Love, desire, and danger envelop the story of the protagonists. They will have to fight against the adversities that destiny will present to them.
1: Betrayed
Dana
I felt queasy almost the entire trip back home. My assistant drove me home so I could rest.
All day long, I had felt a strange sensation in my chest. It felt like something bad was going to happen, but I didn't know what.
I haven't said anything to my husband to avoid worrying him.
"Miss Dana," my assistant said. She looked at me through the rearview mirror of the car.
"Yes?" I replied.
"I don't mean to be intrusive, but have you had your period?"
The question took aback me.
"Excuse me?"
"You missed your medical check-up, miss. You had an appointment with the doctor three weeks ago. And you haven't attended. You've been feeling unwell almost every day for weeks."
My heart began to beat rapidly. I hadn't even noticed.
Feeling unwell every day is not a good sign. Or it's a sign that something has changed in my body.
My menstrual cycle wasn't regular, so I never worried about it. But with my assistant's words, something stirred within me. No, my period hadn't arrived yet, and it should have by now.
I didn't reply and looked away.
He parked at home, and I got out of the car, feeling too dizzy. I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself. My assistant left, and I walked towards the house.
My husband said he had a meeting with businessmen at another company, but I noticed his car parked outside the house. I didn't see anyone in the living room. I went upstairs to my room.
I needed to rest and buy a pregnancy test. I always wanted to be a mother, but I didn't feel ready to take that big step yet.
I stood halfway up the stairs when I heard a woman's voice upstairs. Also I heard the voice of Demian, my husband. I furrowed my brows. This didn't make sense.
Why would Demian be with a woman upstairs?
I slowly climbed the stairs so they wouldn't hear me. The voices were coming from our bedroom. The first thing that crossed my mind was that Demian was cheating on me with someone else. It was the most logical answer. But it couldn't be possible. He would never do something like that to me. Demian loved me.
Fearfully, I walked towards our room and opened the door abruptly. I was met with another unwelcome surprise as I discovered my husband kissing another woman. My heart shattered into a thousand pieces. I felt like I was living in a nightmare. Three years of marriage. For what? For this?
Demian was surprised to see me, but he remained calm.
The woman had her back turned, so I couldn't see who it was until she turned around. It was Rachel.
My older sister.
I covered my mouth. I felt so disgusted. Tears streamed down my cheeks. My hands trembled, and so did my legs. I begged for this to be a nightmare. My husband cheated on me with my sister!
She and I never had a great sisterly relationship. But I never thought she would be capable of this. Rachel enjoyed the scene. I didn't matter to her. She enjoyed seeing my pain. I looked at Demian. I noticed the top buttons of his shirt were undone. If I hadn't arrived in time, they would have slept together.
"But how is this possible?!" I screamed. The pain in my chest made it hard to breathe.
"It's better if you leave now. So I can talk to Dana," Demian said to Rachel.
"Yes, dear," she smiled.
Dear? Did he call her dear? The damn shameless woman was enjoying what was happening. She did it on purpose.
"No! You're not going anywhere!" I stood in her way. "How could you, Rachel? You're my older sister! He's my husband!"
"I'm your stepsister. We're not blood sisters. I don't owe you respect, Dana. Besides, you're the one who stole Demian from me. You started this game."
But what?
I didn't understand what she said.
Did I steal him from her? Were they together before?
"Let her go, Dana. This matter is between you and me," Demian's tone was neutral.
Tears kept streaming from my eyes. I felt nauseous about what had happened.
Rachel walked past me. I wanted to stop her and hit her for betraying me. I never thought my sister and my husband would betray me like this. What did I do to them?
"Demian? After three years of marriage? Is this how you repay me? I would never have done something like this to you!"
Demian looked at me coldly.
Why was he looking at me as if I had done something wrong?
Everything was starting to make sense. Now I understand why I felt Demian was acting strange a couple of weeks ago. Whenever I asked him, he said it was because he was tired from work. But he started coming home late and leaving early in the mornings. I was a fool. I never doubted him because Demian showed me love, affection, and understanding. But weeks ago, the Demian I knew ceased to exist. I don't think I ever knew him.
He remained silent as if Demian were thinking about what to say to me.
"Speak!" I demanded.
I felt like I was going to pass out at any moment.
"I'm your Luna, Demian! You've betrayed me!"
"And you? You're no saint, Dana! I know what you did!"
I didn't understand his words.
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't pretend you don't know! You forced your sister not to tell me that her child is mine. Over three years ago, I dated your sister. She was my girlfriend. We were in love. But everything was ruined when you forced her to leave me. Rachel told you she was pregnant, and you threatened her. You forced her to break up with me! The child she has is mine."
I opened my eyes in shock.
Rachel was a liar! I never did that! I didn't even know they were together. Demian never mentioned it to me.
A child? Was my nephew Demian's son?
My head started spinning.
Oh, my God. This couldn't be happening to me.
"I don't know what she told you, but she's lying to you, Demian! You can't trust her! She's a liar."
"Don't talk about her like that!" he defended her. "I'm in love with Rachel. I don't love you, Dana."
I passed out.
2: The Divorce
Dana
Before I opened the door, I complained about the headache.
I felt dazed and lost.
My body was anxious, and I didn't understand why.
I realized I was in my room.
The walls were spinning.
I had a horrible feeling upon waking up. I remember having a terrible nightmare about my marriage: my nephew was Demian's son. My husband cheated on me with my stepsister.
I saw Demian standing at the foot of the bed. He was looking at me intently. There was something strange in his gaze. I noticed coldness, and I felt puzzled. Then, I remembered everything: My dream was not a dream. It was real. Demian did cheat on me with my stepsister, and she claimed that her son was Demian's.
I hurriedly got out of bed. I suddenly felt dizzy and had to sit down again. My eyes searched for Demian's to judge him for his actions.
"You!" I pointed at him.
"I don't think it's time for us to have this discussion, Dana."
"And when will it be the time?! You said you don't love me. You love her, and you've cheated on me with my stepsister in my own house!"
"Soon, this won't be your house, Dana," he confessed.
I looked at him attentively.
Could he...?
"Are you going to kick me out? You can't do that. We're married. This is also my house."
"It's my house. I bought it. And I don't want you here, Dana. After what I've found out about you, I don't want you here. I can't forgive you for what you did to Rachel. You made her son distance himself from me because you fell in love with me. It's disgusting," he judged.
"That's not true! I would never do such a thing! I didn't even know you two were together, Demian!" I felt desperate.
I needed him to believe me. But what was the use? Anyway, he cheated on me with Rachel. My husband!
"How can you say you love her? I am your Moon, Demian! Mother Moon has assigned us to be together!"
"I don't care what Mother Moon has assigned. I can't be with someone like you."
I looked at him with disdain. I couldn't believe it.
A month ago, Demian was the most romantic and charming man I had ever met. But today he was someone else. I didn't recognize him. I was afraid of the person in front of me.
My eyes were filled with tears. He seemed to have no mercy for me. His mind was poisoned with the lies my stepsister told him. Indeed, I never got along with Rachel, but I never thought she could do this to me.
I remained silent, crying. I didn't know what else to say.
Demian left the room and returned with an envelope. He left it on the bed and crossed his arms, looking at me.
"What's this?"
"Open it," he ordered.
I opened the envelope and took out the papers inside.
Divorce.
The word echoed in my head, and I felt like I would faint again. I never thought we would find ourselves in this situation.
I looked at my husband.
"You can't do this to me! Please, Demian, you have to listen to me. Nothing you believe about me is true," I got up from the bed and took his hands. But he recoiled in disgust.
"I'm not interested in talking about anything with you. I want you to sign the divorce papers."
Demian threw a pen on the bed.
"We can't get divorced. I don't want... I love you, Demian!" I pleaded. My dignity was on the ground. But I had to fight for him. He was the man I loved. I didn't want my stepsister to take him away from me.
"Sign," he spoke authoritatively.
I cried, but Demian didn't care.
His stance was firm and demanding. I closed my eyes and kept crying.
I couldn't look at those papers.
"Sign the papers!"
"Are you going to leave me on the street, Demian?" My voice broke.
"Do you want money? I'll give you the money. I don't need money. I'm the CEO of a multimillion-dollar company, and you won't be part of it anymore. I'll give you your money, and you'll leave my house. Sign the papers right now."
A horrible idea crossed my mind.
Did he want me to leave so Rachel could come live with him?
"Give me a few days to read the papers with my lawyers!"
It made no sense to keep begging for mercy because he wasn't willing to understand me. Anyway, he cheated on me with my stepsister.
What sense was there in staying here?
I took the pen with trembling hands. I could barely see through the tears flooding my eyes.
I didn't want to leave from here. I wanted to stay because I had the right to do so, but my pride wouldn't allow me. Demian made a mistake by trusting her, but I couldn't do anything about it. I wasn't going to allow such humiliation.
"Fine... If this is what you want, I'll do it, Demian. But you'll regret doing this to me," I pushed the pen onto the sheets.
"I won't regret divorcing someone I don't love. She's pregnant again. We'll have another child together."
I looked at him indignantly.
Did I hear correctly?
"Pregnant? You...? You got her pregnant?"
Demian's deception went further than I thought.
"That's right," he replied.
I looked at the papers on the bed and then back at him. Our story was definitively over. He ended our marriage. He destroyed it completely.
I signed the papers.
I wanted to resist. But I couldn't stay where I wasn't wanted.
"Happy?"
"You can stay here for a few days until you find another place."
He took and signed his part of the agreement.
Officially, Demian and I were divorced.
"I'll call you soon to arrange the formal rejection as Luna and Alpha."
He was going to reject me as his Luna...
I wiped away my tears.
Demian left the room.
I felt dizzy again. I didn't feel well at all. I think I was going to have to go to the hospital to get checked out. Something was wrong with me.
I called my assistant to take me to the hospital. On the way, I passed out again.
When I woke up, I was in a hospital room. My doctor walked in with a paper in her hands. Judging by her look, I knew she had news.
"We need to talk about something important, Miss Dana."
3: Twins
Dana
I looked at the doctor.
If there was something I hated, it was suspense.
The person in charge of my health wouldn't tell me what was happening.
My alarms were going off.
"Tell me what's going on with me. Am I sick?"
"I wouldn't call it that, Dana," she sat beside me and handed me a paper with medical results, "Did you know you're pregnant?"
I opened my eyes wide, but I laughed out loud. However, my doctor did not laugh.
I knew he wasn't lying to me.. My heart pounded hard against my chest.
I couldn't believe it.
Pregnant?
For a moment I thought about it, but I didn't think my assistant was right. I got pregnant, and I had just divorced the father of my children. This was a nightmare.
I was afraid of being a mother. I didn't feel ready. But something inside me changed when my doctor showed me my baby on a screen. It was a tiny spot inside me.
"This is a baby," she pointed out.
"It's so... small."
My emotions were all over the place. I felt excited, sad, desperate, and scared. A baby is a huge responsibility, and I was afraid I wouldn't be a good mother to my child. I dreamed of starting a family in the future but with Demian. And an hour ago, he left me for my stepsister.
Tears escaped my eyes.
"You're one month pregnant, that's why it's so small. But before you know it, it'll grow."
I noticed another spot close to the other one.
"And what's that?" I pointed out.
"That there is another baby."
Another baby?
It can't be possible!
"You can't be serious," I was surprised.
"You're pregnant with two, Dana," the doctor affirmed.
I allowed myself to cry. One baby was too much responsibility for me. But two? This was too much for me.
But I felt that motherly love that women talk about. I felt that deep love and desire to move forward with my children. They were the family I had left. I would fight to ensure my children had an excellent quality of life. I wanted to protect them from any danger.
"Luna, shouldn't you be happy?" the doctor asked me. She was part of our pack.
Well, I was no longer part of the pack. Demian would reject me soon.
"I ask you please not to tell anyone what you know. No one can know that I'm pregnant. Do you understand? I won't be here for long."
"What are you talking about? What about Demian, Luna?"
"Demian and I are divorced. I order you not to say a word," I demanded.
The woman was surprised by my words. But she complied. She didn't say anything else.
"I have to go," I told her.
"You can't. We need to talk about the pregnancy, Dana. There's something you need to know. It seems like your health isn't good, Dana."
"What? What are you talking about?" I panicked. "That doesn't make much sense. I'm a werewolf. It's almost impossible for us to get sick."
"It seems that's not your case, Dana. There's something wrong with you, and I'm not sure what it is. I need to continue running tests on you."
"How bad is it?"
"It's concerning," she replied.
I put a hand on my chest. My heart was racing.
The doctor told me she was expecting me for our next medical appointment. I left the hospital feeling dizzy. The news I received today was killing me. I had too much information to process.
I went back home. Demian wasn't there. He hadn't returned yet.
I waited for him for hours, but he still didn't show up. I didn't know if I would tell Demian the truth. I didn't want to. Not after everything that happened. But I had to. He was the father of my children, and I needed his help.
I heard the front door of the house. I almost ran out of the room, but I stopped.
He didn't love me anymore. So I didn't have to show him that I cared. I loved Demian. I was in love with him. I will never forget him. I never felt so much love for a man.
I heard footsteps in the hallway. Demian entered the room.
Our eyes met. I wanted to tell him what was happening. But I felt Demian wouldn't care. Demian was going to have a child with Rachel. My health wouldn't matter to him either. He chose to believe her instead of me.
Demian and I were the happiest people in our marriage. I always believed he was a gentleman and charming man. Demian was thoughtful and romantic with me until a few weeks ago. I knew something was wrong with him, but I didn't think he was cheating on me. I still couldn't understand how he could do this to me. She poisoned his mind with her lies.
"You're back, Demian."
"Don't get your hopes up. I didn't come for you. I came to get some clothes to leave."
"Leave?"
"I'm going to spend the night at Rachel's house," he answered. He turned his back and searched for clothes in our closet.
What he said hurt me.
"You're shameless!" I yelled.
I was so angry and sad. Demian had no idea the harm he was causing me. His children suffered from his treatment too. My children felt Demian's indifference.
"You're the shameless one! You kept me away from my children for years."
I still had to process that Demian had a child with my sister years ago. He never told me they were together. But I think this was Rachel's lie. She lied by saying they broke up because of me, so my nephew might not be Demian's biological son.
"Don't you see? That's not your son, Demian."
"Yes, he is my son. Rachel and I had a test done, and the results have shown that I'm the father."
It couldn't be true. Our family had money. Maybe Rachel paid to falsify the tests.
"Don't bother trying to separate me from her because you won't succeed. I can't even look at you. I can't wait for you to leave here. I'll go with her, but I'll call you to organize your rejection as Luna. I want to end this soon."
His words felt like a dagger in my heart.
"There's something you need to know before you leave," I stopped him. Demian stopped in front of the door.
I was about to tell him that I was pregnant.
4: Kidnapped
Dana
Demian had the ability to devour me with his gaze. His eyes gave me the impression that he knew all my secrets.
Demian turned around, waiting for me to say something. He crossed his arms.
"What? What do you have to tell me?"
I almost told him the truth, but something inside me screamed that it wasn't right. Something inside me begged me not to. So I remained silent and looked at him. Immediately, I felt guilty because I couldn't keep hiding from Demian that we were going to be parents together. I couldn't carry that weight for the rest of my life. But maybe the time to talk wasn't then.
We were both angry with each other. We shot daggers with our eyes. We felt resentment. Each of us had our own reasons, but we agreed that we didn't like each other.
He looked at me impatiently.
"Are you going to speak or should I leave?"
"Leave," I requested. "I have nothing to say to you," I finished and turned around. I went back to bed.
Demian scanned me with his eyes and sighed. He looked so handsome. I wanted to run and hug him. My heart couldn't understand why he did what he did. Why did he do this to me? I almost lost control and ran to beg for his forgiveness, but I wasn't to blame for any of what happened.
He left.
Hours later, I received a message from Demian that left me confused. He asked me to meet him in the parking lot near a park. A parking lot? Demian said he wanted us to sort things out privately. What did he mean by sorting things out?
Without asking too many questions, I went to the place he mentioned. I waited for him in the parking lot, just as he asked. I felt strange, but I had hope that Demian had opened his eyes. My heart was racing.
But minutes passed and Demian didn't arrive.
A black van rushed into the parking lot and almost hit me. I fell to the ground and thought of my children. I feared the fall might hurt them. Some guys got out of the van and roughly lifted me from the ground. I couldn't see their faces. I couldn't even fight back because they were too strong. They put me in the van and closed the door.
I wanted to fight. I was a werewolf. I had the strength to deal with them. But I fell asleep. They drugged me.
When I opened my eyes, I blinked several times to return my vision to normal. I felt dizzy and tired. I looked around slowly. I didn't know that dark and cold place.
I felt my hands tied behind my back and I panicked. I remembered what happened.
"Oh no... Help! Please, help me!" I screamed desperately.
I tried to break the ropes, but I couldn't.
"Don't bother screaming, because no one will hear you here."
The sound of her heels hitting the floor made me understand who it was. For a second, I thought this was Demian's doing, but he couldn't do something like this to me. Demian deceived me and betrayed me. He behaved like an idiot and broke my heart, but he wouldn't make me suffer like this.
It was Rachel. She lured me to the parking lot pretending to be Demian.
Rachel appeared in front of me.
"Surprise, dear little sister!" she showed me her evil smile.
"You... You were the one who lured me to the parking lot. Demian knew nothing about this."
"You have to admit you're foolish to believe that Demian would ask you to meet him in a parking lot. Please, Dana. I thought you were smarter than that. But you made it easy for me. Your desperation worked against you. What did you think? Did you really think Demian would genuinely apologize to you? Fix things?" she laughed loudly. "He's mine now, dear!"
I never thought Rachel was capable of doing something like this. She kidnapped me. After stealing my husband, she planned my abduction. We never got along, but I never thought her mental health was so affected to do this to me. I was her sister.
"You're my sister," tears escaped from my eyes. "Why are you doing this to me? What did I do to you? I know we never liked each other, but I love you, Rachel. We grew up together."
"You love me?" she laughed again. But suddenly, her smile disappeared, and she looked at me seriously.
I felt afraid of Rachel.
I feared for my life and the lives of my children. My children meant everything to me. Every passing second, I fell more in love with my pregnancy. I loved them. I couldn't allow that damn lunatic to hurt them. Fortunately for me, Rachel had no idea about it.
"I never loved you, Dana. You're a burden to me in the family and I should kill you right now," she took out a gun from her pants and pointed it at my head.
The world stopped for me. My heart almost jumped out of my chest.
"No, please! Don't do this to me! I'll do whatever you want, but don't kill me!" I pleaded.
She smiled.
"Of course, you'll do what I order, Dana. I want you to leave the city soon. I'll give you a few days to do it. And if you don't, I'll kill you and them..." Rachel looked at my belly.
Wait a minute. Did she know? Did she know about my children?
I felt terrified.
"Yes, Dana. I know the truth. You can't trust anyone these days, right? Your doctor betrayed you with me. Do you realize? I always win."
"I don't know what you're talking about," I pretended.
"It won't help you to pretend, Dana. You're pregnant with twins. So listen to me well, little sister," she grabbed my hair and got closer to my face. "Demian is mine. I don't want you to ever go near him. Demian will never know about your children, understood? You'll leave the city and never come back."
"Or what?" I challenged her, but I knew it was a mistake.
"I won't hesitate to kill you. Nor your children, bitch."
5: Rejected
Dana
I blinked several times, hoping to wake up from the nightmare.
Her words dumbfounded me.
"Are you capable of threatening me with death? What happened to you, Rachel?"
"I can kill you. I don't want you to get in my way or Demian's. We will start a family and get married."
Married? Did he already propose to her?
I felt a pang in my heart. I didn't want Demian to marry her. He was the love of my life.
I thought of Rachel's son. The three-year-old boy.
"Have you understood, Dana?" She pulled my hair harder. I groaned in pain and let out a scream.
"Yes! I understood! Let me go!"
Rachel let go of me abruptly. I felt humiliated by her.
"You better keep your promise. Don't make me shoot you. You have no idea what I'm capable of," Rachel reminded me.
After all this, I think I did realize what Rachel was capable of.
Rachel gave me a superior smile and turned around to leave.
Maybe it wasn't a good idea to ask her questions, but the doubt was killing me. I needed to know. Could she lie to Demian about the paternity of her child?
"Is it true that Demian is the father of my nephew?" I blurted out.
Rachel's legs stopped in their tracks. She turned around slowly. I noticed another smile on her face. She didn't answer me, but judging by her look, I knew my suspicions were true. Demian wasn't the father of her child.
I felt rage. With her lies, Rachel managed to snatch my husband away from me. Demian believed her over me! Damn it! I felt powerless.
"And is the baby you're expecting his?" I dared to ask. I knew I was treading on dangerous ground. But I needed to hear her answer.
"Of course it is," she smiled, but I couldn't believe her. There was something in her gaze that made me not believe it.
I wanted to insult her. I wanted to attack her for all the harm she was causing me.
Rachel left.
I cried uncontrollably. I was exhausted. My world collapsed, and I had to flee so that nothing wrong would happen to my children and me. I had to face life alone, without Demian. I felt so alone.
One of Rachel's henchmen approached me and hit me. My vision clouded immediately.
When I opened my eyes, I got up scared from the ground. I remembered Rachel's kidnapping as an instinct to flee danger, but I was no longer in that horrible place. I was in the parking lot again. I got up from the floor. My legs wouldn't stop shaking.
My stomach hurt too much, and I worried that something might be wrong with my children. I went to the hospital emergency room and asked to see a new doctor. My doctor betrayed me. She was on Rachel's side.
I felt relieved when they told me that the babies were fine.
Back home, I realized that Rachel had deleted the message she sent me from Demian's phone. She erased the evidence that could reveal the kind of person she is.
When I got home, I noticed Demian's car parked outside. It seemed strange. I entered the house and noticed Rachel's presence in the living room.
"What are you doing in my house?" I asked angrily.
Rachel smiled at me.
"Your house? Sorry, but this house belongs to Demian. You and he are no longer married," she replied.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded to know.
Demian came down the stairs.
"I've already brought your things to the room, darling," he said.
"Excuse me?" I raised my eyebrows. "His things? Did you bring them here?"
"I've returned to the house, Dana," he explained.
I looked at him furiously.
"You expect me to stay here for a few days while you and she are in the house? You've gone crazy!"
"No, in fact, you won't stay here, Dana. I want you to leave the house. This house doesn't belong to you anymore. I've transferred a considerable amount of money. You can manage with it for a while. Go find another place to live."
"You're kicking me out!" I realized.
My heart broke again. When it came to Demian, my heart shattered. Demian and Rachel continued to humiliate me.
"But..." I complained, but I saw Rachel's gaze.
I remembered every one of her words when she kidnapped me. I touched my wrists and felt a bit of pain. I looked at my wrists and noticed the rope marks. Why were they still there? Why hadn't I healed yet? It didn't make sense.
I looked at Rachel.
Her gaze said it all: she wanted me to leave right away. And I had to obey Demian. It didn't matter if it was unfair or not. I couldn't play by my own rules because Rachel threatened me with death. I had to protect my children from that crazy woman.
"Go, Dana. Haven't you understood?" Rachel spoke.
"Let me get my things, and I'll leave, Demian," I looked away.
I went up the stairs crying, but I made sure Demian and Rachel didn't notice. I noticed Rachel's suitcases on my bed. It wasn't my bed anymore. It was her and my ex-husband's bed. I packed my things in a suitcase while I heard Rachel and Demian laughing in the living room. Both seemed happy. And me? I was shattered. They both made sure of that.
I touched my stomach before leaving the room. I looked at the walls with nostalgia. I felt horrible when I noticed that the picture of Demian and me at our wedding was no longer on the nightstand.
I went down the stairs, and they fell silent. Demian hugged Rachel as if he loved her. Maybe he did love her. But he had no idea how wrong he was.
I walked to the door. I was going to leave without saying a word. But Demian stopped me. Like a fool, I felt hopeful that Demian would ask me to come back.
"What?" I turned around.
"I'll wait for you early tomorrow to reject you as Luna. I want to end this once and for all."
I paid for a night in a hotel. I had nowhere to stay, and I didn't want to ask my father for help because I didn't have a good relationship with him since he married Rachel's mother and cheated on my mother.
I couldn't sleep for almost the whole night thinking about what would happen. Today was the day of rejection, and I didn't feel ready for it. But Demian looked confident and determined enough. He didn't want anything to do with me. Nothing broke my heart more. His indifference hurt like a stab in the heart. My hope of him regretting his actions was dashed, but he loved another woman.
I bought the plane ticket while having breakfast. I forced myself to eat for my children, but my stomach was tied in knots. My trip to Kansas was scheduled for eight in the evening, and I didn't even have clothes to pack. I left everything at my house. Or at Demian and Rachel's house.
Demian sent me a text.
He was waiting for me at his house.
I arrived at Demian's house with a knot in my stomach. I looked at the house with tears in my eyes from nostalgia. I knocked on the door, and the maid opened it.
I felt ashamed.
"Come in," she let me in.
I saw Rachel coming down the stairs wearing my bathrobe. I wanted to comment, but I swallowed my words. She looked at me with venom in her eyes.
"Prepare my breakfast," she ordered the maid.
"Yes, Mrs. Strand."
"Mrs. Strand?" I raised my eyebrows. "Your last name isn't Strand."
"But it's Demian's last name, and he's my future husband," she replied with a wicked smile.
"I see you've taken over the house. Even my bathrobe," I felt disgusted looking at her.
My stepsister didn't wipe her smile.
"Demian and I just..." she didn't finish her sentence. "You know," she chuckled.
I wanted to kill her.
"Go to Demian's office. He'll be down in a moment to attend to you. Don't you dare touch anything in my house," she ordered and left.
A tear fell from my eye, but I wiped it away and headed towards the office. I sat waiting for Demian, who took twenty minutes to appear. When he entered, he didn't even greet me.
"I arrived more than twenty minutes ago," I reproached.
"We were showering," Rachel entered the room.
Both had wet hair.
How audacious.
"What are you doing here?" I snapped.
"It's my house, Dana. I can be here if I want," he retorted.
"I'm not doing this if she's here," I warned.
"Don't be immature, Dana," Demian judged.
"Immature?" I crossed my arms. "I'll leave if you don't get her out of the office."
Demian had no patience to entertain my requests. But he sighed and asked Rachel to leave us alone. Rachel didn't like the idea. But she left, looking at me with disdain.
"It's obvious you love her, letting her use even my bathrobe. You have no shame, Demian."
"And you're not in a position to claim anything because this isn't your house. You should have taken all your things last night."
"I would have if you had allowed me. But you threw me out like garbage."
"That's what you deserve for what you did. Rachel suffered for three years because of you. My son needed his father for three years, and all this time, I thought he was my nephew."
"I won't allow you to treat me like this! Demian, you have to respect me because I'm a decent woman!"
"Does a decent woman do what you did?"
"It's pointless to keep defending myself to someone who doesn't want to listen to me. But I don't care. I'm glad for the lies Carla told you. It frees me from you once and for all. I'll be happier without you by my side."
"Is that what you believe?" He smirked arrogantly.
"Of course. Do you think I need you to be happy?"
My words were venomous, but I knew there was some truth to them. What happened pained me every second. I wanted to scream in pain, but I had to find my happiness for myself. My life didn't end here. Demian wouldn't walk all over me. I wouldn't allow it again.
I know he didn't like my words. I saw it in his eyes, but I didn't care. I pretended to be tough when my heart was breaking. I repeated to myself that everything would be fine. I didn't need him in my life.
"Let's get this over with once and for all. I want you out of my house soon."
His words hurt.
"There's no going back if you regret this. Do you understand? If one day you discover Rachel's true personality, I promise I won't come back to you if you seek me."
"You're dead to me, Dana."
Instinctively, I touched my belly. My children heard what their father said. But it didn't matter. I would give them the life they deserved. We didn't need Demian to be happy.
"I, Demian Strand, reject you, Dana Hall, as my Luna mate."
My hands trembled as did my voice.
"I, Dana Hall, accept your rejection, Alpha Demian."
It's over. Our story ended forever.
"And you are expelled from the pack, Dana."
Thrown out of my house, divorced, rejected by Demian, and expelled from my pack.
"I swear you'll regret this, Demian."
"I doubt it. Rachel has packed your things in the room. Take them and go."
Demian left the office, leaving me there.
I walked to my old room and found all my clothes stuffed in trash bags. I felt indignant. But I didn't want to fight, so I took the bags and went down the stairs.
Rachel was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs.
"Are you leaving already?" she crossed her arms with a smile.
When I was on the last steps, Rachel pulled my arm, making me fall with the bags. I hit myself. The pain wasn't strong. But I feared for my children. Rachel bent down to my level and pulled my hair.
"Please, no. What are you doing? Demian!" I asked for help. I wanted him to see this version of his future wife.
"Demian went to work. I thought I told you not to mess with Demian, but I heard you telling him I'm a bad person. You're not holding up your end of our deal."
"I'm sorry. I won't do it again." I felt scared.
"You have all day today to leave, or I'll kill you."
I wasn't going to behave like her. Rachel was a wicked and insecure woman. She was terrified that I would take Demian away from her, but I wouldn't. I made the decision never to beg Demian again, or any man. I was sure that Demian would regret what he did to me.
The love I gave him was valuable and unique, but it was over.
6: New life
Dana
I picked up the bags with my belongings and got up from the floor. Rachel's gaze was still fixed on me.
I wanted to say so many things to her, but I had to swallow my words. If she truly got enraged, Rachel wouldn't hesitate to hit me or harm me. Her crazy look made that clear.
I almost ran to the door with tears in my eyes. I was tired of the injustice that permeated my life. I had to go to the hospital to get checked because I was afraid for my babies. Fortunately, everything was fine, but they wanted to admit me for a day to make sure. I had to refuse, even though I knew it was the right thing to do. If I didn't leave, Rachel would kill me.
I had to buy a suitcase for the trip and went to see my mother. She had no idea what had happened in my life, and I didn't plan to tell her the truth. Mom would have a heart attack and would go to kill Demian if she found out. Mom suffered too much when my father left her for Rachel's mother.
I decided to take the example my mother gave me when she divorced: she didn't need a man to be happy and raise her daughter. Seeing my mother gave me the strength to continue on my path.
"Why do you bring that suitcase, dear?"
"I had to buy one. Mine were broken. Demian and I are going on a little vacation," I lied. I felt like the worst person in the world. My mother deserved the truth.
I wanted to tell her I was pregnant, but I couldn't.
"Really? Where are you going?"
Something stirred within me.
"We don't know yet," I smiled falsely.
"Do you know? A few days ago, I saw Rachel in a baby store. It seems she's pregnant. Did you know that?"
My heart pounded hard.
Yes, of course, I knew. That child was Demian's, my ex-husband.
"I didn't know," I pretended.
"And have you and Demian talked about having children again? Do you still feel like you're not ready?"
Of course, I didn't feel ready after what happened. But the love I had for my children was enormous and unexplainable. I didn't know how we would make it, but I was sure we would get through it together. I promised myself that Demian would never find out about my children. He couldn't be near them because he was a piece of shit. They would be in danger around Rachel. I would be an excellent mother to my children, and they would never feel the lack of a father. I would work hard to be a better person.
"No..." I didn't know what else to say.
"Are you feeling okay, Dana? You look pale."
"I'm fine." I lost count of how many lies I had told since I arrived.
I left my mother's house. My suitcase was already packed and ready to go. My trip would depart soon, and I didn't want to leave. But I had to. I didn't feel safe in California.
The hours approached. While I was in the taxi, I cried without stopping. I felt like I would dehydrate. I didn't even care if the taxi driver saw me.
My flight was about to take off, so I ran to the plane and took my seat.
A new life would begin for me. I left California with a broken heart and a world of secrets. It was my children and me against the world.
Upon landing in California, I didn't know where to find a job. I knew I couldn't live my whole life on the money I had saved, so I had to find some means of support. I had never asked for a job in my life, so I didn't even know how to make an attractive resume, but I did it while the taxi took me to the hotel where I would stay for a few days until I found a permanent place.
The city was so different from California. A knot in my stomach wouldn't let me rest. Sadness and anger still overwhelmed me, as I couldn't get the image of Rachel threatening me on the stairs out of my mind. I knew that incident would linger in my mind for a while because fear had seeped into my veins.
I became prey, a target of hatred for my stepsister. She had taken everything from me.
