Chapter 3

– Rebirth from Ashes

**GemWorld Expo – Opening Night**

Orchestral music thundered as crystalline lights pulsed across the vaulted glass ceiling. Gemstone holograms spun midair—sapphires blooming, diamonds fracturing into constellations.

Sophie Zhi stepped onto the central dais.

She wore matte black, her neckline graced by a choker forged from repurposed prison steel. It gleamed under sapphire-blue lights, its twisted edges softened into cruel elegance.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

“Is that… steel?” someone whispered.

“No,” a critic murmured. “That’s rage. Refined.”

Xiao Mei whispered behind her, “It’s working. Cameras everywhere. You’re trending in twenty countries.”

Sophie stared out over the sea of luxury gowns and glassy eyes.

“This is just the beginning.”

---

At the back of the hall, Ethan Bo entered unannounced.

He moved like a storm in a tailored suit, each footstep swallowed by plush carpeting and disbelief.

An aide hissed, “Mr. Bo, press didn’t know you’d—”

“I’m not here to speak.”

But the moment he stepped into the hall, Sophie felt him.

Her spine straightened. She didn’t look. Not yet.

The announcer cleared his throat.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Rebirth from Ashes Collection—designed by Sophie Z.”

Spotlights narrowed.

Sophie lifted the mic.

“In prison, you lose your name. You become a number. A threat. A liability.”

A silence bloomed.

“But I refused to disappear. I sketched designs on soap wrappers, bartered thread for wire, shaped copper with spoons.”

The crowd was still.

“My debut collection is forged from that place. Every piece is named after someone who survived wrongful conviction. Every gem is conflict-free. Every metal was once part of a cell.”

She gestured.

Barbed-wire bracelets encrusted with diamonds shimmered beneath the lights. Cell bars bent into spiraled pendants. Cuffs echoing shackles—recast, reimagined, reborn.

“I was sentenced to silence. But tonight, I speak.”

The crowd erupted.

Applause thundered. Influencers live-streamed. Collectors whispered bids.

Ethan watched from the shadows, expression unreadable.

Then she said it.

“Some wonder if this was sponsored by Bo Consortium.”

A beat. Every lens turned.

Sophie tilted her chin.

“I design for survivors. Not executioners.”

Gasps, again.

Xiao Mei’s jaw dropped.

Sophie didn’t flinch.

Ethan stepped forward.

Photographers swiveled. His presence hit the room like an avalanche.

He cut through the crowd, eyes locked on Sophie’s.

“Careful,” he said under his breath when they were face-to-face. “You’re setting fire to bridges that don’t exist anymore.”

“Wrong,” she replied. “You lit the match six years ago. I’m just showing the world the ashes.”

**SYSTEM NOTICE: Hate Level increased to 23% → 35%.**

**Backstage – Minutes Later**

Sophie stood alone, exhaling slowly.

Then—

“Mommy!”

Leo burst through the curtain, holding a toy plane.

Ethan’s head turned. His breath caught.

The child’s face.

Steel-grey eyes. That same tilt to his smile.

Time fractured.

Sophie swooped in, scooping Leo up. “You weren’t supposed to run.”

Leo giggled. “I saw sparkles.”

“Back to Xiao Mei,” she whispered. “Now.”

But Ethan had already stepped forward.

“What’s his name?” His voice was low. Sharp.

Sophie’s posture shifted. “Not your concern.”

“I saw his face.”

She didn’t blink. “A coincidence.”

“You’re lying.”

“Maybe,” she said. “Maybe not.”

Leo tugged her sleeve. “Who’s he?”

She crouched beside him. “Just a stranger, sweetheart.”

The word burned.

Ethan stared at the boy, his mind racing. Every frame he’d paused last night—the photos, the tilt of the head, the laughter—confirmed what his gut screamed.

She was hiding his child.

Sophie turned and walked away, Leo clinging to her.

Ethan didn’t move.

Behind him, cameras clicked.

---

**That Night – Bo Tower Surveillance Wing**

Ethan stood alone in the dark.

“Pause at frame forty-two,” he ordered.

The screen froze. Leo looking up, smiling. Ethan’s childhood portrait mirrored beside it.

“Zoom.”

His voice trembled.

A lab tech entered.

“You wanted expedited DNA?”

Ethan handed over the juice box Leo had dropped. “Rush it.”

The tech hesitated. “Mr. Bo, if this is—”

“Do it.”

He stared at the screen again.

“You kept him from me,” he whispered. “Why?”

---

**Meanwhile – Sophie’s Apartment**

Leo curled up on the sofa, dozing.

Sophie removed her choker, fingers trembling slightly.

**SYSTEM NOTICE: Hate Level at 35%. Recommend continued emotional escalation.**

“Quiet,” she murmured.

**RECOMMENDATION: Custody conflict will accelerate target’s hatred. Implant scan confirms match.**

Sophie swallowed.

“Does he… know?”

**Data suggests 91.2% suspicion. Projection: confrontation within 48 hours.**

She turned to the mirror.

For a second, she saw herself not as Sophie Z, the rising designer.

But as Prisoner #28813, alone, terrified, and two months pregnant.

“You made me kill everything I loved,” she whispered to the reflection. “Now I’ll kill the illusion that you’re untouchable.”

---

**Next Morning – Sunbeam Academy**

The elite school’s gates gleamed gold. Parents waited with chauffeur-driven cars.

Sophie led Leo inside, his tiny backpack bouncing.

Then a voice.

“Good morning, Ms. Zhi.”

She turned.

Ethan Bo.

Standing with security clearance and an envelope in hand.

“You don’t belong here,” she said.

“I bought the place.”

“What?”

“Technically,” he said. “Just the board. I wanted to see my son’s first day.”

“He’s not your—”

“I have DNA results,” Ethan said, voice hard. “He’s mine.”

She didn’t answer.

“Why hide him?” he demanded.

“Why pretend you would’ve cared?” she shot back.

He stepped forward. “I would’ve fought.”

“You already did,” she said coldly. “You fought me into a cell.”

**SYSTEM NOTICE: Hate Level increased to 41%.**

“You’re going to regret this.”

Sophie pulled a document from her coat.

“Custody filing. Father: Deceased.”

“You forged—”

“I protected him. From a man who buried me alive.”

Parents nearby glanced at the commotion. Sophie stepped between Ethan and Leo.

“You touch him again, I burn you in court and in the press.”

Ethan’s nostrils flared.

“War it is.”

He walked off, snapping into his phone. “Purchase increased security for all Sunbeam branches. Public philanthropy angle. Now.”

Inside, Leo sat quietly at his desk, drawing.

A crayon sketch: a figure under storm clouds, labeled “Unknown Sky.”

When the teacher turned away, Ethan returned.

He looked at the drawing, hesitated, then folded it and slid it into his pocket.

Not to destroy. But to keep.
