Chapter 5

The Russell Jewelry building rose from Madison Avenue like a monument to old money and older secrets. Standing on the sidewalk, I tilted my head back to take in the full height of the limestone facade, its windows gleaming like diamonds in the morning sun. Art Deco flourishes carved into the stone spoke of an era when craftsmanship meant something, when beauty wasn't mass-produced in factories overseas.

Eleanor had given me the address last night over dinner at Le Bernardin, along with a key card and a warning: "The company has been struggling, dear. Some of the staff may be... resistant to change."

What she hadn't mentioned was the man waiting for me in the marble lobby.

He stood near the reception desk like he owned the place, which, I was beginning to suspect, he thought he did. Tall and lean, with silver hair that probably cost more to maintain than most people's rent, he wore a charcoal suit that whispered expensive with every movement. His eyes—a cold shade of blue that reminded me of winter mornings—tracked my approach with the calculating precision of a predator sizing up prey.

"Nora Russell, I presume," he said, stepping into my path before I could reach the elevators. His voice carried the kind of crisp authority that came from a lifetime of being obeyed without question.

I stopped, adjusting my grip on the leather portfolio Eleanor had given me. "That's right. And you are?"

"Walker Griffin." He didn't extend his hand, and neither did I. "Eleanor's great-nephew. I've been running the day-to-day operations of Russell Jewelry for the past five years."

The way he said it made it clear that he considered those five years his audition for permanent ownership. The way he looked at me made it equally clear that he saw me as an unwelcome interruption to his carefully laid plans.

"How nice for you," I said, matching his cool tone. "I'm sure Eleanor appreciates your... stewardship."

Walker's smile was sharp enough to cut glass. "Let's not pretend this is a social call, shall we? You're here because you think you can waltz in and claim an inheritance you never knew existed. I've done my research on you, Miss Russell. A small-time jewelry maker from Seattle, recently dumped by her fiancé. Your timing is remarkably convenient."

Heat flashed through my chest, but I kept my expression neutral. Nathan had taught me that showing weakness only invited more attacks. "You investigated me?"

"Of course I did. It's called due diligence." Walker stepped closer, and I caught the scent of his cologne—something expensive and predatory. "You ran a tiny repair shop with your boyfriend until three weeks ago. Now suddenly you're Eleanor's long-lost granddaughter? Please."

I set down my portfolio and crossed my arms, letting him see that I wasn't intimidated. "If you did your research properly, Mr. Griffin, then you also know I just recovered a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from that ex-fiancé. I don't need your family's money. I only need the opportunity to prove myself."

Something flickered behind Walker's cold blue eyes. Surprise, maybe, or calculation. "Prove yourself at what, exactly?"

"At making the Russell name mean something again in this city."

The elevator chimed behind us, and Eleanor emerged wearing a navy dress that probably cost more than my monthly rent in Seattle. Her silver hair was arranged in a perfect chignon, and she moved with the kind of effortless elegance that comes from generations of good breeding.

"Walker, dear," she said, her voice carrying a note of warning. "I see you've met our newest family member."

Walker's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I was just welcoming her to the company."

"How thoughtful." Eleanor's smile was pleasant, but her eyes held steel. "Nora, shall we go upstairs? There's so much to show you."

The elevator ride to the fifteenth floor was silent except for the soft hum of machinery and the tension crackling between Walker and me like static electricity. Eleanor stood between us, her presence the only thing keeping the peace.

The Russell Jewelry offices were everything I'd expected and nothing I was prepared for. Gleaming hardwood floors stretched beneath crystal chandeliers that threw rainbow fragments across cream-colored walls. Display cases lined the hallways, showcasing pieces that belonged in museums: a necklace that had graced the throat of a Gilded Age socialite, earrings worn by a Broadway legend, a tiara commissioned for a robber baron's daughter.

But underneath the grandeur, I sensed something hollow. The offices were too quiet, the staff too few. Several display cases stood empty, their velvet interiors bearing the ghostly impressions of jewelry that was no longer there.

"The conference room," Eleanor announced, opening a door to reveal a space that could have hosted treaty negotiations. A mahogany table dominated the center, surrounded by leather chairs that looked older than I was.

Walker took his seat at the head of the table like it was his birthright. I chose a chair halfway down, close enough to participate but far enough to maintain my independence.

"I've given this considerable thought," Eleanor began, settling into her own chair with practiced grace. "Nora will be joining us as an apprentice designer. She'll start at the bottom, learn every aspect of the business, prove her worth through her work rather than her bloodline."

Walker leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "And who will be overseeing this... apprenticeship?"

Eleanor's smile was sharp as a blade. "Why, you will, of course. Who better to guide her than our most experienced designer?"

I felt the trap closing around both of us. Eleanor was playing chess while Walker and I had been playing checkers. By making him my mentor, she'd ensured he couldn't sabotage me without making himself look petty and unprofessional. At the same time, she'd given him a front-row seat to watch for any sign that I wasn't worthy of the Russell name.

"How generous of you to volunteer Mr. Griffin's time," I said sweetly. "I'm sure he has better things to do than babysit the new girl."

Walker's smile was cold enough to freeze champagne. "Not at all. I'm very interested in seeing what you can accomplish. After all, if you're going to fail, I want to have the best possible view."

The gauntlet had been thrown. I picked it up without hesitation.

"One year," I said, looking directly into his winter-blue eyes. "That's what Eleanor and I agreed on. One year to prove I can revitalize this company and make the Russell name shine again. When I succeed, you'll find yourself working for me."

Walker stood slowly, his movements deliberate and predatory. "And when you fail, you'll slink back to Seattle with your tail between your legs. I'll even pay for the plane ticket."

Eleanor cleared her throat delicately. "Perhaps we should discuss the practical arrangements—"

But neither Walker nor I broke eye contact. The air between us crackled with challenge and mutual disdain. I'd thought Nathan was the worst kind of opponent—the kind who dismissed you while pretending to love you. But Walker was something else entirely. He was the kind of enemy who would smile while he destroyed you, who would make it look like your own fault when you fell.

Good. I'd had enough of men who underestimated me.

"There's one more thing," Eleanor said, sliding a manila folder across the table toward me. "The legal paperwork for your position. Our law firm, Whitmore & Associates, has been handling Russell family affairs for decades. They'll need to verify your identity, update the corporate structure..."

I opened the folder, scanning the dense legal text. At the bottom of the first page, I saw a signature that made my blood run cold.

Nathan Whitmore, Associate Attorney.

The universe, it seemed, had a twisted sense of humor.
