Chapter 2

When my phone was returned to me, there was a string of missed calls, all from Clara and her assistant.

I called back.

Clara asked me sharply, "Where are you? Where did you hide the documents I put in the office drawer?!"

I was flabbergasted because I didn't understand what she was talking about.

Clara kept accusing me. "I'll give you half an hour. If you don't send the documents back, I'll call the police. Don't test me, Jason. My patience has a limit."

I was confused and looked at the policewoman next to me.

She heard everything and motioned for me to hand her the phone.

Taking my phone, she said seriously, "Mrs. Jenas, your husband just came out of the detention center. There's still a fine to be paid. If you want to make a police report, come directly to our police station."

To my surprise, Clara scoffed.

"Jason, I'm not in the mood for jokes."

Then, she immediately hung up.

I didn't know what happened, but the police asked me to wait at the police station; they would notify Clara to come pay the fine.

Half an hour later, Clara walked in.

Her face was as dark as thunder. She confirmed something with the police.

"Was he really in the detention center for the past 10 days? He didn't go anywhere else?"

The officer replied impatiently, "That's right. I don't care if you believe me, just pay the fine."

On the way back to the company, I pieced together what happened from Clara's conversation with her assistant.

Yesterday, the bidding documents Clara kept in her drawer had mysteriously vanished.

It was for the company's most important and confidential project of the year, and only Clara had the final draft.

Tomorrow was the bidding day.

I asked, puzzled, "There's no backup for documents that important?"

The assistant explained in a whisper, "Mr. Tyler accidentally spilled water on Ms. Peyton's computer, and the hard drive is completely ruined."

Clara warned me solemnly, "Maxey already feels very guilty; he's a sensitive guy. You are not to mention this matter in front of him."

Everyone in the company was extremely busy, as if the company had entered a state of war.

Well, except for Maxey, who was browsing the web in Clara's chair, looking bored.

When he saw us, he strode over with a smile.

"Clara, you found Jason? Did you find the documents?"

He took Clara's hand and hooked it intimately.

"I told you, Jason must have taken the documents out of spite. There's no need to worry about the bidding."

Clara's expression was odd, and she didn’t utter a word.

Maxey's smile froze, and his gaze turned to me.

"Jason, don't tell me you lost the documents?"

When I remained silent, he frowned.

"Clara told me about the divorce. I know it's unfair to you, and that's why you're unhappy with her, but still, you shouldn't have touched the company's documents. After all, that's everyone's hard work."

He changed his tone. "Please return the documents to us. I've already persuaded Clara not to pursue the matter if you do."

Clara squeezed out a few words through gritted teeth, "He didn't take it."

Maxey seemed stunned. "That can't be..."

Suddenly, the system gave me an order again. "Slap him hard! Hurry!"

How could I dare to touch Clara's darling?

But I had finally figured out what was happening.

The reason the system asked me to smash the police car was so that I would have an alibi.

Even though it asked me to self-sabotage, it wasn't trying to harm me.

Since I had figured that out, I raised my hand and slapped Maxey in the face with all my strength!

"You fake scum!" I repeated the line the system told me to say.

"Who do you think you are to meddle in other people's family affairs? Why don't you mind your own business and stop staring at someone else’s wife! You know I can’t produce the documents, so you intentionally try to stir crap. I think the one who took the documents must be you!"

The air went still.

Maxey covered his face in shock. "You…"

I slapped him again.

"I what?! Don't talk to me. I don't talk to morally depraved homewreckers because you guys are dirty!"
