Stolen Empire, Stolen Child, Stolen Life

Stolen Empire, Stolen Child, Stolen Life

I was pregnant, the creative force behind a culinary empire I was building with my husband, Donovan. My best friend, Jazmine, was our closest confidante, the one I' d held through detox. Then I found the hidden folder on his server. A revised partnership agreement transferred my entire life's work-my recipes, my concepts, all future profits-to Jazmine. My name was erased. But the betrayal was far more sinister. I found their emails and audio recordings. Jazmine was infertile, and I was their "incubator," a surrogate they planned to discard. They had a plan to declare me mentally unstable after the birth, take my baby, and even discussed arranging a "tragic accident" to get me out of the picture for good. My husband and my best friend didn't just want my career; they wanted my child and my life. So I gave them a death. I burned my old life to the ground and disappeared, faking my own funeral to save my baby.

Chapter 5

Audrey's POV: The doorbell chimed, a jarring sound in the quiet of my new apartment. My heart leaped into my throat. No one knew I lived here. I peered through the peephole, and my blood ran cold. Jazmine. Standing on my doorstep, a sickly sweet smile plastered on her face, a bouquet of lilies clutched in her hand. I opened the door a crack, my body tensed, ready to slam it shut. "What do you want, Jazmine?" My voice was flat, devoid of its usual warmth. She pushed against the door, forcing it open. "Audrey, darling! Is that any way to greet your best friend?" She stepped inside, her eyes scanning my modest living room with a thinly veiled sneer. "Oh, you poor thing. How could Donovan let you live in such... squalor?" "Don't pretend to care," I cut her off, my voice sharp. "I know why you're here. Donovan found me. What, did he send his little lapdog to finish the job?" Her smile faltered, replaced by a practiced look of hurt. "Audrey, that's unfair! I've been so worried about you. And the baby. Donovan is beside himself. He just wants you to come home. He wants to be a family." She moved closer, her hand reaching out to touch my arm. I recoiled as if burned. "Don't touch me. And don't you dare mention 'family.' Not after what you two did. Not after I heard your vile voice message, gloating about stealing my child, about me being nothing more than a surrogate." Jazmine's eyes widened, a flicker of genuine surprise in their depths before she quickly masked it. "Voice message? I... I don't know what you're talking about! That must be a misunderstanding, a cruel trick! Audrey, you know I've always wanted children. It's been my greatest sorrow that I can't have them." Her voice broke, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek. A performance. My stomach churned. "Don't bother with the crocodile tears, Jazmine. I'm not buying it. What is it, exactly, that you want from me now? My uterus is still functional, if that' s your main concern." Her composure cracked. Her eyes narrowed, a flash of pure venom escaping. "How could you be so cruel? I'm infertile, Audrey! I can't carry a child! You were the only one who could give Donovan a family, give us a family!" The words tumbled out, raw and unfiltered, stripping away her facade. In that moment, the puzzle pieces clicked into place, forming a horrifying picture. The hidden folder, the revised agreements, the legal maneuvers, the calculated neglect, the fake pregnancy bump, the taunting voice message-it all made sickening sense. She hadn't just been in love with Donovan; she had been desperate for a child. And I, in my naive trust, had been the unwitting vehicle for their twisted desires. I was just a biological container, a means to an end, a surrogate for her barren womb. The realization hit me with a force that stole my breath. It wasn't just my career they wanted, or my husband. They wanted my child. They wanted to erase my motherhood, to steal the very essence of my being. A wave of profound disgust washed over me, so potent it made me gag. I wasn' t just betrayed; I was defiled. My gaze fell on the lilies she held. Beautiful, pristine, deadly. With a guttural cry, a sound that was half sob, half roar, I snatched the bouquet from her hands and smashed it against the wall. The petals exploded, scattering across the floor, leaving streaks of pollen like fresh wounds. The vase shattered, glass shards tinkling like malevolent laughter. Jazmine gasped, her eyes wide with genuine fear now. She scrambled backward, almost tripping over her designer shoes. "Audrey! What are you doing? You're insane!" "Get out!" I screamed, my voice raw, broken. "Get out of my house! Get out of my life! You and Donovan, you're both monsters! You will never touch my child!" She stumbled back, terror now fully etched on her face. "You'll regret this, Audrey! Donovan will make you pay! He'll take your child, and you'll rot in some asylum, just like he said you would!" She turned and fled, her heels clattering frantically down the hallway. I collapsed against the door, my body shaking, tears streaming down my face. Her last words echoed in my ears: "He'll take your child." Donovan's power, Jazmine's malice-they were overwhelming. I couldn't fight them. Not conventionally. My hand went to my belly, a desperate plea for protection. My precious baby. My resolve solidified. I would not let them win. I would not let them take my child. For my baby, I would go to the ends of the earth. I would disappear so completely, so irrevocably, that even Donovan's vast resources would never find me. I would execute the radical plan. I would die.
