Chapter 2

I woke up to the sound of machines beeping and the sharp, sterile smell of antiseptic. My head felt heavy, like it was filled with fog. For a few seconds, I didn’t remember what had happened. Then it all came crashing in, along with the excruciating pain.

It was everywhere, but especially in my legs.

A low, throbbing ache pulsed through them, mixed with sharp stabs that made me want to scream. I tried to move them, but nothing happened. Panic rose fast in my chest. I pushed myself up on my elbows, ignoring the pull of the IV in my arm, and stared down at the white hospital blanket covering my lower body.

I couldn’t feel my feet.

“Elena.”

Leo’s voice came from beside me. He was sitting in a chair right next to the bed, looking exhausted. His eyes were red, and there was stubble along his jaw. He looked like he hadn’t slept at all.

I turned to him, my throat tight. “My legs… I can’t feel them.”

He reached for my hand immediately, holding it carefully between both of his. “You were in an accident, baby. The doctors had to do emergency surgery. There was swelling around your spine. They said the next few days are critical.”

I shook my head, tears already blurring my vision. “I can’t feel my legs, Leo. Why can’t I feel them?”

His grip on my hand tightened. “It’s going to be okay. You’re strong. You’ve always been strong. We’ll get through this together.”

But his words didn’t reach me. All I could think about was the studio. The way my body moved when I danced. The music. The feeling of freedom I only ever got when I was on stage. If I couldn’t feel my legs, what did that mean for dancing? What did that mean for me?

I started crying before I could stop myself. Deep, shaking sobs that made my chest hurt. Leo moved closer and tried to pull me into his arms, but I was too stiff with fear.

“I can’t lose this,” I whispered against his chest. “Dancing is all I have. It’s who I am. If I can’t dance anymore…”

“Don’t say that,” he said quickly, stroking my hair. “You’re going to be fine. The doctors are doing everything they can. Just focus on healing right now. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

I wanted to believe him. I really did. But something deep inside me already knew this was bad. The pain in my legs wasn’t normal.

Hours passed in a blur of nurses coming in and out, checking my vitals, adjusting my IV. Leo never left my side. He held my hand, wiped my tears when they fell, and kept telling me that everything would be okay. But every time I tried to move my legs and felt nothing, the fear grew heavier.

Later that evening, the door opened again.

Sophia walked in first, carrying a large bouquet of white flowers. Behind her came Alessandro and Don Marco. The entire family was here.

“Oh, Elena,” Sophia said, rushing to my bedside with a worried expression. She placed the flowers on the small table and took my free hand in hers. Her skin was cool and smooth. “You poor thing. We came as soon as we heard. How are you feeling, darling?”

I didn’t know how to answer. My throat felt tight. “I… I don’t know.”

She squeezed my hand gently, her eyes soft with what looked like genuine concern. “You’ve been through something terrible. But you’re in good hands here. Leo hasn’t left your side for even a minute. He’s been so worried about you.”

I glanced at Leo. He gave me a small, tired smile, but I could see the tension in his shoulders.

Alessandro stood near the foot of the bed with his usual cold expression. “The driver who hit you has been dealt with,” he said simply. “You don’t need to worry about anything except getting better.”

Don Marco cleared his throat from where he stood near the door, leaning on his cane. “You’re family, Elena. Whatever you need, the best doctors, private care, anything at all, you have it. We take care of our own.”

Sophia nodded, still holding my hand. “Exactly. You just focus on resting. Everything else will be handled.”

Her voice was gentle, almost motherly. But something about the way she looked at me made my skin crawl. There was a softness in her eyes that didn’t match the words she had said to me at the studio yesterday. Or maybe I was just imagining things because of the pain and the medication.

They stayed for a while, talking quietly among themselves. Sophia kept touching my arm and telling me how strong I was. I nodded when I was supposed to, but I could barely focus on their words. All I could think about was my legs. And dancing. And the terrifying possibility that both were gone.

After they left, the room felt too quiet.

Leo sat back down beside me and took my hand again. “See? Everyone’s here for you. You’re not alone in this.”

I looked at him, my eyes burning with fresh tears. “What if I can never dance again, Leo? What if I can never walk again? What am I supposed to do with my life?”

He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against mine. “Don’t think like that. We don’t know anything for sure yet. The doctors said we have to wait and see how the swelling goes down. You could still recover.”

“But what if I don’t?” My voice cracked. “What if this is it? What if I spent my whole life dancing just to lose it in one second?”

Leo didn’t have an answer for that. He just held my hand tighter and stayed quiet.

A little while later, there was a knock on the door.

The doctor walked in. He was the same doctor who had spoken to us earlier. He looked tired, and there was something heavy in his expression that made my stomach drop the moment I saw him.

Leo stood up immediately. “Doctor.”

Dr. Harlan nodded at him before turning to me. His eyes were kind but serious. “Mrs. Valenti, how are you feeling?”

I swallowed hard. “Scared.”

He pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down. Leo stayed standing beside me, still holding my hand.

“I won’t lie to you,” Dr. Harlan said gently. “The surgery went as well as we could have hoped. We relieved the pressure on your spinal cord. However, the damage is significant. There’s a very real chance that you may never regain full sensation or movement in your legs.”

My heart started pounding hard against my ribs.

“Even with intensive rehabilitation,” he continued, “walking again would be extremely difficult. And dancing…” He shook his head slowly. “I’m very sorry. At this stage, it would be unrealistic to expect you to return to professional dancing. The career you had… it’s likely over.”

The words hit me like another car crash.

I couldn’t breathe. The room seemed to tilt around me.

“No,” I whispered. Then louder, my voice breaking, “No. You’re wrong. I’m a dancer. That’s all I’ve ever been. You can’t just say that. You can’t…”

“Elena—” Leo tried to calm me, but I pulled my hand away from his.

“Get out,” I told the doctor, my voice shaking violently. “Please just get out.”

Dr. Harlan looked at me with pity in his eyes. He nodded once and quietly left the room.

The silence that followed was worse than anything.

I turned my face away from Leo and stared at the wall as the tears came hard and fast. My whole body shook with sobs. Everything I had worked for, everything I loved, had just been taken from me in one sentence.

Leo tried to touch my shoulder, but I flinched away.

I didn’t want comfort or any form of hope. All I wanted was my life back.
