Chapter 4

I was annotating a supply route map when Zara appeared in the doorway, her phone pressed to her ear and her face unreadable.

"It's Maren," she said quietly. "From Ironveil."

I set the pen down. My hand was steady. "What does she want?"

Zara listened for another moment, then lowered the phone. "Cameron hauled Livia before a Lycan Council tribunal three days ago. Blood-oath testimony. Thornfield operative. Wolfsbane in the wine." She paused. "Maren thought you should know."

I picked the pen back up. I didn't feel anything. Not vindication. Not satisfaction. Just a dull, distant acknowledgment that the world had confirmed what I'd already suspected.

"Tell her thank you," I said.

Zara relayed the message and hung up. She stood in the doorway watching me. "Alina—"

"It doesn't change anything." I kept my eyes on the map. "The wolfsbane didn't make him ignore me for seven years. It didn't make him buy her a pendant he never bought for me. It didn't make him walk away when Maren said I was losing the pup."

"I know."

"So it doesn't matter."

Zara was quiet for a long moment. Then she crossed the room and set her hand on my shoulder. "It matters that you were right. It matters that she's gone. And it matters that he knows."

I touched my mother's pendant. The metal was warm from my skin. "He knew the moment he signed the rejection vow, Zara. Everything after that is just him trying to rewrite the story so he's less of a villain in it."

She squeezed my shoulder once and left.

I went back to the map. Buster lifted his head from where he'd been dozing at my feet, ears swiveling toward the door. A moment later, Cillian's footsteps sounded on the porch.

He knocked. I called him in without looking up.

"Alina." His voice was measured. Careful. "You heard."

"Zara told me." I finished the annotation I was working on and set the pen down. "Thornfield operative. Wolfsbane. Tribunal. Livia's rogue now."

Cillian stepped into the room but didn't come closer. He had a folder in his hands. "The Council sent the tribunal summary to all regional Alphas. Cameron exposed her himself. Blood-oath testimony from a Thornfield defector confirmed months of wolfsbane dosing. Calibrated to suppress mate-scent recognition."

I looked at him. His face was unreadable, but his eyes were darker than usual. He was waiting for something. A reaction, maybe. Permission to care.

"Does it change anything for Moonhaven's border security?" I asked.

"No." He said it simply. "Thornfield's plan failed. Ironveil is weaker now than it was before Livia arrived. The conspiracy didn't serve them."

"Good." I turned back to the map. "Then it's handled."

Cillian didn't move. I could feel him watching me. After a long moment, he set the folder on the table beside the map.

"The wolfsbane explains the final months," he said quietly. "It doesn't explain the seven years before that."

My hand stilled on the map. I didn't look up.

"You don't have to absolve him, Alina," Cillian continued. "The tribunal gave him an explanation. It didn't give him an excuse."

I pressed my palm flat against the table. My mother's pendant swung forward, catching the light. "I know."

"Do you?"

I looked at him then. His expression was steady. Patient. He wasn't pushing. He was just asking.

"Yes," I said. "I know the difference between being manipulated and being neglectful. Cameron was both. The wolfsbane didn't make him stop seeing me. It just made it easier for him not to look."

Cillian nodded slowly. "Good."

He left the folder and walked out. Buster stood and followed him to the door, tail wagging once before he trotted back to me.

I opened the folder. The tribunal summary was clinical. Precise. It laid out every dose of wolfsbane, every suppressed instinct, every calculated move Livia had made to sever Cameron from his mate bond. It was thorough. Damning. And it didn't matter.

Because Cillian was right. The wolfsbane explained the fog. It didn't explain the seven years of distance that came before it.

I closed the folder. I picked up my pen. I went back to work.

That evening, Cillian invited me to a Moonhaven council session. Border negotiations with a neighboring pack. Resource allocation. Standard governance.

I sat at the table with Zara beside me and Cillian at the head. His Gamma presented the issue: a disputed hunting ground on the eastern border. The neighboring pack wanted joint access. Moonhaven's scouts reported increased rogue activity in the same area.

"If we grant joint access," the Gamma said, "we lose tactical advantage. But if we refuse, we risk escalation."

The council debated for twenty minutes. Voices rose. Proposals were floated and dismissed. Cillian listened without interrupting, his fingers steepled in front of him.

I studied the map they'd spread across the table. The hunting ground. The rogue sightings. The patrol routes.

"You're creating a false binary," I said.

The room went quiet. Cillian's eyes lifted to mine.

I leaned forward and traced a line on the map. "The rogue activity isn't in the hunting ground. It's along this ridge, half a mile north. They're using the disputed territory as a distraction. If you grant joint access, the neighboring pack will patrol the hunting ground and push the rogues north—straight into your unguarded flank."

The Gamma blinked. "How do you—"

"Because it's what I would do." I tapped the ridge. "Station a patrol here. Rotate every six hours. Let the neighboring pack have the hunting ground. They'll think they won. You'll have secured the ridge without a single negotiation."

Cillian's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "Gamma, implement it."

The Gamma nodded and made notes. The council moved on to the next issue.

After the session, Cillian walked me back to the cottage. The sun was setting over the water, turning the sky pink and gold. Buster trotted ahead of us, sniffing the path.

"Your mind is extraordinary," Cillian said.

I glanced at him. His tone was matter-of-fact. No subtext. No mate-bond weight behind it. Just a statement.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

We walked in silence for a while. The wind off the sea was cold. I pulled my jacket tighter.

"The tribunal summary," I said. "You didn't have to bring it to me."

"I know."

"So why did you?"

Cillian stopped walking. I stopped beside him. He looked out at the water, his hands in his pockets.

"Because you deserved to know the full picture," he said. "Not because it changes what he did. But because you earned the right to see exactly how much of it was conspiracy and how much of it was just him."

I touched my mother's pendant. The metal was cold now. "It was mostly him."

"Yes," Cillian said. "It was."

We stood there for a moment. The waves crashed against the cliffs below. Buster circled back and sat at my feet.

And then—just for a second—I felt it. A flicker. Deep inside my chest, in the place where my wolf had gone silent.

Not a howl. Not a surge. Just a flicker. Like a candle lighting in a dark room.

I inhaled sharply. Cillian's head turned toward me immediately.

"Alina?"

I pressed my hand to my chest. The flicker was already fading. But it had been there. I was sure of it.

"My wolf," I said quietly. "She... moved."

Cillian's expression shifted. Not triumph. Not relief. Just quiet, steady acknowledgment.

"Good," he said.

He didn't ask if it was because of him. He didn't ask if it was the bond. He just stood beside me and let me feel it without commentary.

I lowered my hand. The flicker was gone now. But the space where it had been felt different. Less empty. Less final.

"Come on," Cillian said gently. "I'll walk you the rest of the way."

We walked to the cottage in silence. He didn't touch me. He didn't lean closer. He just walked beside me until we reached the blue door.

"Goodnight, Alina," he said.

"Goodnight."

He turned and walked back up the path. Buster and I went inside.

I stood in the middle of the cottage with my hand pressed to my chest, feeling for the flicker that was no longer there.

But I knew it had been real.

And I knew—somehow, without being told—that it would come back.
