table, the speech still clutched in my hand like a shield I no longer needed. The screening room had gone quiet after the trailer played, the crew members exchanging uneasy glances as they packed up their notes. Marcus had stood there, trying to recover the momentum, but I turned on my heel and headed straight for the restroom. The cool tile floor felt good under my shoes, grounding me while the anger simmered low in my chest.

Marcus caught up fast, his footsteps echoing behind me as he stepped into the small room. He closed the door with a soft click that cut off the hallway noise. His eyes met mine in the mirror above the sink, but I kept my focus on the faucet, turning it on just to have something to do with my hands.

"Clara," he said, his voice steady but edged with that familiar control, "I need you to listen. Serena and I have reconciled. It happened last week, and we've been working through it. The miscarriage scene has to be more real tonight, though. You have to adjust it so it lands harder in the trailer."

He took a step closer, close enough that I could smell the faint trace of his cologne mixed with the faint tension in the air. "Marriage is one thing, Clara. Work comes first. It can't be dragged down by your emotions. The team can't see you like this."

Serena appeared in the doorway without knocking, her posture relaxed like she had been waiting outside. She slipped inside, closing the door behind her with a gentle push. The three of us stood there in the small space, the overhead light buzzing overhead, casting shadows that made everything feel smaller.

"Clara," she began, her tone light and measured, as if we were simply discussing notes from a previous project, "what was your most painful expression when it happened? Just for the performance details. As an advisor, you know best."

The words hung between us, sharp and deliberate. She was using me, pulling details from me like I was some kind of script consultant, nothing more. My fingers tightened around the annotated manuscript on the counter, the pages crinkling under my grip.

I flipped it open, my nails scraping against the cover as I tore out the page with my notes. The sound was sharp in the small room. Without another word, I closed the book and slid it toward the edge of the counter, away from both of them.

"If she's playing me, she can write my pages," I said, my voice even and clear.

Marcus let out a low, cold laugh that didn't reach his eyes. He shook his head, the sound cutting through the tension like a blade. "No production company will believe a never-signed wife who propped up my whole career. You've always been just a placeholder, Clara. And that ends tonight."

The words landed heavy, final. He turned and left without another glance, the door clicking shut behind him. I stayed in the restroom for a long minute, the faucet still running, the cold water splashing over my wrist as I tried to steady myself.

Later that night, the house was quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. I had driven home after the screening room, the streets dark and empty around me, but sleep had been impossible. The rejection letter from eight years ago sat on the desk in front of me, yellowed at the edges, its original envelope tucked beneath it.

I grabbed my keys and headed out again, the engine of my car growling to life as I headed across town to Julian Cross's office. His building loomed ahead, the windows dark except for one light on the second floor. I parked in the lot and took the stairs two at a time, my heart pounding with a mix of resolve and something sharper.

Julian looked up when I stepped into his office, his desk lamp casting a warm glow over scattered papers. He stood, his expression shifting from surprise to concern as he took in my face.

"Clara, what brings you here so late?" he asked, his voice careful.

I handed him the letter without speaking. "This is the rejection letter from eight years ago."

He scanned the words and let out a slow breath. "I didn't reject you. I tried to hire you."

Julian reached into his drawer and pulled out a copy of the old job offer letter, placing it right beside the rejection. The two documents sat side by side on the desk, their dates identical but one clearly forged. My pulse quickened as the pieces clicked into place. Marcus had stolen the collaboration opportunity the moment I submitted my work, then forged this letter to keep me from ever following through. It had been the exact starting point for me turning away from public submissions, choosing instead to write everything anonymously for him, hiding my name behind his success.

Julian didn't offer any opinion. He simply slid both letters back across the desk toward me, his hands steady but his eyes unreadable.

I picked them up, the paper crisp in my fingers as I stared at the two now. The realization hit me hard: Marcus had not only taken my words but had personally blocked my first door out of his name, sealing it shut with his own hands from the very beginning.

The two letters felt heavier than they had any right to be, the proof of everything he had stolen sitting there between us. I turned and walked out of the office without saying goodbye, the hallway stretching long and quiet ahead of me.
