Rising From Fire: The Betrayed Wife's Return Novel Cover

Rising From Fire: The Betrayed Wife's Return

Six years ago, I was bound to a chair in an abandoned warehouse, watching my fiancé and half-sister sneer as they revealed the truth: the patent I perfected was theirs, the baby I carried wasn't his, and my inheritance was already stolen. Then my half-sister doused me in gasoline, and my fiancé lit the match. I crawled out of that inferno—barely alive, identity erased, face destroyed. For six agonizing years, I lived like a ghost, enduring brutal surgeries to rebuild myself. Now I've returned with a new face and a contract to marry my former fiancé's comatose uncle. I will wake my husband, rescue my blind son, and drag my murderers straight to hell.

Chapter 3

The manor was silent, wrapped in the deep velvet of midnight.

Elara, dressed in black silk pajamas, stood by the wall that connected her room to Caspian's. She pressed her ear against the cold plaster, listening. Only the faint, rhythmic beep of medical equipment reached her.

She couldn't force her way in. Finch's warning had been clear, and she couldn't risk raising suspicion so early in her plan.

She turned and opened her suitcase. Inside, beneath a layer of simple, elegant clothes, lay a set of compact, state-of-the-art medical diagnostic tools. Beside them were small, unlabeled vials of potent serums. Her real armor.

She needed an opportunity. A legitimate reason to be in that room.

The next morning, she went down for breakfast. The long, formal dining table was empty except for a single place setting for her. A maid informed her that Mr. Arthur Kensington took his meals in his study. The others... had their own lives.

As she ate, Elara casually asked the maid about Caspian's condition, her tone one of wifely concern.

"Mr. Caspian's condition... there's been no change," the young woman said, her voice full of pity. "The doctors say there's very little hope."

"Who is his primary physician?" Elara asked. "I'd like to be briefed on his case."

"I... I wouldn't know, ma'am," the maid stammered. "You could ask Mr. Finch."

A cold, familiar voice cut through the air from the doorway. "Are you my uncle's new wife?"

Elara's hand, holding a silver fork, paused for a fraction of a second. She slowly lifted her head.

Julian Kensington stood there, impeccably dressed in a bespoke suit. His assistant, Cole Price, hovered behind him. Julian's eyes raked over her, probing, searching.

"I'm Elara Vance," she said calmly, meeting his gaze without flinching.

He walked toward the table and took the seat opposite her, his eyes never leaving her face. "Elara Vance... A fine name." The words were laced with a strange, mocking undertone.

She knew her new face and the six-year-old death certificate were her shield, but the name was a calculated risk.

She arched a delicate eyebrow. "Is there a problem with my name, Mr. Kensington?"

Julian smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "No. It just reminds me of someone I used to know."

He leaned forward slightly. "I hear you married my poor uncle for the money." His question was a blunt instrument.

Elara placed her fork down, dabbed her lips with the linen napkin, and her movements were unhurried, graceful. "I don't believe that's any of your business, Mr. Kensington."

His smile vanished. He wasn't used to being spoken to this way, especially by someone he perceived as a gold-digging nobody.

Elara stood up. "If there's nothing else, you'll have to excuse me." She gave a slight nod and turned to leave.

As she walked away, she felt his eyes on her back, but she had what she needed. He had given her the opening.

She went straight to the second floor, to Caspian's room. Two guards stood impassively outside the door.

"I'm Mrs. Kensington," she said, her voice firm. "Mr. Arthur has given me permission to see my husband."

One of the guards spoke into his wrist communicator, confirmed her story with Finch, and then stepped aside.

Elara pushed open the heavy door. The room was dim, smelling of antiseptic and stale air.

Caspian Kensington lay on the bed, a network of wires and tubes connecting him to the silent machines. His face was impossibly handsome, sharp and aristocratic even in stillness.

This was him. The father of her children. A man entangled in her fate by a cruel act of conspiracy.

She moved to his bedside, pretending to check the monitors. Under the cover of adjusting his blanket, her fingers found the pulse point on his wrist.

It was faint, but beneath the weakness, she felt a strange, erratic flutter. It was completely inconsistent with the official diagnosis of brain death.

Her eyes narrowed.

He wasn't brain-dead. He was poisoned. A complex, insidious neurotoxin she recognized from her past research.

She could save him.

And bringing him back would be the ultimate blow to Julian.

Her hand moved, a blur of motion. From a small pocket in her sleeve, she produced a silver needle, thinner than a human hair. As she smoothed the blanket over his arm, she pricked a specific acupoint, held it for a second, and withdrew it.

The entire act was over before a breath could be drawn. The first dose was administered. Her secret treatment had begun.
