Removing My Corneas
Chapter 3
Listening to the laughter of the children nearby, I couldn't help but smile.
The nurse went to the bathroom and told me to wait for her to come back.
I nodded.
A few minutes later, I heard a lot of noise around me.
"Jade, what are you doing here?"
"It really is you. Are you running away from the police? They came to the college to arrest you. Why are you showing yourself in public so blatantly?"
I frowned.
"I haven't done anything. Why would the police arrest me?"
Suddenly, someone pulled me up.
"Jade, here you are. Come with me to the police station to turn yourself in."
I recognized Fred's voice and shook him off.
"Are you crazy? Why would I turn myself in?"
Lyra suddenly grabbed me and said earnestly, "Stop running away, Jade. Three lives were lost because of you. You need to take responsibility. If you confess to your crime, we'll all plead for you so that you can get a lighter sentence."
I pushed Lyra away.
"What kind of nonsense are you talking about? I didn't do anything, what responsibility do I need to take?"
Suddenly, someone grabbed my collar.
"Are you the one who ran the red light and killed my wife? You vile woman, my wife was pregnant! We were preparing to celebrate, but you killed her. You ruined my family. I want you to pay with your life!"
I was thrown to the ground. My body ached all over.
I tried to explain, "You've got the wrong person. I was in the hospital all day and have not driven a car at all today. I've also reported that my car was missing."
The man noticed my hospital gown and hesitated.
Lyra then said, "Jade, I know your family is rich and powerful so you can get the hospital to make false statements for you, but human lives were lost! How can you still deny it?"
Fred also pointed at me accusingly and yelled, "You killed someone, Jade. How can you still act like nothing happened? I can testify. I heard Jade say before that once she got her license, she would go wild in the city and run red lights for fun. Her family's rich and powerful, so she's not scared of the consequences. I tried to talk her out of it, but she still did it in the end."
The people around looked at me with extreme anger and threw things at me.
"How can someone be so cruel? She killed someone and is still acting so arrogant."
"You rich people suck the blood of us poor people, and now you don't even take the lives of ordinary people seriously. People like you deserve to die."
The man grabbed my throat angrily and said, "Just because you're rich and powerful, you think the lives of ordinary people are worthless! Only blood can pay for blood!"
The sound of sirens came, and the police immediately shouted at the man.
"What are you doing? Let her go."
The man roared unwillingly, "I just want justice for my wife and child! Why can she ruin my family and get away with it?"
The police immediately comforted the man, "Don't worry, the law will definitely give you justice."
The man let go, and the police immediately put handcuffs on me.
I explained in a hoarse voice, "Officers, you've made a mistake. I was in the hospital all day. I haven't driven a car at all."
The police stared at me coldly.
"Jade Willow, do you know that because you fled the scene to avoid getting caught, the pregnant woman didn't get rescued in time, and that's why she died?"
I asked, "What evidence do you have? I didn't drive the whole day. It wasn't me."
The police sighed, his tone full of disgust.
"The car involved in the accident was found at your house, and the surveillance and dashcam footage at the time of the accident all show that you were the one driving. Many people also saw you during the accident."
I was stunned. I wasn't there, so how could that be?
"If you confess, there's a chance you can get a reduced sentence."
Suddenly, someone asked, "What are you people doing?"
Someone else replied angrily, "This girl drove recklessly and killed someone, then fled. The police are arresting her."
Someone grabbed me and accidentally pulled off the bandage covering my eyes.
