Chapter 2

The company breakfast sat in the glass-walled conference room on the twelfth floor, the kind of early meeting where coffee smelled stronger than the pastries and everyone still pretended to be fully awake. I took my usual seat near the middle of the long table. Sophie slid into the chair on my right without asking, already arranging my tablet and the printed agenda the way she always did.

I left the processor on.

Marcus had texted earlier that he’d join late. That gave me a clean window. I kept my expression even and let Sophie settle in beside me like nothing had shifted since yesterday.

Nora Bennett arrived with a small cluster of senior staff. She was sharp in a navy blazer, the kind of woman who never wasted a sentence. When she reached our end of the table she stopped, smiled directly at me, and spoke in a clear, warm voice.

“Elena. Good to see you back fully. Your proposal last year was the smartest thing this company rejected. I’ve been hoping we’d get another shot at something like that.”

The words landed clean and exact through the processor. At the same time Sophie’s hands moved in my peripheral vision, translating for me the way she had for years.

I watched her signs.

*Nice to see you. Hope you’re doing well.*

That was all.

No mention of the proposal. No acknowledgment that anyone still thought about the work I’d put forward. Just a bland, polite greeting stripped of every useful detail.

I kept my face still. My pulse did not.

Marcus had told me the board didn’t want me near core business anymore. He’d said it gently, like he was protecting me from disappointment. Sophie had backed him up with careful signs and soft eyes. I’d believed them because the silence around me made it easy to believe.

Now I had both versions at once—the real sentence and the watered-down one—and the gap between them was wide enough to walk through.

Nora waited for a response. Sophie’s hands hovered, ready to keep translating.

I didn’t call either of them out. I simply turned a fraction toward Nora, pulled my phone free, and opened a new contact card.

“I appreciate that,” I said out loud. My voice still sounded a little strange to my own ears, but it was steady. “I’d like to stay in the loop myself going forward. Can you send everything—invitations, materials, follow-ups—straight to me as well?”

I typed my private email and personal number into the card and held the screen toward her.

Nora’s eyebrows lifted once, then she nodded and entered the information without hesitation. “Of course. You’ll get the same packets I send the rest of the strategy group. Glad you’re taking point again.”

Sophie went rigid beside me. Her phone buzzed almost immediately with the shared calendar update Nora triggered. The exclusive channel she’d controlled for years—every invitation, every file, every quiet side conversation—had just been duplicated in front of her.

She tried to smile. It didn’t hold.

“I can still handle the coordination,” she said quickly, switching to speech now that she knew I could hear. “It’s easier if it all funnels through one place. You don’t need the extra noise.”

“I want the originals,” I answered. Not loud. Not soft. Just final.

Nora glanced between us, caught the tension, and moved on to the next person with a polite nod. The rest of the breakfast continued—updates, numbers, light jokes about quarterly targets—but the air at our end of the table had changed. Sophie barely touched her coffee. Every time someone spoke near me she started to sign out of habit, then stopped herself, fingers curling into her palm.

Marcus walked in twenty minutes later. He took the empty seat across from us, signed a quick good morning, and reached for the fruit plate. His eyes flicked to Sophie’s tight posture, then to me.

I met his gaze and kept eating.

When the meeting broke and people began standing, he came around the table. Sophie stepped back a few feet, giving us space she clearly didn’t want to give. Marcus signed first, the movements crisp and controlled.

*You went around her. That puts her in an awkward spot in front of everyone. She’s been handling this for you for years.*

I answered out loud so there would be no translation filter between us.

“I want to receive the things people give me. Myself. Not the edited version.”

His hands paused mid-air. For a second I thought he would push—explain, justify, turn it into another conversation about how much Sophie cared and how much simpler life was when I let other people buffer the world for me.

He didn’t.

He just lowered his hands, glanced once toward Sophie, and gave a short nod that looked more like calculation than agreement. Then he signed, almost casually, *We’ll talk later,* and walked over to speak with one of the directors.

That lack of fight told me more than any argument could have.

If the filtering had been accidental—if Sophie had simply been trying to help and Marcus had only been trying to keep peace—he would have defended the system. He would have explained. He would have asked me to reconsider so no one felt embarrassed.

Instead he let it stand.

I stayed in my chair a moment longer after most of the room cleared. Sophie hovered near the doorway, phone in both hands, staring at the new shared files already landing in my private inbox. She looked smaller somehow, like a door she had always controlled had just been propped open and she couldn’t shove it shut again.

I powered the tablet down, slipped it into my bag, and stood. The processor still caught every sound in the emptying room—chairs scraping, low conversations, the soft ping of another email arriving on my phone. Nora’s first packet. Unfiltered.

Marcus was still across the room, laughing at something a colleague said. His hands moved easily when he needed them to, charming as ever. He had told a whole charity dinner once that he’d learned another language just to love me. Cameras had loved that line.

I wondered how many other lines had been rewritten before they ever reached me.

I walked out without waiting for either of them. The hallway outside was quieter, the carpet muffling footsteps. My own breathing sounded too loud in my ears for a second, then settled. I had two clean versions of the truth now sitting side by side in my head: the one people actually spoke, and the one Sophie had been handing me for years.

They didn’t match.

And Marcus had just shown me, by saying almost nothing, that the mismatch was never a mistake.
