Chapter 2

When Peter came back from work, he acknowledged Selena's greeting toward him.

Then, he instructed Selena to get a towel to wipe me down with it.

Even though Selena was displeased, she had no choice but to obey his instructions.

Peter pulled off his necktie that was restricting him, then walked around the couch to come to me. He pulled a stool over and sat down by my side.

All of a sudden, he stood up and stroked my face gently. "You are still as beautiful as you used to be. I remember when I spent five years sucking up to you to pursue you before finally touching your cold heart.

"Now, it is your turn to experience unrequited love. For some reason, this is thrilling."

In the past, I was the only one he had eyes for. Now, however, his eyes contained a whole plethora of complicated emotions.

He gulped as he brushed his finger across my lips. "You are now like a sleeping beauty," he remarked.

Then, I felt a cooling sensation on my lips.

He was kissing me affectionately.

A few coughs interrupted his tender affection, and he straightened his back. With a gloomy expression, he asked, "What is it?"

While doing her best to hold her anger back, Selena forced a smile on her face. "I'm here to wipe her down."

Peter pursed his lips and took a quick glance at me. In the end, he walked away.

The moment Selena turned her gaze to me, the smile on her face vanished. She sat down on the stool beside me and pulled my arm toward her.

As it had been a while since I moved my arm, my joints cracked the moment she grabbed me.

She placed the hot towel on my arm. In an instant, the area of my skin that the towel came in contact with turned red.

She wiped my arm forcefully as if she was letting all her frustrations out on me. The pain brought tears to my eyes unconsciously.

When she saw the tears streaming down my face, she lifted her hand and gave me one hard pinch on my thigh.

"All you do is put on a pitiful act!"

It seemed this wasn't enough for her to let her frustrations out. She rose to her feet slowly, then picked me up and pretended to wipe down my back for me.

In reality, she then let me go on purpose so that I fell back down on the bed.

The rage swirling in my chest caused my body to quiver. Yet, she misunderstood that to be a sign of fear.

"Afraid, are you? I thought you'd always be on that high pedestal of yours."

She sat back down and let out an extended sigh.

"I've taken your blessings away."

She placed her hand on her lower belly slowly. With a slight grin on her face, she said, "I'm pregnant with your husband's child. Even though they have the same father, my child…"

As she paused, she moved her hand onto my lower belly. "My child will not be as unlucky as yours."

I did not even get a chance to see that five-month-old child of mine before she passed. The moment I thought of her, I felt my blood boil.

My lips trembled uncontrollably. Nevertheless, every curse word I had was stuck at the back of my throat.

Selena curled her lips upward. She acted as though she was victorious and patted my cheek.

"Don't try so hard to get back up. Instead, do your best to leave this world. It'll be a relief to you too. After your death, all your family's assets will become Peter's.

"In the end, my child will inherit them."

My mind was overwhelmed with all sorts of surging emotions.

Snippets from the past started to piece together in my mind, and various thoughts filled my head. My intense emotions urged me to get up as soon as I could.

Oblivious to the changes within me, Selena braced herself to continue hurting me.

All of a sudden, the doorbell rang, taking her aback.

She threw the towel aside and opened the door.

A smart-looking man stood on the other side of the door. He lifted his identification and said, "Hello, I am Zachary Jenkins, a private rehabilitation therapist. Ms. Riley Gibson's parents appointed me to care for her."
