Chapter 1

The mind-link hit me like a cold wave while I was elbow-deep in soapy water at the diner.

*Madison. Come to my quarters. Tonight. We need to talk about our future.*

Ezra's voice echoed through my consciousness, and my hands stilled mid-scrub. Three years. Three years of stolen glances and secret meetings, of him pulling away every time I reached for him, of explanations that never came. And now, suddenly—our future?

My wolf stirred, her presence a fragile whisper in my mind. *Mate wants us. Finally.*

I wanted to believe her. Moon Goddess help me, I wanted to believe.

I finished my shift in a daze, untying my apron with trembling fingers. The fluorescent lights of the diner hummed overhead as I counted my tips—forty-three dollars. Every dollar mattered. Every cent went toward the dream that kept me going: finishing college, building something that proved an Omega could rise.

My savings passbook sat in my bag, a worn little book that held three years of sacrifice. Twenty thousand dollars. Night shifts, double shifts, skipped meals. All of it documented in neat rows of numbers.

The drive to Shadowcrest territory took forty minutes. I'd made this trip before, always in secret, always feeling like a thief sneaking into a castle where I didn't belong. The Shadowcrest Pack house rose against the night sky like a monument to everything I wasn't—stone pillars, manicured gardens, windows that gleamed with wealth.

My wolf whimpered as I approached the entrance. The scent of pine and cedar filled my lungs, and beneath it, something that made my heart ache: sandalwood and rain. Ezra's scent. My mate's scent.

*He's nervous,* my wolf observed as I climbed the stairs to his quarters. *I can feel it through the bond.*

Nervous was good, wasn't it? Maybe he was finally ready to claim me. To tell his parents that rank didn't matter, that the Moon Goddess had chosen me for him.

I knocked.

The door swung open, and there he was—Ezra Coleman, future Alpha of the Shadowcrest Pack. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair that fell across his forehead and grey eyes that had haunted my dreams for three years. His jaw was tight, and he was pacing before I even stepped inside.

"Close the door," he said.

I obeyed, my pulse quickening. His quarters were immaculate—leather furniture, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a massive bed I'd never been invited to share. I'd always stood at the edges of his life, looking in.

"Ezra, what's going on?"

He stopped pacing and turned to face me. Something flickered in his expression—was that guilt? Desperation? The mate bond tugged at my chest, urging me toward him.

"There's an opportunity," he said, his voice dropping into that low, commanding register that made my wolf want to bare her throat. "A pack investment. It could change everything for us."

"Us?" The word felt foreign on my tongue.

"If I can prove myself to my father—show him I can manage significant assets—he'll have no choice but to accept you." Ezra moved closer, and his Alpha aura pressed against me like a physical weight. "This is our chance, Madison."

My thumb pressed against my fingers—an old habit from childhood, from sitting in hospital waiting rooms while my father fought through surgeries. "What do you need?"

"Access to capital. Just temporarily." His grey eyes held mine. "I'll return it within a month, with interest."

*The savings,* my wolf said, uncertain. *Our future.*

"How much?"

"All of it."

My breath caught. Twenty thousand dollars. Three years of my life converted into numbers on a page. But Ezra was looking at me with something that almost resembled hope, and the mate bond was singing through my blood, telling me to trust him, to believe.

"I..."

"Madison." His Alpha tone wrapped around my name, and my wolf submitted instantly, rolling onto her back in my consciousness. "Do you trust me?"

I should have said no. I should have remembered every cold shoulder, every public denial, every time he'd pretended not to know me when his packmates were watching.

Instead, I reached into my bag and pulled out my banking information.

Within hours, my account was empty.

---

The diner was quiet on Tuesday afternoons. I was wiping down the counter when my phone buzzed—a social media notification from one of Cataleya Richardson's friends.

I almost ignored it. Almost.

But something made me click, and the image that loaded turned my blood to ice.

Cash. Stacks of cash, spread across a silk bedspread in what I recognized as the Shadowcrest guest suite. And there, in the center of the frame, was Ezra—my mate—grinning as Cataleya Richardson, the Beta female who'd been circling him for months, laughed beside him.

The caption read: *When your man knows how to treat you right.*

I scrolled. More photos loaded. Diamond earrings. A designer handbag. Clothes with price tags still attached.

And in the comments, someone had written: *Desperate low-ranking girls who think they deserve Alphas are so pathetic.*

My wolf howled inside me, a sound of pure anguish that echoed through my skull. The phone slipped from my fingers and clattered against the counter.

Three years. Twenty thousand dollars. Every sacrifice, every dream—scattered across another woman's bed like confetti.

My vision blurred with tears I refused to let fall. Around me, the diner continued its mundane rhythm: the hiss of the coffee maker, the murmur of human customers who had no idea that my entire world had just collapsed.

*He used us,* my wolf whispered, her voice breaking. *Our mate used us.*

I picked up my phone with shaking hands and stared at Ezra's smile—the smile I'd dreamed of seeing directed at me. The smile that had been bought with my life savings.

And something inside me, something that had bent and bent for three years, finally began to crack.
