Chapter 13

She found Rowan in his study that evening with the door open, which was unusual enough that she knocked on the frame even though the open door was technically an invitation.

He looked up immediately. Registered her expression the way he registered everything, fast, fully, without making it visible. Put his pen down.

"What happened?"

She crossed the room and sat across from him without being invited. They were past that. "The flag on the archive system. The access denial I received."

"I pulled the creation log through the external audit team," he said. "I got the results this morning."

"I know. Sandra sent me a copy. I want to talk about what it means." She leaned forward slightly. "Gideon Hart set that flag. Three years ago. He used borrowed credentials, accessed the system through someone else's login, a different device, at a different time of day than his normal pattern. He made it untraceable through official channels, but the device location and the access timing match his footprint."

Rowan said nothing for a moment. "Yes."

"He built a wall around a specific document tier to make sure no one got through without generating an alert directly to him. Which means he knows what's in that section of the archive. Not suspected, you know. He's been managing the exposure for three years, making sure no one reaches it before he decides what to do with it." She paused. "Unless someone came looking without going through official channels."

"Like you," he said.

"Like me. And like you."

He didn't confirm or deny it. He looked at her with the even, measuring expression that she had learned to read as: you've found something I was already sitting on.

"I know you've had an external audit running for three months," she said. "I can see the access stamps in the document metadata. Dates, times, at which tiers were accessed. You've been looking at the same structure I have."

"Document metadata," he said. "Of course."

"So tell me what you found."

He opened the drawer on his left and slid a folder across the desk without a word. She opened it. His notes were handwritten in red pencil, meticulous, dated, the same shell company she had been tracing circled at the center of a diagram that mapped the payment structure. The earliest entry was fourteen weeks ago.

He had started this three months before she walked into his building with a proposal and an agenda.

She looked at the notes. Then at him. "Why didn't you tell me this at the beginning?"

"Because at the beginning I didn't know what you were here for," he said. Not unkindly. Simply. "You showed up eleven days after your father was arrested and asked me to marry you. I needed time to understand whether you were an asset or a complication."

"And now?"

"Now I know we've been running toward the same thing from opposite directions." He closed the folder. "Whether or not the thing we reach is the same."

She felt that sentence settle. He was right to qualify it. They might want different truths. The evidence might not deliver a clean result for both of them. She had been aware of that possibility since the account with her father's name had appeared in Maya's message, and sitting with it had not made it smaller.

"We need to get into the archive," she said.

"Yes."

"Not through official channels."

"No. Gideon will see it the moment we touch any system he's flagged." He leaned back in his chair, arms crossed loosely, thinking. "Thursday I have a board session. Gideon will be in room four from nine until at least one. Four uninterrupted hours."

"That's enough."

"Is your outside contact ready?"

She looked at him. He had known about Maya. Of course, he had. "Yes. She's been ready for a week."

He nodded. Then, after a pause: "I'll make sure the keycard in your file folder covers the access level you'll need."

She looked at the folder on his desk. At the red pencil circles. At the months of careful, quiet work that had been running parallel to hers in the same building without either of them knowing.

"Rowan," She stood. "Whatever we find in there, I'm going to bring it to you. All of it. Whatever it says about whoever. That's a promise."

He held her eyes across the desk. "Same."

One word. From this man, in this tone, it was as binding as a written agreement. More binding, maybe, because it had no exit clause.

She walked back to her wing and sat at her desk and thought about the account. About C. Vaughn. About the promise she had just made and the thing she was already carrying that contradicted the spirit of it even if not, technically, the letter.

She told herself she was waiting for the full picture. That when she had everything she would tell him everything. That promise still held.

She told herself that until she almost believed it.

She walked back to her wing slowly. She passed the kitchen, where their two cups from this morning were still on the counter, not yet cleared. The coffee dregs at the bottom of his cup were black. The dregs at the bottom of hers were the color of very sweet things.

She thought: four months ago, I walked into this building as an enemy. And now I am standing in the corridor thinking about coffee cups.

She told herself the only thing that mattered was Thursday. The archive. The truth.

She told herself that with complete conviction.
