Chapter 3

Aurora's POV:

I left the Dragon Crystal dining hall, the heavy silence of the corridor pressing down on me. The ghost of Gideon's fury still clung to the air, making the light from the wall-mounted crystals seem dim and strained.

I bypassed our shared master suite and headed straight for the guest wing. From this night forward, my life would be my own.

I had just reached the heavy oak door of the guest room when a hand clamped down on my arm, hard enough to bruise.

It was Gideon. His face was even darker than it had been in the dining hall, his deep gray eyes burning with the fire of offended pride.

"What did you mean by that?" he demanded, spinning me around. The sudden force of his grip sent a sharp, shooting pain through my wrist.

I let my arm go limp in his grasp. "Exactly what you heard."

His eyes raked over my face like shards of glass. "Do you really think you can force me to agree to a Rejection Ritual?"

"I am informing you," I said, my voice quiet and steady.

My defiance ignited the powder keg of his rage. His grip tightened as he dragged me down the long hall, his long strides forcing me to stumble after him. He threw open the door to the master suite and shoved me inside.

I lost my footing, catching myself on the edge of a heavy wooden console table. A porcelain vase of dragon's-blood roses teetered, then crashed to the marble floor, shattering with a sharp, violent crack. Red petals scattered like drops of blood.

Gideon slammed the door shut. He advanced on me, his fury so intense that it fractured the illusion of his human form.

Jagged, obsidian dragon horns pierced through his dark hair. Massive, scaled wings erupted from his back, sweeping forward to envelop me in a suffocating cocoon of shadow. A thick, powerful dragon tail slithered across the marble floor, coiling tightly around my waist and pinning me flush against the edge of the table.

He cornered me, his hand shooting out to grip my chin tightly, forcing my head up.

In a daze, I stared at the dark scales gleaming in the dim light. In my past life, I had convinced myself that this suffocating physical dominance was a display of his fierce possessiveness—a hidden, primal proof of his love.

Looking into his cold, unyielding eyes now, the truth was glaringly obvious. This was just his insatiable need for absolute control. He viewed me as his property.

A profound, bitter ache swelled in my chest, souring the back of my throat.

"Aurora Foley," he began, his voice dropping to a low, cruel whisper that chilled the room. "Have you forgotten who gives you everything you have?"

He leaned in closer, the cold, metallic scent of the council chambers on his skin mixing with the sickeningly sweet stench of his mistress's perfume.

"Your title as Duchess," he sneered. "This expensive, scale-patterned silk gown on your back. Even the very air you breathe in this house belongs to the House of Carlisle."

"Without me," he enunciated each word slowly, deliberately, "you are nothing."

The words struck my chest like a physical blow, driving the breath from my lungs. The bitter ache magnified into a sharp, agonizing pain that bloomed behind my ribs, radiating outward until it consumed my entire body.

You are nothing.

I stared into his eyes, and the devastating truth finally sank in. This was how my husband truly saw me. I was just a pathetic creature surviving on his charity, a piece of property he owned and could discard at will.

The pain in my chest grew so intense I thought my heart might actually tear in two. All the lingering hesitation I had harbored swelled into a suffocating knot in my throat. I had loved him so much it hurt, and this was what my love amounted to: nothing.

But then, as the pain reached its absolute peak, something inside me simply snapped.

The suffocating knot dissolved. The crushing weight on my chest vanished. In its place, a strange, weightless sensation washed over me. It was a profound, quiet sense of release.

The agonizing tether that had bound my soul to Gideon Carlisle for ten long years finally broke. I was free.

I looked up at him. The last, desperate embers of warmth and longing in my eyes died out completely, leaving behind a desolate, frozen tundra.

I held my ground, calmly raising my hand to wrap my fingers around his wrist. With a steady, deliberate motion born of pure, unadulterated apathy, I pulled his hand away from my chin.

My absolute calm stunned him.

"I see," I said. My voice emerged as a strange, new thing—a tone of absolute, chilling indifference.

I looked at him as if he were a stranger.

"If that is how you see it, then we have nothing left to discuss, Lord Carlisle."

Lord Carlisle.

The title struck him harder than a physical blow. I watched his pupils contract in sudden shock. It was a name used by his soldiers, his servants, and his subjects. Coming from my lips, stripped of any affection or fear, it was deeply alienating.

His arm went completely slack. The dragon tail coiled around my waist loosened in his bewilderment. His face transformed into a mask of pure shock, and for a fleeting moment, I saw a flicker of panic in his gray eyes.

Before he could recover, I stepped back, slipping out of the cage of his wings.

"Do not follow me," I said, my voice flat and final.

I turned and walked out of the master suite, stepping carelessly over the shattered porcelain and crushed roses. I could feel his hot, incredulous stare burning into my back until I rounded the corner of the corridor.

I reached the guest room, stepped inside, and locked the heavy door behind me.

I leaned my back against the cool wood and slowly slid down until I was sitting on the floor. I pulled my knees to my chest. A single tear slipped down my cheek—a final mourning for the naive girl who had loved him so fiercely. I wiped it away.

There was only the quiet, steady beating of my own heart, and the overwhelming, peaceful realization that I had finally let him go.

She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission.
