Chapter 3

Amara POV:

I pushed open the heavy oak doors to the main hall and stepped inside. The air was thick with tension.

My grandmother, Matriarch Cordie Beaumont, sat in the high-backed chair at the head of the room, her spine as rigid as the ceremonial staff resting against her shoulder. Her silver hair was coiled in an immaculate bun, and her face was a stony mask of authority.

Standing near the fireplace was a woman I recognized instantly. Her presence hit me like a physical blow, dragging the past into the present. Mrs. Sullivan. Alpha Gavin's emissary. Her hair was a severe salt-and-pepper, her posture was military-straight, and her eyes, sharp and intelligent, missed nothing. In my previous life, she had overseen my disastrous union ceremony with an air of detached professionalism.

I moved to the center of the room, first inclining my head to my grandmother. "Grandmother."

Then I turned to the emissary, offering a curt, cool nod. "Mrs. Sullivan." I infused the greeting with a polite distance that held no trace of the joy a bride-to-be should feel.

Cordie's sharp gaze flickered over my plain white dress, her lips thinning in disapproval. Mrs. Sullivan's eyes did the same, a brief, calculating assessment that told me she, too, understood the message my attire was sending.

After a moment of strained silence, Mrs. Sullivan spoke, her voice crisp and direct. "Lady Amara. I come on behalf of Alpha Gavin. He sends his regards and, as a show of his sincerity for this union, has sent the first of the ceremonial tributes ahead of schedule."

She gestured to two burly Stonefang warriors standing by the door. They stepped forward, carrying a large, iron-banded chest between them. They set it on the floor with a heavy thud that echoed in the quiet room.

One of them unlatched the lid and lifted it open.

The contents glittered, even in the morning light. Piles of rare snow-leopard pelts, bolts of shimmering silk, and a fortune in raw, uncut gemstones. It was a bride-price fit for a queen.

I saw Cordie's expression soften slightly. Such a gift was a clear sign of the Stonefang Pack's respect and commitment.

But my eyes didn't linger on the treasure.

They were drawn to the object nestled in the very center, resting on a bed of black velvet.

A dagger.

It was a beautiful, terrible thing. The hilt was carved from black obsidian, and the double-edged blade was forged from gleaming, lethal silver.

My breath caught in my chest. My vision tunneled.

It was the same dagger.

The exact same one Gavin had gifted me in our first life. The one I had foolishly given to Jarrod for 'safekeeping.' The one he had later used to murder my most loyal guard while Jarrod held him down, its cold silver a harbinger of my own death that followed moments later.

It wasn't a gift. It was an omen. A weapon. A harbinger of all the blood and betrayal to come.

"Alpha Gavin had this commissioned especially for you," Mrs. Sullivan said, her voice laced with pride. "He calls it the 'Blade of Protection.' A symbol of his vow to be your shield, to protect you from all harm."

Protection. The word was a bitter mockery. A wave of grief and rage washed over me, so strong I felt dizzy. I clenched my hands at my sides, forcing myself to remain still, to not scream or run or shatter the illusion of composure I had so carefully constructed.

"Amara," Cordie's voice was sharp, pulling me from the precipice. "What are you waiting for? Accept the Alpha's gift."

Mrs. Sullivan's warrior stepped forward, lifting the dagger from its velvet bed and offering it to me, hilt first.

I had to take it. To refuse would be an unforgivable insult, an open declaration of hostility.

But I couldn't. I couldn't touch it.

I lifted my head, my eyes meeting Mrs. Sullivan's directly. My voice, when I spoke, was clear and cold, ringing with an authority that surprised even myself.

"The sentiment is appreciated," I said. "But I cannot accept this... tribute."

The air in the room froze.

The warrior holding the dagger stopped dead, his arm outstretched. Mrs. Sullivan's polite smile vanished.

"Amara!" Cordie's voice was a low, dangerous growl. "Do you have any idea what you are saying?"

"Lady Amara," Mrs. Sullivan said, her tone shifting from cordial to severe. "Is there something about the Alpha's gift that displeases you?"

I knew I was on a knife's edge. I couldn't tell them the truth. I needed a reason, an excuse so deeply rooted in tradition that an outsider could not question it without causing offense herself.

So I created one.

I lowered my gaze, allowing a somber, respectful tone to enter my voice. "It is a tradition among the women of the Beaumont line," I began, inventing the lie as I spoke. "That before a union is sanctified by the Goddess, no weapons may be exchanged between mates."

Cordie stared at me, utterly baffled. She had been the Matriarch for fifty years; she knew every tradition, every ritual. She knew I was lying. But she didn't expose me.

I continued, my voice gaining strength. "A weapon is a tool of conflict, of separation. It symbolizes a severing. Our belief is that the path to a blessed union should be paved with symbols of life and prosperity, not of war."

I looked back at Mrs. Sullivan, my expression one of solemn sincerity. "Please, convey my deepest gratitude to Alpha Gavin for his generous heart. Tell him that I look forward to receiving a gift that speaks of peace, of a future filled with growth and abundance for both our packs."

I had turned an act of defiance into a pious adherence to tradition. I had rejected his gift while praising his generosity. I had challenged his choice while framing it as a desire for a peaceful future.

It was a perfect, unassailable excuse.

Mrs. Sullivan was a diplomat. She recognized a checkmate when she saw one. She stared at me for a long, hard moment, her sharp eyes trying to pierce my facade. But I held her gaze, my expression unwavering.

Finally, she gave a stiff nod. "It seems I was not thorough enough in my research of your customs. An oversight on my part." The apology was clipped, but it was an acceptance. "I will take the blade back and convey your... wishes... to the Alpha."

The immediate crisis was averted. The warrior placed the dagger back in the chest, and the tension in the room eased, replaced by a thick, simmering undercurrent of suspicion.

I chanced a glance at my grandmother. Her eyes burned with barely suppressed fury, her knuckles white where she gripped the armrest—but with Mrs. Sullivan and her warriors still present, she could not unleash it. Instead, she fixed me with a sharp, searching stare, the kind that promised a reckoning once we were alone. It was the look of a Matriarch who had just witnessed a blatant lie under her own roof and was already calculating how to extract the truth.

Karla POV:

Hiding behind the partially ajar door, unseen by anyone, I pressed a hand to my mouth. I had heard every word—heard her openly, brazenly refuse the Alpha's gift.

And in that moment, I understood. She wasn't just nervous. She didn't want this union. A thrilling idea began to bloom in the darkness of my jealous heart.

If she wouldn't be the Alpha's mate... perhaps someone else could.
