Still a Blessing When I Start Over
Chapter 8
The day before the emotion transplant surgery, Jenna went to the hospital for a compulsory physical examination to confirm that she was healthy before the research institute carried out the operation. "Doctor, may I ask if my body is strong enough to undergo this transplant?"
She breathed a sigh of relief when she received a positive answer. Now that everything was ready, she only needed the final push. She came out clutching the report and had just reached the corner of the hallway when she coincidentally heard Matthew's name.
"Matt, feel it. Our baby is in here. Are you happy?" Luna asked.
Jenna froze in place.
Not far away, Matthew was helping Luna, whose belly was slightly protruding, out of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Jenna saw Matthew carefully helping Luna like she was a treasure, and his face was full of joy as a new father.
'Luna is pregnant? They're having a baby?' Jenna pondered as she hid in the corner. Her heart was in so much pain that she was having trouble breathing. She picked up her phone and called Matthew. She watched Matthew kiss Luna on the lips before stepping aside to answer the phone.
"Hello? Jenna, I'm at work right now. I forgot to tell you because I have an emergency to attend to. I'll be home to accompany you as soon as I can. I'll buy you your favorite dessert on my way back—"
Jenna interrupted him and muttered, "Matthew, look back. I'm right behind you."
That moment felt as if a knife was stabbed into Matthew's back. Jenna watched as his back straightened instantly, and he froze in place.
It took a long time before Matthew turned around while trembling.
Behind him, people were coming and going in the corridor while Jenna just stood there, looking at him coldly.
Jenna eyed him, thinking that he looked as though he had just been struck by lightning. After a long while, she chuckled softly. "What's with that expression?"
Matthew paused for a moment before quickly changing his expression to nervousness and worry. "Jenna, why are you in the hospital? Are you feeling unwell or injured?"
He grabbed her arms, looking utterly anxious. "Let me see. Jenna, what's wrong with you?" He looked her up and down, his eyes full of anxious concern as if he had not just lied to her.
Jenna smiled in self-mockery. "I just had a medical examination."
He did not believe it, so she took out the medical examination report from her bag and handed it to him. Judging from the data, there was nothing seriously wrong with her health. Matthew read the report carefully a couple of times and stared at the line—'All physical indicators meet the surgical requirements' before asking her, "Jenna, what does this mean? What surgery are you having? Do you feel uncomfortable?"
Instead of answering him, Jenna calmly asked, "Didn't you say you were at work? Why are you here with Luna?"
Panic rose in Matthew's eyes. His Adam's apple rolled, but he stammered, unable to say a word.
Luna walked over. "Mrs. Simmons, don't blame Mr. Simmons. I'm pregnant, but my boyfriend can't take responsibility for me for now..." Her eyes reddened as if she had suffered a great injustice as she continued, "I didn't want anyone else to know, so I begged Mr. Simmons to keep it a secret for me. He didn't mean to lie to you."
'For now?' Jenna wondered.
It seemed that Luna was confident that she would end up marrying Matthew.
Jenna looked at Matthew's tense face and laughed sarcastically in her heart, but she did not show it on her face. "Is what she said true?"
He quickly nodded. "Of course. Jenna, you know I'd never lie to you in any other circumstances."
Jenna looked down, finding it more ironic. He had told her so many lies.
"Let's go home, then," Jenna said indifferently. She could not be bothered to expose him at this point.
