Shattered Bonds: The Ruthless Heiress Returns

Arlena wakes in a hospital room one month before the apocalypse, with her grandmother and uncle forcing a bone marrow donation consent form on her for her cousin Brandi. They sent her parents away to isolate her. In her past life, she signed—and the procedure wrecked her immune system just as extreme weather and societal collapse hit. While she lay weak, her family drained her trust fund, took her home, and left her to freeze in an alley. This time she refuses. Her uncle locks the door and attacks her to take the marrow by force. But the compliant niece is gone. Arlena stabs surgical scissors through his hand, shreds the form, and escapes to unlock her grandfather's hidden pocket dimension, where she will build an impenetrable doomsday fortress and let them rot in the coming hell.

Chapter 3

The elevator doors opened, and we entered the hospital lobby.

Arlena walked straight past the security desk, her eyes fixed on the glass door ahead.

She pushed open the door and stepped into the evening air.

A fine, cold rain was falling, instantly soaking the thin cotton fabric of her hospital gown. The chill made her shiver, but it was real. It was vibrant. She was free.

A yellow taxi was parked on the side of the road. Without thinking twice, she opened the back door, slid in, and slammed the door shut.

The driver, a weathered-looking man with a gray ponytail, glanced at her in the rearview mirror. His gaze swept over her hospital gown, her bare feet, and the wild look in her eyes. He didn't say a word.

“Drive,” Arlena said, her voice trembling slightly from the cold. “To the suburbs. North.”

The car pulled away from the roadside, its tires hissing on the wet asphalt. The hospital gradually shrank in the rearview mirror, and with it, a lifetime of obligations vanished.

She watched the city lights blur by, her thoughts racing. Dale would call her parents. He would fabricate a story about a nervous breakdown, about a senseless attack. She had to get in touch with them first. She had to control the narrative.

“Sir,” she said, leaning forward, “I need to make a phone call. An international call. It’s an emergency. I’ll pay for it, I promise.”

The driver, whose nameplate read Mitch Sullivan, met her gaze again in the mirror. He seemed to have considered her request carefully for a long time. Then, he muttered something and handed the phone back to her. “Use it, kid.”

Her fingers, cold and clumsy, dialed her father's number. It rang once, twice, a third time. The transoceanic connection felt like an eternity.

“Hello?” It was her father’s voice. Robert Sharp. Relaxed, cheerful. The voice of a man on vacation.

“Dad?” Arlena’s voice choked. A hot tear traced a path through the dirt on her face. “Dad, it’s me.”

“Arlena? Honey, what’s wrong? You sound like…” The relaxation in his voice vanished, replaced by a sharp worry.

“They wanted to force me to do that, Dad,” she sobbed, letting fear and adrenaline fill her voice. “Grandma and Dale. They locked me in my room. They wanted to force me to sign the donation papers.”

She heard a rapid gasp on the other end of the phone, followed by her mother Helen's voice in the background. "Robert, what's wrong? What happened?"

“They lied to you,” Arlena continued, her words flowing freely. “They said it was a simple procedure, but it wasn’t. Dale… he wanted to hurt me. I had to run.”

A roar erupted from the phone, so loud it made Mitch Sullivan tremble in the driver's seat. It was her father; his voice was like the force of nature. "That son of a bitch. I'm going to kill him. Helen, he actually laid a hand on her!"

“Dad, listen to me,” Arlena said, her voice suddenly hardening. The crying had worked. Now it was time for instructions. “You can’t come back on the original flight. They know your itinerary. They might do something. Change your tickets. Take the earliest flight as soon as possible, but don’t tell anyone. Go home right now. Please. I’m scared.”

It's easy to feign fear. The deeper, more real fear—the fear that something terrible might happen to them on their way back—was the fear she couldn't express.

“We’re going back now, my darling daughter,” Robert said, his voice strained with anger and determination. “We’re on our way. Don’t worry. Nobody will touch a hair on your head again. I swear on my life.”

The phone call was filled with the father's anger and his promises. He yelled at Helen to pack her bags and call the airline. He cursed his mother and brother. The gentle, appeasing father she knew was gone, replaced by a lion whose cubs were threatened.

A profound sense of relief washed over Arlena, so intense it made her dizzy. She had done it. She had altered the timeline.

Mickey passed a box of tissues from his seat. “It sounds like you did what you had to do,” he said, his voice carrying a deep Texas accent. “You’ll succeed.”

Arlena pulled out a tissue and wiped her face. "Thank you."

Her own phone, left in the pocket of the jeans she'd worn to the hospital, started vibrating. She took it out. The screen lit up, displaying Grandma Tucker's name. Then a text message: "You murderer." Then another: "You broke Brandi's heart."

She ignored it. The taxi turned onto a quiet, tree-lined street in a neighborhood she hadn't seen in years. It was a street of comfortable two-story houses with neatly manicured lawns.

“Here,” she said, pointing to a dark house at the end of a dead-end alley. “This is it.”

That was the house her grandfather left her, an asset unknown to the Tuckers family. It was her refuge. Her fortress.

She paid Mitch's fare with emergency cash hidden in her phone case and gave him a generous tip. He handed her his business card. "If you need a ride, don't ask any questions, just give me a call."

She stood on the porch, the cold rain soaking her hospital gown into her skin, watching the taxi's taillights disappear from sight. Her phone vibrated again. A text from Dale: "I'm going to sue you for assault. You're finished."

She almost burst out laughing.

Another message popped up. It was from her father: "All family numbers have been blocked. We're coming back now. Love you."

This completeness is suffocating. The bonds have been severed.

She found the spare key under the loose slab of stone, right where she had left it years ago. The lock was stiff, but it still turned.

She went inside and entered the dark and silent house. She locked the door behind her, the sound of the latch sliding in echoing in the empty hallway.

She was alone. She was safe.

But she has work to do.
