Nevertheless, everyone around me looks at me with caution in their eyes. "Emely, are you thinking of getting involved with Ryker again? Are you trying to mess up Sydney and Ryker's relationship?" "Three years abroad and you still haven’t learned your lesson. Ryker is too forgiving; he shouldn’t have let you come back." "Exactly. Chapter 1

Three years ago, the person I loved most sent me away to another country.

Now, three years later, I finally have the chance to return home.

But I no longer have any feelings for Ryker Armstrong.

Nevertheless, everyone around me looks at me with caution in their eyes.

"Emely, are you thinking of getting involved with Ryker again? Are you trying to mess up Sydney and Ryker's relationship?"

"Three years abroad and you still haven’t learned your lesson. Ryker is too forgiving; he shouldn’t have let you come back."

"Exactly. Someone like her should be locked up, should have stayed overseas permanently."

I just respond with silence.

But then, I heard some news that shattered me.

I found myself muttering to myself.

"Judah."

"Have you seen my Judah?"

"Please, don’t die."

"You promised you’d come find me."

I spiraled into madness for a long time.

Eventually, no one thought I was pretending anymore.

Ryker pushed through the crowd and pulled me into his arms.

But his hands were shaking.

"Emely, what’s wrong?"

"Who is Judah?"

"Please don’t scare me like this."

---

I'd been back in the country for less than an hour and had already received countless hostile messages.

"How dare you come back?"

"Couldn't any criminals abroad deal with you? Maybe you need a lesson taught the hard way."

"Why didn’t your plane crash and put an end to you?"

...

I didn’t bother reading the rest of the messages.

I just grabbed my laptop, opened my email, and quickly typed out a message.

I sent just a simple line.

"I made it back safely."

Once sent, the recipient’s avatar remained black, and there was never a reply.

I sat there, gazing blankly at the screen.

Hearing footsteps, I shut the laptop.

My mom walked in, her hair piled high.

"Emely, why are you looking at your mother like a stranger?"

I stayed silent for a moment, lost in my thoughts.

Mom wiped her tears and walked out.

That night, I heard the sound of something crashing in the study.

"Does she blame us?"

"She pushed Miss Wells down the stairs; she was in a coma for three months."

"Stop it."

"It’s all in the past now. Ryker and Miss Wells are about to get engaged. We can’t afford any slip-ups."

As I clutched my coffee cup, my hand trembled slightly.

I turned away and quietly left the room.

I stood at the altar, my fingers trembling slightly as they clutched my bouquet of white roses and lilies. The garden-themed venue was exactly as I'd dreamed—fairy lights twinkled among strategically placed greenery, transforming the upscale Manhattan ballroom into an enchanted forest. I'd spent months planning every detail, from the cascading ivy on the archway to the delicate floral centerpieces that adorned each table. My father, Marco, stood proudly beside me, his warm hand steady on mine. I caught his eye and he gave me a reassuring smile, the corners of his eyes crinkling with joy. He looked handsome in his tailored tuxedo, his salt-and-pepper hair neatly combed for the occasion. "You look beautiful, mi hija," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Ryan is a lucky man." I squeezed his hand in response, too overwhelmed to speak. The string quartet played softly in the background, and the afternoon sunlight streamed through the venue's floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a golden glow over the assembled guests. I scanned the crowd, searching for Ryan's familiar face among the sea of smiling attendees.

The soft chime of the boutique door echoed behind me as I stepped into the sanctuary of luxury that was Maison Laurent. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over displays of exquisite fabrics, each piece more breathtaking than the last. The familiar scent of expensive leather and subtle perfume wrapped around me like a comfortable embrace. I glanced at my phone—Reid was running twenty minutes late from his business meeting, but I didn't mind. Shopping at Maison Laurent was never a chore, especially when I had time to truly appreciate the artistry before me. "Miss Ford, how wonderful to see you again," Miranda Chen approached with her characteristic warm smile, her sleek black hair pulled into a perfect chignon. As the boutique's senior sales associate, Miranda had helped me select pieces for countless events over the years. "Are you looking for anything special today?" "Just browsing while I wait for Reid," I replied, running my fingers along a silk blouse that probably cost more than most people's monthly salary. "We have dinner reservations at eight." That's when I saw it. Hanging alone in the center display, bathed in its own spotlight, was the most stunning dress I'd ever laid eyes on.

At the business dinner, my husband Aidan's business partner asked him in German, "Your mistress is two months pregnant. What are you planning to do?" Aidan smiled slightly, attentively serving me wine and food. He then replied in German, "My wife doesn't like children. I'll have Tatiana give birth and then take the child abroad to raise, just to continue the family line." I sipped my red wine, but tears quietly slipped down my cheeks. Aidan looked a bit flustered, "Why are you crying?" I forced a smile and explained, "This red wine is a bit overwhelming, it's making my eyes uncomfortable." But the wine was smooth and not very strong; the tears were because I understood German.
