Chapter 4

Sabrina

I woke up the next morning. He was still sleeping cutely. I grab my phone and take a photo of his beautiful face. "For a young boy, he has a lot of energy and—agh!"

I place my hand on my waist. I switch to the front camera and check my neck. He leaves too many hickeys! I grab his coat and check his wallet. I took a photo of his ID. I look at him after. "How could you lie?! We're both 29 years old!" I exclaimed.

I put it back and grab my clothes. I took a quick shower, and he's still sleeping. I placed my jade hairpin next to him. "Thank you for a wonderful night, Gabriel."

I planted a small kiss on his cheek and walked away. I didn't waste my time and headed back into Paige's ancestral home. I know my grandma was monitoring my marriage. "Welcome back, young lady!!"

The maids and butlers aligned on each side and greeted me. "Uncle Troy, where's my grandmother?" I asked.

He followed me as I entered the villa. "She was waiting for you at the table, young lady," Uncle Troy answered.

We headed into the dining room, and Grandmother was indeed waiting for me there. He pulled my chair. "I told you so," she says. She put down her chopstick and looked at my eyes.

"His roots might be good ones, but sometimes, trees can have rotten fruit," she says. She was serious while scolding me. "Too bad because you marry the rotten one," she added. "Did you tell Grandma Nelma?" I ask.

She sighed. "My cousin and I were good buddies during our younger years. She has a weak heart. I don't have the courage to tell her," she simply replied. "Please don't. Let her own grandchild expose her sins. She and Leah's parents will discipline her based on Ford's family rules."

"What are your plans now?" she asks.

I sip my juice and meet her eyes. "Grandma... I'm willing to take over our businesses. You're right. I shouldn't leave my dreams for a man," I whispered.

She smiled. "Alright. This time, you should listen to my advice," Grandmother asserts. "If that's your wish, Grandma, I will do as you say," I replied.

Two months later...

"Jenny, who made this report? Call her to my office now." She blinks and leaves right away. My secretary came back, bringing the employee that made the report.

I pointed to the folder. "I already underlined your mistakes. Check your report, and I need it before two in the afternoon. Am I heard?" I ask. She bows her head and speaks.

"My apologies, Boss Sabrina. I will change it right away!" she exclaimed.

"Alright. Next time, double-check your graphs before printing," I remarked. She raises her head and looks at me. "Understood, Boss Sabrina!"

She bows down again and leaves. Thea sighed. "You speak with the other employees gently, but to me?" She sighed and shook her head. I frowned and covered my mouth.

"What kind of smell do you have, Thea?!" I exclaimed, a little mad. She steps back and smells herself. "Huh? Are you talking about my new perfume, Boss?" she asks.

"New perfume—ugh!" I ran inside the bathroom and threw up. I feel like my stomach was being flipped upside down. After throwing up, I wash my mouth and take a deep breath. I look at my reflection in the mirror.

"Boss Sabrina, are you okay?" Thea asks. I covered my nose. "Change your clothes! I hate that smell!" I grunted.

She left and followed my order. I wipe my face with a tissue and look at my reflection. After calming down, I decided to go to the hospital and meet my grandmother there. As I arrived, she had already finished her appointment with the doctor.

"I thought you wouldn't listen to me. You need to listen to your body and go to the hospital when needed," Grandma says.

"Can you wait for me then? I want to know your test results after speaking with the doctor," I remarked.

Grandma nodded. They run some tests on me. An hour later, the results were out. Grandma tags along when the nurse asks me to get inside the doctor's office. "Congratulations, missus. You're two months pregnant with twins," Dr. Dan says.

My eyes dilated when I heard his statement. "What did you say, doctor? I'm pregnant with twins?!" I exclaimed.

She looks at me, puzzled. "Thank you, doctor. Troy, wait for my granddaughter's prescription. Sabrina, let's go," Grandma says. She drags me with her. At the parking lot, she's looking at me.

"No matter what happens, I don't want you to remarry that jerk! We can raise my great-grandchildren without them!" she grunted.

I gulp and look at her. She frowns. "What's wrong? Are you going to defy me again?!" she roars. I shake my head.

"That's not the problem, Grandma. Harold had never consummated our marriage because he keeps on making excuses. I learned that it's because Leah is the only one he wants to sleep with..." I paused.

I was nervous and scared of how my grandma will react to my confession. "What?! Then who is the father of your twins?!" she yells thunderously.

I grabbed my phone and showed her the picture. She grabs her phone and calls someone. "I want you to find someone and bring him to Paige's villa as soon as possible! Run a background check as well. I need every detail about this man. Every single detail!" She drops the call and sends the photos to that person that she calls.

"We will have another serious conversation as soon as we get home."

I didn't say a word and just listened to my grandmother's nag until we arrived in the villa. In the end, she demanded marriage for our twins. I never realized that the night I lost to my desire would result in an unexpected blessing. In my room, I stare at the photo of Gabriel.

I place my hand on my tummy. "My little ones... tell me, how can I face your daddy?"

The sharp trill of the autopsy suite's phone cut through the steady hum of the ventilation system. I was mid-incision, the familiar scent of formaldehyde and copper heavy in the air, when my assistant held the receiver to my ear. *“Chief Hunt. There’s been an accident outside your son’s school.”* Seattle rain doesn't wash away sins; it only dilutes the blood. The torrential downpour soaked through my trench coat the second I ducked under the yellow police tape outside Nolan’s private academy. Red and blue strobes fractured across the wet asphalt, illuminating the nightmare I had been summoned to witness. At the center of the intersection sat a crumpled silver convertible. And ten yards away, paramedics were pulling a heavy white tarp over a body. My mother. My chest hollowed out, the breath violently expelled from my lungs.
