I Cut Our Secret Mate Bond, Why Are You Begging at My Northern Throne?
Chapter 3
The basement beneath the pack clinic was freezing, smelling faintly of sulfur, damp soil, and dirty bandages.
A single naked bulb hung from the low ceiling, casting sickly yellow light across rows of rusted shelves and stacked crates. I sat on a broken wooden stool in the corner, staring at the thick oak door that led to the upper corridor.
Heavy, impatient footsteps echoed down the timber stairs.
It was Julian. Even without the sound of his boots, the thrum in my veins would have announced him. For three years, that unseen tether had hummed between our ribs, whispering his proximity, his mood, his heartbeat.
"Chloe," his muffled voice came through the wood, laced with lazy condescension. "Open up. I brought you some dinner from the main hall."
A dented tin bowl clattered against the iron latch outside.
He didn't care that I hadn't eaten since yesterday. He just wanted to stand over me in the dark, perform his petty act of charity, and remind himself how generous he was for keeping me alive under his feet.
I didn't move toward the door.
Instead, I closed my eyes, turned my focus inward, and reached for the glowing silver thread embedded deep in my soul.
It was the secret mate bond Julian had sworn to honor beneath the moon—the bond he had betrayed the second a wealthy Alpha's daughter offered him power. Most wolves believed a mate bond was indestructible, an eternal decree that could only be broken by an Alpha's formal rejection or death itself.
They were wrong.
Any bond could be severed, if a wolf possessed enough royal blood to burn it out.
I wrapped my mental grip around the metaphysical tether, coiling raw willpower around the glowing cords.
Right outside the door, Julian suddenly gasped.
The tin bowl slipped from his hands, clattering loudly against the stone floor, spilling lukewarm soup across the threshold.
"What... what is that?" Julian choked out, his voice instantly strained, choking on air.
He staggered against the doorframe. The wood groaned under the sudden dead weight of his body.
I didn't answer. I tightened my hold and pulled.
A violent surge of white-hot agony tore through my chest, ripping straight into my core.
I bit down hard on my lower lip, tasting the hot, coppery tang of blood as my teeth punctured the flesh. My vision swam with blinding static. It felt as if a pair of burning iron shears were slicing through my lungs, peeling away three years of shared breaths, whispered promises, and stolen warmth.
My knuckles turned chalk-white as I gripped the edges of the wooden stool.
*Rip it out.*
Every lie he had ever told me flashed behind my eyelids. The way he had held Selena's hand on the dais. The way he had watched his mother smash my family's teacup and throw my mother's shawl into the mud.
With a silent, guttural roar from deep inside my soul, I snapped the tether in two.
The backlash hit me like a physical punch, knocking the breath from my throat. But right behind the pain came a rush of absolute clarity.
The phantom scent of pine and cedar that had haunted my senses for years evaporated, incinerated by the awakening frost of my own dormant bloodline. My lungs expanded, taking in cold, pure air that belonged to no one but me.
Outside, Julian let out a strangled, agonizing scream.
His body slammed hard against the corridor wall. Footsteps dragged erratically against the dirt floor, accompanied by harsh, wet coughing.
The heavy iron latch rattled violently, and the basement door was kicked open.
Julian stumbled into the dim room, one hand clutching his chest as if his ribs had caved in.
He looked unhinged. His dark hair was disheveled, plastered to his forehead with cold sweat. His ceremonial Alpha jacket was unbuttoned, his face pale as ash.
Thick drops of dark red blood dripped from his left nostril, splattering across his collar.
"What did you do?" he wheezed, his chest heaving violently as he leaned against the doorframe to keep from collapsing. "What... what black magic did you just use on me?"
I slowly rose from the wooden stool.
The pain in my chest was gone, replaced by a terrifying, icy stillness. I stood at my full height, rolling my shoulders back. A strange, humming warmth thrummed through my veins—the dormant royal power of the Frost Wolf bloodline, finally unbound from the shackles of an unworthy mate.
Julian stared at me, his bloodshot eyes wide with unmasked panic.
He tried to summon his Alpha aura. The air in the small room rippled, a suffocating pressure rolling off him in a desperate attempt to force me to my knees.
It didn't even make my hair stir. The command washed over me like water breaking against an iron cliff.
Julian recoiled, coughing up a mouthful of blood into his trembling palm.
"I can't feel you," he whispered, horror cracking his voice. "Chloe... the bond. Where is the bond? What did you do to our link?!"
"I destroyed it," I said.
My voice was barely louder than a whisper, yet it rang through the damp basement with the cold authority of a gavel.
"That's impossible!" Julian lunged forward, grabbing a shelf to steady himself. His fingers dug into the rusted metal. "An Omega can't break a mate bond! You don't have the strength! You must have swallowed poison, or used some filthy rogue hex—"
"I am not an Omega, Julian." I took a single step toward him.
The ambient temperature in the cellar plunged. A thin sheen of frost crawled across the damp floorboards around my boots, crackling softly in the silence.
Julian’s pupils contracted into pinpricks. The scent of fear rolled off him so strongly it overwhelmed the metallic stench of his blood. For the first time in his life, he wasn't looking at a helpless orphan from the kitchens. He was looking at a predator that could tear him apart where he stood.
"You took an oath under the harvest moon," I said, my tone flat, devoid of anger or grief. "And you traded it for an alliance with Silvercrest. You wanted to lock me down here, throw me scraps, and keep me as your silent, broken secret while you played Alpha with another woman."
"Chloe, wait—" Julian reached out a bloodstained hand, his fingers twitching, desperate for the spiritual connection that had anchored him since he was nineteen. "You don't understand pack politics! I had to take Selena! My father forced my hand! But you... you were always going to be mine!"
"I was never yours," I replied.
I took another step forward. The overwhelming pressure radiating from my presence forced him back two paces, his boots sliding through the soup spilled on the floor.
He clutched his sternum, gasping as phantom tremors ripped through his wolf. Without the bond to balance him, the psychic feedback was shredding his internal channels from the inside out.
"The bond is dead, Julian," I said, looking into his terrified eyes. "Just like my love for you."
I didn't wait for him to speak. I didn't offer him a glance of pity.
I walked past him, my shoulder brushing his rigid frame. He tried to grab my arm, but the sheer cold radiating from my skin shocked his fingers, forcing him to pull back with a sharp hiss.
I climbed the wooden stairs with steady, unhurried steps.
I walked through the back corridor of the clinic, pushed open the rear exit, and stepped into the open night.
A fierce northern blizzard had rolled in over the mountains. The wind roared through the pines, whipping blinding white snow across the stone courtyard. Lanterns flickered wildly in the storm, but no guards stood at the iron perimeter gates—they were all inside the warm dining hall, drinking to celebrate Julian's engagement.
Behind me, from the depths of the clinic cellar, a raw, agonized howl tore through the howling wind.
It was Julian, shrieking in psychic torment as his soul finally realized what it had lost.
I pulled the hood of my coat over my head, walked through the open gates, and disappeared into the blinding snow.
