Chapter 4

She returned on a Thursday afternoon.

I was in the healing wing's supply room, cataloguing inventory, when I heard the commotion in the corridor—raised voices, the sharp click of heels I recognized instantly, and beneath it all, Xavier's low rumble of concern.

I set down my clipboard and stepped into the hall.

Juliana was halfway up the east staircase, one hand gripping the stone banister, the other pressed dramatically to her chest. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow and quick. Xavier stood two steps below her, his hand hovering near her elbow like she might collapse at any moment.

"I'm fine," she was saying, voice trembling beautifully. "Really, I just need to sit down for a moment."

"You're not fine." Xavier's voice was tight with barely controlled Alpha protectiveness. "Someone needs to look at you. Now."

Juliana took another careful step upward. Her ankle wobbled.

She fell.

It was perfect. The kind of fall that looked devastating but landed with careful control—body twisting just enough to avoid real damage, hand releasing the banister at precisely the right moment, a small cry of pain that cut off into breathless silence as she crumpled against the stone steps.

Xavier caught her before she hit the landing. Lifted her like she weighed nothing, his Alpha aura flaring outward in waves of protective fury.

"Get the Healer," he snapped at the nearest Moonveil Delta. "Now."

The Delta looked at me.

I was already moving.

I reached them as Xavier lowered Juliana carefully onto the top step. She was breathing in short, pained gasps, her right hand cradling her left ankle. Tears tracked down her cheeks.

"It hurts," she whispered. "I think—I think someone pushed me."

Xavier went very still. "What?"

"I felt—" Juliana's voice broke. "I felt hands on my back. Just for a second. I tried to catch myself but—" She looked up at him with those wide, wounded eyes. "I don't want to cause trouble. I'm sure it was an accident."

The implication hung in the air like smoke.

I knelt beside her without a word and reached for her ankle.

"Don't touch her." Xavier's voice was flat, dangerous.

I looked up at him. "I'm Head Healer of this facility. She's injured on Moonveil territory. I'm going to examine her."

His jaw tightened, but he stepped back fractionally.

I turned my attention to Juliana's ankle. Swollen. Bruised. She winced beautifully when I applied gentle pressure to the joint.

I examined it with clinical precision. Noted the bruising pattern—dark purple concentrated in a narrow band around the lateral malleolus. Noted the swelling distribution. Noted the way Juliana's breathing hitched at exactly the right moments, the way her fingers trembled against the stone step.

Noted the way her left hand drifted up—just for a second—to touch her hair at the left temple.

There it was.

The same tell I'd catalogued at fifteen, watching her lie to the Silverfang elders about why I'd collapsed during my Awakening Ceremony. The same unconscious gesture she'd made the night she handed Xavier fabricated evidence of my infidelity.

She was performing.

I sat back on my heels. "The swelling pattern is inconsistent with a fall," I said quietly.

Juliana's eyes widened. "What?"

"Bruising from impact trauma distributes outward from the point of contact. This—" I gestured to her ankle. "This is concentrated. Deliberate pressure applied to a specific area."

Xavier's expression darkened. "What are you implying?"

I stood slowly and met his eyes. "I'm stating a medical observation. The injury is self-inflicted."

Juliana made a small, broken sound. "How can you—after everything you've already done—"

"I haven't done anything," I said. "But I'm going to document my findings and request security footage review."

I turned to the Moonveil Delta who'd been watching with carefully controlled expression. "Please escort the visitor to a recovery room and notify Alpha Garrett. I'll submit my report within the hour."

Xavier stepped forward, his Alpha aura expanding. "You're not going anywhere near that footage."

"I don't need to," I said. "Alpha Garrett will review it himself."

I walked past them both and headed toward my office.

Behind me, I heard Juliana's soft, trembling voice: "Xavier, please. I just want to go home."

I didn't look back.

Two hours later, Marcus found me reviewing patient charts.

"Alpha Garrett reviewed the footage," he said without preamble. "Showed it to Xavier in his office."

I set down my pen. "And?"

"Juliana was alone on the staircase. Footage shows her striking her own ankle against the banister. Twice. Then staging the fall."

I felt nothing. No satisfaction. No vindication. Just the cold, clinical certainty of evidence.

"Xavier's response?" I asked.

Marcus's expression flickered with something that might have been disbelief. "He told Alpha Garrett the footage must be doctored. That we're trying to humiliate his Luna because of—" He stopped.

"Because of me," I finished.

Marcus nodded slowly.

I pressed two fingers to my collarbone, felt Kingston's mark warm beneath my touch, and smiled without humor.

"He can't accept it," I said quietly. "Questioning Juliana means questioning the rejection. Questioning the rejection means admitting he destroyed his fated mate bond over a lie. His ego won't survive that."

"So he'll keep denying," Marcus said.

"Until there's nothing left to deny," I agreed.

I picked up my pen and returned to my charts.

Marcus lingered in the doorway for a moment longer.

"She's escalating," he said finally. "Juliana. This won't be the last move."

I didn't look up. "I know."

"And you're ready for it."

It wasn't a question.

I met his eyes and thought about the audio recording I'd restored years ago—Juliana's voice, clear and undeniable, bragging to another she-wolf about how easy it had been to poison my Awakening Ceremony. Thought about the carefully documented evidence I'd been collecting since the moment I returned to pack territory.

Thought about Kingston's quiet voice on the phone last night: When you're ready, love. Just say the word.

"I've been ready for five years," I said.

Marcus nodded once and left.

I returned to my work and didn't think about Xavier standing in Alpha Garrett's office, watching footage of his chosen Luna deliberately injuring herself and refusing—absolutely refusing—to believe his own eyes.

I didn't think about the cognitive dissonance fracturing his certainty, one crack at a time.

I had patients to see in the morning.

And a phone call to make tonight.
