Chapter 17

Thursday. Five fifty-eight a.m. The city not yet fully light.

Elara sat at the kitchen table already dressed, the keycard in her jacket pocket, her notes on the archive structure memorised the night before and the physical copies left in her room. If the system was being monitored, she needed nothing on her that could document what she was looking for or what she found.

Rowan came in at exactly six. She had begun to notice that he was almost never late, not from rigidity, she thought, but from the particular self-discipline of someone who considered unpunctuality a form of disrespect. He looked at her across the kitchen, took in that she was already dressed and positioned, and something settled in his expression. The acknowledgment of: we both understand what today is.

He made coffee. Set hers in front of her, two sugars, no milk, before his own cup was even poured. She had stopped commenting on that.

"Board session starts at nine," he said. "Room four. Gideon will be locked in there with the full strategy committee until at least one time. The two VPs who rotate in and out both have standing conflicts before noon." He sat down across from her. "That's your window."

"Four hours is more than I need."

"Take all four anyway. Don't rush it."

"I wasn't planning to." She wrapped both hands around her mug. "If the system generates any kind of access alert-"

"It won't. The card I, the access level on the card, sits two tiers below Gideon's notification threshold. He set the flag to catch standard observer requests. He didn't anticipate anyone getting access above observer level without going through official channels first."

He had started to say I and redirected. She noted it and said nothing.

"Maya is ready. If I find anything I can't remove, she can pull the records remotely once I give her the reference codes. She's built a secure channel for it."

"Good."

They drank their coffee. The kitchen was quiet with the particular fullness of a space containing two people who were both thinking very hard about the same thing.

"Elara."

She looked up.

He had put his cup down and was looking at her across the table with the expression that appeared when he had already decided to say something and was choosing whether to say all of it or only part of it.

"Is there anything you're not telling me?" he asked.

The question arrived like something physical in her chest. She thought about Maya's message. About C. Vaughn and eleven years and the account she hadn't told him about yet. She thought about her promise: When I have everything, I'll tell you everything.

"Not yet," she said. Steadily. Looking at him directly, because she owed him that. "But when I have the full picture, I'll bring it all to you. Every piece of it."

He studied her face. Thinking.

"Okay," he said.

The word sat there. And then, before she could stop herself:

"Is there anything you're not telling me?"

She hadn't planned to ask it. It came out the way things came out when you were not quite in control of your own mouth, which she had been, more or less, since she arrived, until recently, until the kitchen conversations and the midnight hours and the press statement, until a man had quietly begun to undo the armor she had built, and she had let him do it without noticing.

Rowan went very still.

The stillness lasted long enough that she wondered if she had pushed something that wasn't ready to be pushed. Then something moved in his eyes, complicated, brief, and he said:

"Not yet." Quietly. Precisely. "But when I do, I'll tell you everything."

Her own words. Given back to her exactly, with the same weight.

They were both carrying something. Both waiting for the right moment, the complete picture, the courage to say what they had promised to say. Both trusting the other just enough to stand at the edge of it and say: soon.

He stood. Picked up his jacket.

"Be careful in there," he said at the door.

"I will."

"I mean it."

"So do I."

He left. She sat in the kitchen for another minute after the sound of his footsteps faded. Picked up her bag. Stood up.

Not yet. But soon.

It felt, for the first time, like a beginning rather than a delay.

She walked out the door and went to find the truth.

The penthouse door closed. She stood in the kitchen for a moment, holding her empty mug.

She was a forensic accountant. She had spent her career reading documents about what they were actually saying beneath the surface of what they appeared to say. She was very good at it. She had been choosing, deliberately, not to apply that skill to this kitchen or to the man who had just walked out of it.

She was going to have to stop making that choice soon.

Not yet. After Thursday. Afterwards, she had the full picture and could say what she needed to say.

She picked up her bag.

Not yet. But soon.

She walked out the door.

She thought: in four months I have had approximately one hundred opportunities to walk away from this building with what I came for. I have not taken a single one.

She thought: that is either the best decision I have ever made or the worst one, and I am going to find out which when I finally say the thing I have been not saying.

She walked out the door.
