Safe in His Arms, Wild in His Heart Novel Cover

Safe in His Arms, Wild in His Heart

Mia asked Ryder for a single weekend—just long enough for him to teach her what she wanted, then walk away. It was never meant to become anything more. But one weekend turns into a connection neither of them can outrun, and they wreck each other for anyone else. She becomes the secret he can't keep; he becomes the love she can't survive. Even after everything falls apart, neither truly moves on. A modern romance built on forbidden tension, impossible choices made for all the right reasons, and chemistry that refuses to burn out.

Chapter 2

Ryder

She knocked, and my life tilted on its axis.

I had noticed Mia long before she ever spoke to me. You'd have to be blind not to. Tall, athletic, with that blaze of honey-blonde hair that caught the lecture-hall lights like a warning signal. But it wasn't her looks that lingered. It was the way she watched the world, like she was cataloguing every detail, filing it away for later, letting no one in. She was the smartest person in every room, and she knew it, and she was also the loneliest. I recognised that combination because I'd worn it myself for decades.

When she showed up at my door, I thought maybe she needed notes. Maybe she was doing a survey. Anything but what she actually said.

Teach me.

The words replayed in my head all night. I barely slept. Beside me, Elena, my girlfriend of three years, breathed evenly, undisturbed, her blonde hair fanned across the pillow. She was a good woman. Steady. We'd built a quiet life together, the kind that felt more like a partnership than a romance. We hadn't had sex in months. She hadn't noticed. I hadn't pushed. Our love was comfortable, and comfort, I had convinced myself, was enough.

But Mia's request had cracked something open.

It wasn't the sexual proposition that kept me awake. It was the trust. She'd chosen me, out of everyone, because I made her feel safe. That word kept echoing, heavy and sacred. I had spent my whole adult life trying to be the kind of man people could rely on, and here was this brilliant, terrified girl handing me her deepest vulnerability like it was nothing, like it was everything.

The next day, I met her at a coffee shop near campus. Neutral ground. She was already there when I arrived, sitting in a corner booth, both hands wrapped around a ceramic mug as if it were anchoring her to the earth.

"You came," she said, not quite hiding her relief.

"I said I'd think. Thinking requires being here." I slid into the seat across from her. Our knees didn't touch. I made sure of it.

She looked exhausted. Beautiful, but exhausted. The kind of tiredness that comes from holding your breath for years.

"I need to ask you questions," I said. "And I need honest answers."

She nodded.

"Why now? Why after graduation?"

She traced the rim of her mug. "Because after graduation, everything changes. I'll be a different person in a different city. If I don't do this now, I'll carry the fear forever. I don't want to start my real life, still afraid of my own body."

The honesty wound me. I leaned back, studying her. "And if I say no?"

"Then I'll figure something out. But it'll be harder. And probably lonelier." She met my eyes. "I didn't choose you to make it easy. I chose you because I thought you'd be worth the courage."

God, this girl.

"I have boundaries," I said. "Hard ones."

"Tell me."

"One weekend. A neutral location, an Airbnb, somewhere remote. No one we know. You book it, I'll pay my half. This isn't transactional. I'm not buying anything, and you're not selling."

"Agreed," she said, without hesitation.

"I'm still with Elena." The words tasted like ash. "I won't lie to her more than I have to. If she asks where I'm going, I won't give details, but I won't invent some elaborate cover story. If this becomes something that requires constant deception, it ends."

"Understood."

"And if, at any point, you want to stop even in the middle of anything you say the word, and we stop. No questions. No disappointment. No guilt."

Her eyes glistened, just for a second, before she blinked them away. "That's... that's exactly why I came to you."

I wanted to reach across the table and take her hand. I didn't.

"One more thing," I said. "This isn't just a favour. I'm not a robot. If we do this, it's not a performance. I'll be present. Fully. Do you understand what that means?"

She swallowed. "Yes."

"Then I'll do it."

She let out a breath that seemed to carry half her lifetime. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The coffee shop hummed around us, the hiss of the espresso machine, the murmur of other people's easy conversations. Our silence was anything but easy.

"I'll send you the Airbnb link tonight," she said, standing up. Her hands were shaking again. I noticed. I noticed everything.

"Mia."

She paused.

"You're not broken," I said, for the second time in two days. "But I'm starting to think someone made you believe you were. That stops now."

She didn't cry. She was too strong for that in public. But her chin lifted, just slightly, and some of the tension in her shoulders eased. It was the first time I'd ever seen her look anything close to hopeful.

She walked out, and I stayed in the booth, staring at her half-empty mug for a long time. The weight of what I'd agreed to hadn't landed yet. But I knew it would. I knew it would change everything.

Elena texted me. Dinner tonight?

I stared at the screen. Then I typed back: Sure. See you at home.

Home. Such a fragile word.
