Someone Else Became the Tragic Protagonist
Chapter 4
“Any form of organ trafficking is a serious criminal offense. Do you understand that this is a crime?”
I nodded. “I know it’s illegal, and even more so to conduct such transactions on an online platform that’s public.”
If it were not illegal, the system would not have told me to post it.
After looking more closely, Kris frowned. “I didn’t post that.”
He shot me a glance. He looked livid.
“Are you denying it?” The officer slammed the table impatiently.
“Take a look at this! Your company employees posted this on a forum last night. You openly ordered a doctor to draw someone else’s blood for Ruby Dynevor and even offered money to encourage people to donate blood. Do you know that’s illegal?”
Kris pursed his lips for a second before saying, “The transfusion didn’t happen in the end.”
The officer snorted and said, “You showed the intent to commit the act. It just didn’t go through.”
Just then, another officer escorted Ruby into the room.
Tears streamed down her face as she threw herself into Kris’ arms.
“Kris, are you okay? This is all my fault. If I weren’t sick, none of this would’ve happened.”
Behind her was the familiar female officer.
The moment she saw Kris and me, her face stiffened. “This case needs a thorough investigation. Their marital relationship presents complicating factors. We cannot treat this as a simple case of disturbing public order.”
Seeing that Kris was about to be handcuffed, Ruby panicked.
She stepped in front of the officers. “Kris didn’t commit any crime!”
As the officers tried to pull her away, she blurted out in panic, “I’m not sick! I don’t need a kidney transplant at all, so he couldn’t have actually been trying to buy organs.”
As soon as she said that, Kris shot to his feet.
“You’re not sick? When you left the country back then, you said it was because you were ill and that your family was forcing you to go for treatment—”
“I got better!” Realizing what she had said, Ruby hurried to explain.
“I was treated overseas. I’m completely cured now.”
Watching from the side, a cold detachment settled over me.
After learning that the Flynn family had gone bankrupt, Ruby had immediately gone abroad, using her illness as an excuse.
At that moment, anyone with eyes could see her excuse for what it really was.
Kris’ lawyer arrived. After negotiating, Kris was released after paying a fine.
On the way home, he was silent the entire time.
I sat in the front passenger seat. In the rearview mirror, I saw Ruby cautiously reach out and rest her hand over the back of his.
“Kris, I didn’t mean to hide it from you. My illness really was cured overseas. You can verify it if you want.”
Her eyes welled up again. “I lied because I wanted to see if you still cared about me. If you hate me for it, you can hit me.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I could never hit you.” Kris turned his hand over to clasp hers.
I turned my head away and ignored them.
The system issued another command in my head. [When you get out of the car, take Kris’ phone.]
I did not argue. It barely counted as theft.
In the rearview mirror, I saw Kris glance at his phone screen at Ruby’s prompting.
Then, he looked up and watched me in the passenger seat.
After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded.
The driver dropped Ruby off first, then turned toward our house.
When we got out of the car, I tapped Kris on the shoulder. “There’s a bug here.”
When he turned his head, my fingers slipped into his pocket and retrieved his phone.
He turned back to the driver and told him to send all the staff away for the day.
“My wife and I need to talk.”
I quickly glanced at the screen. The latest message was from Ruby.
[What happened today was definitely Simone’s doing. Kris, you have to teach her a lesson. Lock her in the house. Get some men to come and scare her.]
I understood at once. That was what Kris was nodding at.
The system asked me, [Do you know what to do this time?]
I nodded. After all the servants left, I followed Kris into the house.
He turned around and said, “I’m going out—”
I kicked him hard in the knee.
Before he could react, I darted out slammed the front door shut.
