Chapter 2

The morning light streaming through my apartment windows felt different—cleaner somehow, as if the air itself had been purged of something toxic. I was sitting at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee, scrolling through apartment listings in Portland, when the sound of keys in my lock made me freeze.

Keys I should have demanded back last night.

The door swung open without so much as a knock, and Lainey waltzed in like she owned the place. She was wearing my denim jacket—the vintage one I'd been looking for all week—over a tight black dress that screamed 'morning after.' Her hair was tousled in that deliberately messy way that took an hour to achieve, and she carried an oversized designer bag I'd never seen before.

"Morning, roomie," she said with a saccharine smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Just here to grab Nathan's things. Don't mind me."

I watched her saunter toward the bedroom, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor I'd refinished myself last summer. The casual arrogance in her stride made my jaw clench.

"That's my jacket," I said quietly.

She paused in the doorway, glancing down at the denim as if she'd forgotten she was wearing it. "Oh, this old thing? I thought you'd thrown it out. It was just sitting in the back of the closet collecting dust."

"It was in my closet. In my bedroom. Which you had no business going through."

Lainey shrugged, the gesture infuriatingly dismissive. "Relax, Nora. It's just a jacket. Besides, after that pathetic little stunt you pulled last night, I figured you'd want to focus on more important things. Like therapy."

She disappeared into the bedroom, and I heard drawers sliding open, hangers scraping against the closet rod. The sounds of her dismantling the life I'd built with Nathan filled the apartment like fingernails on a chalkboard.

"Seriously though," her voice drifted from the bedroom, accompanied by the rustle of clothing being stuffed into bags, "sending Nathan an invoice? That's a new level of pathetic, even for you. No wonder he left. He needs a woman, not an accountant."

I set my coffee cup down with deliberate precision, the ceramic clicking against the saucer. Three years of biting my tongue, of playing the supportive girlfriend while this woman ate my food, used my Netflix account, and apparently helped herself to my wardrobe, crystallized into perfect clarity.

I stood up and walked to the bedroom doorway. Lainey was bent over an open suitcase, folding Nathan's shirts with the kind of domestic care she'd never shown for anything in her life. The sight of her treating his belongings with such tenderness—belongings I'd paid for—sent a surge of cold fury through my veins.

"You know what's really pathetic?" I said, my voice calm as still water. "A grown woman who's been stealing from her best friend for three years."

Lainey straightened, clutching one of Nathan's ties. "Stealing? What are you talking about?"

I walked to my dresser and opened the bottom drawer, pulling out a small jewelry box. Inside were the cheap earrings, hair ties, bobby pins, and random trinkets Lainey had left scattered around my apartment over the months. The detritus of a person who treated other people's homes like her personal storage unit.

"Let's see," I said, dumping the contents into an empty shoebox. "The jacket you're wearing—mine. The earrings you wore to Nathan's graduation—mine. That lip gloss you're always 'borrowing'—also mine. Should I keep going?"

Lainey's face flushed red, but she lifted her chin defiantly. "Those are just little things. Friends share—"

"Friends ask permission. Friends say thank you. Friends don't sleep with their best friend's boyfriend." I taped the shoebox shut with more force than necessary. "But you're not my friend, are you? You never were. You're just a leech who found a comfortable place to attach herself."

I shoved the box toward her feet, where it landed with a satisfying thud. "You can keep all of this junk. Consider it a going-away present. Along with Nathan—he's your problem now."

Lainey's mouth opened and closed, her usual quick comebacks apparently failing her. For the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely rattled.

"But," I continued, stepping closer until she had to crane her neck to look at me, "if you're not out of my apartment in exactly ten seconds, I'm adding the security deposit to Nathan's bill. And trust me, after three years of your sticky fingers and late-night 'emergencies,' that deposit has been well-earned."

"You can't be serious—"

"Ten."

Lainey grabbed the suitcase handle, her movements suddenly frantic.

"Nine."

She slung her oversized bag over her shoulder, nearly knocking over my bedside lamp in the process.

"Eight."

"Nora, you're being completely unreasonable—"

"Seven. Six."

She stumbled toward the door, dragging the suitcase behind her. It caught on the doorframe, and she yanked it free with a sharp curse.

"Five. Four."

"This isn't over!" she called over her shoulder, but her voice cracked with panic.

"Three. Two."

The front door slammed shut with enough force to rattle the windows.

I stood in the sudden silence of my apartment, listening to the rapid click of her heels retreating down the hallway. The quiet felt profound, like the moment after a storm passes and you realize you've survived.

I should have felt empty. Devastated. Alone.

Instead, I felt... free.

I walked to my phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found Chelsea's number. My assistant would be at her desk by now, probably already fielding calls from vendors and clients.

"Chelsea, it's Nora," I said when she picked up. "Cancel all my meetings this week. Actually, cancel everything for the next two weeks."

"Is everything okay? You sound—"

"I'm great. Better than I've been in years. Start packing up the inventory. We're leaving Seattle."

There was a pause on the other end of the line. "Leaving? For how long?"

I looked around my apartment—at the candles still sitting on the dining table, at the champagne bottle still chilling in its bucket, at the life I'd built around someone who'd never deserved it.

"Permanently," I said. "It's time for a fresh start."

As I hung up the phone, it buzzed with a notification. A wire transfer confirmation from my bank: $152,430.00 received.

My phone immediately lit up with a text from Nathan: "I had to borrow from a loan shark to get this money. I hope you're satisfied. You've destroyed my credit before my career even started."

I stared at the message for a long moment, then deleted his contact information entirely. The money wasn't revenge anymore—it wasn't even payment for services rendered.

It was startup capital.

I opened my laptop and transferred the entire amount into my business account, watching the numbers shift from personal loss to professional opportunity. Somewhere in Portland or maybe San Francisco, there was a life waiting for me. A life where I wouldn't have to shrink myself to fit someone else's idea of who I should be.

The champagne was still cold. I popped the cork and poured myself a glass, raising it toward the window where the morning sun painted everything in shades of gold.

"Here's to new beginnings," I said to the empty apartment.

And for the first time in three years, I meant it.
