Rejected Mate's Vengeance Novel Cover

Rejected Mate's Vengeance

I cut short my studies and returned home earlier than planned. As soon as I stepped off the plane, I spotted Alonzo Garcia, Alpha of the Silver Fang Pack, in the waiting area. He wore a black trench coat that accentuated his broad shoulders and towering frame, his commanding presence impossible to miss. His gaze was fixed intently on the exit, a bouquet of deep red roses in his hand—each bloom vibrant and full of life, a rare gesture from a man who seldom indulged in grand displays. Alonzo rarely went out of his way to make a scene. After five years as his Luna, I knew him well. He must have found out about my early return and come to pick me up. Just as I was about to approach him, a heavily pregnant woman hurried past me and flung herself into his arms. "Alpha, the baby and I missed you so much," she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion. Alonzo embraced her tightly, his protective aura enveloping her, their intimacy drawing a mix of curiosity and applause from the onlookers.

Chapter 1

My grip tightened on my suitcase handle. If he was her mate, where did that leave me?

I stood there, frozen at the exit, until someone’s suitcase collided with mine from behind. A grumbled complaint followed, "Why are you just standing there blocking the way? Can't you see people behind you?"

The commotion caught the couple’s attention. Alonzo lifted his eyes, and his gaze locked onto mine across the crowd. The air between us thickened with tension. I wasn’t sure who felt more awkward—discovering my mate’s betrayal in an airport, a scene that even the most dramatic pack gossip would struggle to conjure.

The stiffness in Alonzo’s posture made the woman in his arms suspicious. She turned to see me, her face paling at the sight. It was no stranger after all. The pregnant woman was Shiloh Hansen, a Delta in our pack and my old friend.

I took a deep breath, the scent of roses and something faintly floral—Shiloh’s mate scent—assaulting my senses. I walked briskly toward them, my heels clicking sharply against the floor. Shiloh’s face turned ashen as she hid behind Alonzo, mumbling, "Luna, why are you back?"

My knuckles whitened around my suitcase handle as I met Alonzo’s gaze, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. "Can someone explain what’s going on here?"

"If I hadn’t come back early, I suppose I’d never have known that the two most important people in my life betrayed me together."

Shiloh stepped forward, her hand instinctively moving to her prominent belly. She retreated to Alonzo’s side, her eyes filled with a mix of guilt and pity. "I’m sorry, Luna, we didn’t mean to keep it from you..."

I didn’t miss the fleeting triumph in Shiloh’s eyes, and I raised my hand, slapping her hard across the face. The sharp sound echoed, silencing her, shocking everyone around us. No one expected someone as composed as me, the former Luna, to lash out.

Alonzo held Shiloh protectively, his Alpha aura flaring as he frowned at me. "I had planned to tell you sooner. I didn’t want it to affect your studies, so I kept quiet. Shiloh said you took your education seriously, and if it disrupted your studies, she’d feel terribly guilty."

"Shiloh was only thinking of your best interests, and you should appreciate her intentions."

"If you need to blame someone, blame me. It's all my fault."

Shiloh covered her face, her eyes red, looking at me without speaking, only sniffling and saying, "Luna, can we talk about this at home?"

Home? Whose home? Mine and Alonzo’s, or hers and Alonzo’s? I no longer cared to know. The sudden blow felt like a punch right between the eyes. I held onto the suitcase handle, trying to maintain the last shred of my dignity. I enunciated slowly, "No need, my mentor sent a car to fetch me."

"Now I just need to know one thing—how long have you been together?"

Shiloh clutched her belly, stepping back in fear. Alonzo moved forward, shielding her with his body. "The duration doesn’t matter anymore. The child she’s carrying is mine. Do what you need to—yell or curse, it’s up to you. Since you don’t want us to drive you, let’s discuss this at home."

The two of them walked away, leaving me standing in the airport, my heart hollowed out like a cold wind sweeping through a valley. The anticipation and joy of a long-haul flight had turned into the biggest joke of my life. My wolf stirred within me, a low growl of pain and betrayal that echoed in the depths of my mind. But I silenced her. Now was not the time to show weakness. Not in front of them. Not in front of anyone.

The pestle felt heavy in my cramped, aching fingers. I brought it down hard against the dried yarrow root, grinding it into a fine powder. The Moonveil Pack’s Omega healing ward was little more than a dilapidated shack at the edge of the territory. It smelled constantly of cheap bleach, damp wood, and the bitter tang of medicinal herbs. But the smell I couldn't ignore today was the scent of my own fear. I stopped grinding and stared at the crumpled piece of paper resting on the edge of my scratched wooden counter. *Final Notice: Medical Termination and Eviction.* The words blurred as my eyes stung. My mother, Amy, was lying in the back room, her breathing shallow and rattling. The pack charged exorbitant fees for Omegas to receive even basic care, and I was out of time. If I didn't pay her medical debts by tomorrow morning, they would cut off her treatments and throw us out of the ward.

I stood at the edge of the grand hall, my fingers trembling around the ceremonial silver goblet. Five years of practice had taught me how to move through these events like a ghost—seen but not truly present. The annual inter-pack alliance ceremony was the most important diplomatic event of the year, and as Luna of the Shadowmoon Pack, my role was simple: smile, nod, and reflect well on my Alpha. My Alpha. The words tasted bitter in my mind. Marcus Sterling was never truly mine, nor I his. The mate mark on my neck burned with phantom pain, a constant reminder of our fraudulent bond. "Luna Elena," a voice called, pulling me from my thoughts. "The Blackthorn delegation awaits your greeting." I moved forward, the weight of my ceremonial gown dragging behind me like chains. The visiting Alphas and Lunas stood in a semicircle, their eyes calculating as they assessed me—the famously quiet, submissive Luna of the powerful Shadowmoon Pack.

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows through the human town's market square as I wandered between the stalls, breathing in the mingled scents of fresh bread and blooming flowers. Here, among humans who knew nothing of pack hierarchies or mate bonds, I could pretend to be just another woman selecting roses for her dining table. My fingers traced the velvet petals of a deep crimson rose, and for a moment, I allowed myself to imagine Ethan's face when he saw them on our table tonight. Three years together, and I still hoped for those rare moments when his cold facade would crack, revealing glimpses of the mate bond I believed lay dormant beneath. "Beautiful choice," the elderly vendor said, her weathered hands wrapping the stems in brown paper. "Someone special?" "My mate," I replied softly, the word still sending a flutter through my chest despite everything. The woman's knowing smile faltered as a chill swept through the warm evening air. The market sounds—haggling voices, children's laughter, the clink of coins—seemed to dim as four figures materialized from the crowd. Victoria Taylor stood at their center, her blonde hair catching the dying light like spun gold. Three Delta wolves flanked her, their presence turning the peaceful market into a hunting ground.

The familiar scent of pine and earth filled my lungs as I approached the territory I once called home. Six years. Six years of exile, of surviving in rogue lands with nothing but my wits and fierce determination to protect the precious life I carried. Now, as I walked up the stone path leading to the Moonstone Pack house, my daughter Presley's small hand clutched tightly in mine, every step felt like walking through a minefield of memories. The pack house stood exactly as I remembered—imposing gray stone walls covered in ivy, tall windows that once welcomed me with warm light, and the heavy oak door that had opened to me countless times as Luna. But now, everything felt different. Colder. Foreign. "Mama, is this really where you used to live?" Presley whispered, her wide eyes taking in the grandeur she'd only heard about in my carefully edited bedtime stories. Her voice carried that mix of wonder and wariness that had kept us alive in rogue territory.

The night before our marking ceremony, I stood frozen outside Samuel's office, my hand hovering inches from the doorknob. I'd come to surprise him with the ceremonial robes I'd spent weeks embroidering with our pack's symbols—a gesture I thought would make tomorrow perfect. But the words filtering through the door stopped me cold. "She's been so clingy lately," Samuel's voice dripped with irritation. "Always asking when we're going to mark, when we're going to announce our status. It's pathetic." I pressed my back against the wall, my heart hammering against my ribs. This couldn't be real. Samuel—my childhood protector, the man I'd given my wolf to save—was complaining about me to his Beta. "Tomorrow's just a formality," he continued, his voice lowering to that intimate tone I thought was reserved only for me. "Once I've officially claimed the Alpha position through her family's bloodline, I can finally be rid of her." My fingers dug into my palms until I felt warm wetness—blood.
