Chapter 4

The second I saw the blood and mangled flesh inside, my mind just... blew out.

People passing by saw it and screamed.

"Oh my God... isn't that a fetus?"

My hand went rigid. It felt like my heart got crushed in someone's grip.

Everything went dark.

I dropped.

I didn't know how long I was out.

When I woke up, Helen was by my bed, flipping through reports. The second she saw my eyes open, she stood and handed me water.

"The day you were discharged, my car got stuck nearby. I came up as fast as I could... and saw you collapse."

She paused, then picked up a document from the bedside table and handed it to me. "While you were out, someone claiming to be your brother-in-law came by.

"He asked me to give you this. Said since the child is gone, his parents already found your wife a seventy-year-old widower. The man's offering a house and another fifty thousand in cash. Wedding's soon.

"He told you to sign so you don't hold up her remarriage—"

I didn't let her finish.

I took the papers and signed my name. No hesitation.

Helen just stared at me.

I met her eyes and gave a small, steady smile. "Ms. Hart, you asked if I'd transfer to headquarters in Borevia.

"My answer's yes."

Third-Person POV

Three days later, at the Sutton house.

Vanessa held her flat stomach. "Mom... I don't feel good after the procedure. Can you make me something—something nutritious—"

Jennifer cut her off. "Food, food, food. That's all you think about. The good stuff's for your brother. You're grown. Make yourself some toast."

Paul paced her room, smoking, irritation all over his face. "What's wrong with Wade? Darren already dropped off the divorce papers. He should be losing it by now—begging us, handing over the house. Why hasn't he shown up?"

"Maybe... making me end the pregnancy hurt him..." Vanessa's voice broke. Tears ran down her face. "It was the same with my first three boyfriends. Every time I got pregnant, you made me get rid of it because the deal fell through. You wrecked my body.

"After five years with Wade, I finally got pregnant... and now it's gone too. The doctor said my uterus is basically paper now. I can't have kids anymore..."

Jennifer snapped and smacked her. "Enough. Quit crying. Didn't we already line you up with that old widower? Just marry him and take care of him. You don't need kids."

Vanessa covered her face, shaking. "But... I heard that old guy's a total creep—and abusive. He's had a bunch of wives way younger than him. None of them lasted more than a few years... they all died. Compared to that, I'd rather stay with Wade. At least he actually loved me."

Jennifer raised her hand to hit her again—

The lights cut out.

After checking, Darren stomped around, furious. "That jerk Wade cut everything—water, power, gas, internet. He did it on purpose!"

Vanessa grabbed her phone. Her stomach dropped.

The shared payments were gone. The backup card Wade set up? Gone too.

Every cent she had was already transferred to her family.

Now she had nothing.

As everything spiraled, a courier knocked. "Vanessa Sutton—registered letter!"

Confused, Vanessa forced herself up, opened the door, and ripped it open.

She froze.

A divorce decree.

The whole family went pale.
