Chapter 2

"Is this a joke to you?" Director Croft slammed a glossy iPad onto the glass table.

I flinched. The sharp smack echoed in the empty Vanguard conference room. "I don't understand."

"Look at the screen, Cher." Croft crossed her arms. Her tailored blazer pulled tight across her shoulders. "Then explain why you submitted stolen intellectual property to our exhibition."

I leaned forward. The screen displayed a high-definition runway feature from *Vogue London's* digital morning edition.

My stomach plummeted.

There it was. The silk-organza blend. The hidden wire lattice. The exact bodice I had spent six months perfecting.

But the headline above the photos made my vision blur.

*MIA GALLAGHER REDEFINES AUTUMN WITH 'GOLDEN HOUR' COLLECTION.*

"These are my designs," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I drew them. I engineered that lattice."

"Mia Gallagher debuted this collection last night at the Soho Grand," Croft said. "She secured full backing from the Orion Group. Her press release went out at 2:00 AM."

"She stole them." I grabbed the iPad, swiping through the gallery. The colors were tweaked—burnt orange instead of deep crimson—but the silhouettes were undeniably mine. "She was in my apartment three days ago. She took pictures of my blueprints."

"Do you have proof of that?"

"She is my best friend! We went to design school together."

Croft snatched the tablet back. "Vanguard does not involve itself in petty domestic disputes. We deal in timestamps and registered copyrights. Gallagher filed her patents a week ago."

Before she even came to my apartment to celebrate. She had already seen my early drafts, the ones I left on the shared studio drive. She only came over to get the final bodice adjustments.

"You have to believe me," I pleaded, standing up. "I can show you the raw files. The edit history."

"We are revoking your center pavilion slot," Croft said, turning her back to me. "Your contract is terminated. Be thankful we aren't suing you for fraud. Get out."

I stumbled out of the Vanguard building. The freezing drizzle cut through my thin coat. I pulled out my phone and hit Mia's contact.

It rang three times.

"Cher!" Mia answered. Her voice was bright, entirely too loud. "I was just going to call you. Did you see the news?"

"I am standing outside the Vanguard office." I squeezed the phone, my knuckles turning white. "They just kicked me out. They said I plagiarized you."

"Oh, no." The sympathy in her tone sounded rehearsed, like a bad actress reading cue cards. "Cher, that's awful. I told my PR team to make sure the inspiration credits were vague so you wouldn't get caught in the crossfire."

"Inspiration credits?" I stopped walking. The cold pavement seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "Mia, you stole my entire collection. You copied the finale gown."

"Copied is an ugly word," Mia said. Ice crept into her previously warm tone. "We collaborated. We always bounce ideas off each other."

"I drafted every single piece. You took photos of my blueprints and claimed them as your own."

"You were stuck on that bodice for months," she countered, her voice dropping lower. "I just realized its potential before you did. The Orion Group loved it. I couldn't exactly tell them my broke roommate drew the rough sketches."

"You filed the patents a week ago."

Silence stretched over the line. Then, a soft, dismissive sigh.

"Look, Cher. Vanguard was too big a stage for you anyway. You don't have the connections. I do. This collection needed a real platform."

"I secured the pavilion," I shot back. "I had the platform."

"And now I have the Orion Group," Mia said. "I am sorry Vanguard overreacted. I really am. Let's get drinks this weekend. I'll pay."

"Fix this," I demanded. "Call Croft. Tell her the truth."

"I cannot do that," Mia said. "My investors would pull out. Just design something else, Cher. You are fast."

The line went dead.

By the time I reached the penthouse, my phone was vibrating endlessly.

Notifications flooded my screen. Instagram tags. Twitter mentions. Email alerts.

I opened the design school alumni group chat.

*Did you see Mia's post?*

*Check her story.*

I clicked over to Mia's profile. Her follower count had skyrocketed overnight. She had posted a new video ten minutes ago.

In the video, Mia sat in a plush studio chair, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue.

"I am just so heartbroken," Mia told the interviewer, looking directly into the camera. "You trust the people close to you. You share your private sketches with your best friend, thinking it is a safe space. To see my 'Golden Hour' concepts submitted to Vanguard under someone else's name… it hurts."

She didn't name me. She didn't have to.

The comments did it for her.

*Cher Mercer is a fraud.*

*Imagine stealing your best friend's work.*

*Vanguard dodged a bullet.*

I dropped the phone onto the kitchen counter. It hit the marble with a sharp crack.

The front door opened. Thorne walked in, holding a sleek leather briefcase. He stopped, taking in my pale face and the shattered phone screen on the counter.

"What did you do now?" he asked.

"Mia stole my collection." My voice shook. I wrapped my arms around my ribs, trying to hold myself together. "She took my designs and sold them to the Orion Group. Vanguard dropped me."

Thorne set his briefcase down. He didn't rush over to hug me. He didn't even look surprised.

"I saw the press release this morning," he said, walking to the fridge.

"You saw it?" I stared at his back. "And you didn't call me?"

"I was in meetings." He grabbed a bottle of sparkling water and twisted the cap off. "Besides, what did you want me to do? Orion Group is a massive conglomerate. Mia made a smart business move."

"She committed theft!" I yelled, my throat burning.

Thorne took a sip of water. "She capitalized on an opportunity. I told you last night, Cher. The fashion world is cutthroat. You play around with sketches; Mia actually went out and secured a multi-million-pound deal. That is how the real world works."

"She is destroying my reputation. She posted a video calling me a thief."

"Then issue an apology."

I froze. "What?"

"Apologize to her," Thorne repeated, leaning against the counter. He looked at me like I was a stubborn child. "Play the victim. Say the pressure got to you. If you fight this, Orion's legal team will bury you. You do not have the money to fight them."

"I am not apologizing for something I didn't do."

"Then stop complaining to me about it." He pushed off the counter. "I have a dinner with the board tonight. Make sure you wear the navy silk dress. The one that doesn't make you look washed out."

"I just lost my career, Thorne."

"You lost a hobby." His eyes hardened. "Get dressed, Cher. We leave in an hour."

He walked into the bedroom. The door clicked shut behind him.

I stood alone in the kitchen. My shattered phone buzzed again against the marble.

Another text from Mia.

*Check your email. My lawyers sent over a cease and desist. Do not make this messy, Cher.*

I stared at the broken screen. The betrayal pumped through my veins, hot and sharp, burning away the panic.

They thought I would just roll over. They thought I would quietly disappear into Thorne's shadow and let Mia wear my crown.

I reached across the counter and grabbed my keys.

I wasn't going to that dinner. I was going to find the one person in London powerful enough to crush the Orion Group.
