Sight Unveils His Lies
Chapter 2
After clearing away the trash, Alejandro took my hand and led me back into the room. He warmed up some coffee and reminded me to get some sleep early.
"The client needs the proposal urgently tomorrow, so I'll be working late tonight," he explained. "I might come back too late and disturb your sleep, so I'll stay in the study tonight. Call me if you need anything."
His reasoning always seemed so flawless, appearing considerate at first glance. If I hadn't regained my sight and witnessed him exchanging flirtatious glances with Lakelynn, who was casually leaning against the door, I might have still felt sorry for his hard work.
Lakelynn was a former classmate of Alejandro’s from college who had become his assistant. She managed not only professional matters but also took care of his personal chores. Trusting in Alejandro and her abilities, I had always been grateful for her assistance. How laughable that seems now.
Suppressing the bitterness within me, I calmly agreed and closed the door. Sitting on the bed in a daze, I looked around. The style of our home, which I had personally designed, had changed dramatically, now filled with Lakelynn's preferred pastel tones and Victorian-style decor.
I took out my phone and scrolled through various updates on WhatsApp. Since losing my sight, they hadn't bothered to hide their activities from me. As I numbly browsed Lakelynn's past posts, I found countless photos of her and Alejandro, flaunting their affection.
On my birthday, they were sunbathing in the Bahamas. On anniversaries when Alejandro claimed he was working late, they were diving in the ocean. Even on my parents' memorial day, when Alejandro said he was on a business trip, he was actually taking her to ride the Ferris wheel and watch the sunrise.
Alejandro and I had been together for eight years, five of which I spent blind. The truth that he was also in love with Lakelynn during those five years hit me hard, jolting me out of my muddled emotions.
I glanced at the wedding ring I had designed myself, sitting on the bedside table, and laughed bitterly. Then, I dialed a familiar number overseas.
"Aunt Dior, I want to go abroad to continue my studies."
Her voice on the other end was filled with joy. “Hattie, you've finally made a decision. And your eyesight?”
“Yes, I can see now.” Somehow, my voice was choked with emotion.
Back then, blinded and struggling emotionally, I became overly reliant on Alejandro and couldn't leave his side. So, after graduating college, I put my plans for further study on hold and turned down Aunt Dior's suggestion to seek treatment abroad.
Hearing my response now, Aunt Dior was so excited that she rambled incoherently, “Your grandparents will be thrilled to hear this news…”
We agreed on the travel arrangements and hung up. The timing of my departure coincided exactly with our wedding day. Watching Aunt Dior bustling with plans in the family group chat, I realized I had been so preoccupied with someone like Alejandro that I had overlooked the people who truly loved me.
Thankfully, it's not too late.
Around midnight, the light in the study was still on. I tiptoed out of my room, smartphone in hand. Standing at the study door, I overheard their intimate conversation.
Lakelynn’s playful voice floated through, "Aren’t you afraid of getting caught, messing around like this at home?"
Alejandro laughed, “Not at all. The soundproofing here is good. Hattie can't hear, and besides, she’s blind and can’t see. Isn’t it thrilling to cheat right next door?”
Their voices were unrestrained, and I heard everything clearly from the doorway. Who would have thought reserved Alejandro could be so bold?
So, this is the man who professed love for me, vowing never to leave me, yet repeatedly carried on an affair with his assistant behind my back.
I suddenly realized I didn't need a man like this. Holding my phone against my chest, I switched on the recording. The next moment, I reached out and turned the doorknob.
To my surprise, it wasn’t locked, and it swung open easily.
A startled shout pierced the air, "Hattie, what’s gotten into you?!"
