Chapter 3

He didn't leave.

Three days after Juliana's failed performance, Xavier's medical file sat on my desk with a single notation in red ink: Recovery complete. Cleared for travel. I'd signed it myself that morning, witnessed by Marcus Reid, and sent word through official channels that the Silverfang Alpha's presence at Moonveil was no longer medically necessary.

He ignored it.

Alpha Garrett, in what I privately considered an excess of diplomatic courtesy, permitted Xavier to remain as a "guest" on thin territorial grounds—some alliance consideration I didn't care enough to parse. The result was that Xavier inserted himself into Moonveil's daily rhythms like a splinter working its way deeper.

He appeared at communal meals in the pack house. Observed warrior training sessions in the yard. Positioned himself near doorways I needed to pass through, near tables where I reviewed patient charts, near the medical wing entrance during shift changes.

Always watching. Always waiting.

I treated him like furniture.

On the fifth day, I was walking through the east corridor—arms full of supply inventory logs, mind half-occupied with a medication reorder I needed to submit—when he stepped out from a side hall and blocked my path.

I stopped.

"Estelle." His voice was rough, lower than his usual Alpha register. Almost careful. "I need to talk to you."

"Healer Watson," I corrected automatically. "And I have rounds in ten minutes."

"This won't take long."

He was standing too close. Not threateningly—Xavier had learned, at least, that his Alpha aura didn't work on me—but close enough that I could smell the pine-and-earth scent of Silverfang on him. Close enough to be deliberate.

I shifted the logs in my arms and waited.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out something small, wrapped in worn leather. His hands—large, scarred from years of Alpha challenges and border patrols—handled it with unexpected gentleness.

"I want you to have this," he said.

He unwrapped the leather slowly, and I saw what it was before he finished.

A carved wolf-bone pendant. Small, intricate, suspended on a thin braided cord. The carving depicted two wolves, their forms intertwined in the stylized pattern that marked courtship tokens among traditional packs.

I knew that pendant.

I'd worn it once. Six years ago. The night we first scented each other at the Silverfang midsummer gathering, when I was nineteen and stupid enough to believe the Moon Goddess's gifts came without conditions. Xavier had carved it himself—spent weeks on it, he'd told me, because he wanted it to be perfect. He'd fastened it around my neck under the moonlight, and I'd felt like the luckiest she-wolf alive.

I'd left it behind the night he rejected me. Hadn't thought about it since.

"I kept it," Xavier said, and there was something in his voice I didn't want to name. Something that sounded almost like vulnerability. "All this time. I couldn't... I kept it because what we had was real, Estelle. The bond was real."

I looked at the pendant without moving.

"The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes," he continued, his voice dropping lower, rougher. "I know things got complicated. I know I—" He stopped. Swallowed. "But we were chosen for each other. That doesn't just disappear."

He held the pendant out toward me, the braided cord dangling between his fingers.

I shifted the inventory logs to one arm and looked up at his face.

He looked—gods help me—hopeful. Like he genuinely believed this moment was the beginning of something rather than the end. Like a carved piece of bone could undo five years. Like I was still the girl who'd treasured his attention more than her own dignity.

"You're right," I said quietly.

His expression brightened fractionally.

"The bond was real," I continued in that same even tone. "Six years ago, the Moon Goddess looked at a Silverfang Alpha and a girl who didn't know any better, and she made a choice."

I met his eyes.

"And then you stood in front of your pack and said, 'I, Xavier, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Estelle Watson, as my mate.' You spoke the formal words. You severed it. You threw me beyond your borders to die."

Xavier's jaw tightened. "I thought—"

"You didn't think," I said. "You believed a lie because it was easier than questioning the wolf you'd known since childhood. You chose Juliana's word over five years of bond. That was your choice, Xavier. The Moon Goddess gave you a gift, and you broke it."

I looked down at the pendant again.

"So yes," I said. "She made a mistake. And the five years since have been the correction."

I stepped around him and continued down the corridor.

"Estelle—"

I didn't stop. Didn't turn around.

Behind me, I heard nothing. No footsteps. No movement.

I reached the end of the hall, turned the corner, and only then—only when I was out of sight—did I let out the breath I'd been holding.

My hands were steady on the inventory logs. My wolf was quiet beneath my skin.

But I pressed two fingers to my collarbone anyway, to Kingston's mark, and felt the bond hum warm and unshakeable.

That night, Marcus found me in my office.

"He's still here," he said without preamble. "Standing in the east corridor. Hasn't moved in two hours."

I didn't look up from my paperwork. "Not my concern."

"He's holding something. Looks like he's—" Marcus paused. "He looks lost, Estelle."

I set down my pen and met Marcus's eyes.

"Good," I said.

Marcus studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly and left.

I returned to my charts and didn't think about Xavier standing alone in an empty corridor, holding a carved piece of bone that used to mean everything.

I didn't think about the rejection scar spreading beneath his shirt, pulsing with a pain he'd finally stopped trying to rationalize away.

I didn't think about any of it.

I had rounds in the morning.
